@cswaggschweigert The sheet metal is from a 1966 International Harvester 1300 A. It was a 1 & 1/4 ton truck. Built frame from scratch, 3x8x1/4 tubing. 502 FI Chevy. 25,000 lbs of axles. Eaton Fuller FS 7206A 6 speed which is SAE #2 (325 lbs) and transfer case is Fabco TC 38 (475 pounds).
@TheDeathCrawler Thanks! Front is Rockwell FDS75. 7500 lbs GAW. This is non military, 13.25" dia hypoid ring gear. Wide range of ratios available. 1.75" dia alxes. Can be found STOCK with huge disc brakes (15.25"). Rear is Spicer N175 (17,500lbs). 16" hypoid gear set. 5 gallons of gear lube!! 1.875" dia axles, 15.25" disc brakes. stock. Wide range of ratios. 10 studs, 3/4" dia at 11.25" bolt circle. Regards, Ron
Man, this is first class. You executed ideas i've always wondered about. Like running a 6 or 7 speed eaton but how do you mate one? What t- case could survive and if guys are running hot motors and breaking rockwells, what then?? And how Much does this thing weigh anyway, close to 9000 lbs? Love the hulk green. Really really coooool dude.
@red1950stude Thanks! Check out the build up videos. If you have a 4 bolt main Chevy and want to run an SAE #2 tranny check out CLOTHIERTRACTION on web. A custom adpater housing and flywheel used in conjuction with the stock flexplate & starter adapts to SAE #2 trannies with ease. Transfer case is FABCO. Check out FABCOAUTOMITIVE on web. They are a supplier of heavy drive train goodies for IH and GM. I can help you select rears and matching spicer u-joints, yokes, shafts etc.
@MrChrismakesbeats Thanks much. If you have any questions on the build up feel free to ask. I have several videos on my channel showing the build up process. If you or any of your friends needs heavy duty chains for their off road tires let me know.
@KapteinOpel I have never heard that before. I think a little slack is OK. Outright tight is bad and can stress break the chains. The key word being "little". With the big cleats on these types of tires the chains never get to actually "walk" rotationally relative to the tire. Been doing it 30 years and yet to see a tire issue from it so perhaps I have enough slack. Can you site a legitimate reference (industry tech letter etc) to support your comment? I would like to verify. Tnx
@1966ih Well, its a long time ago snow chains were in regular use, but I've seen it in old books and/or magazines, dont remember. But I remember clearly a picture of a tire with "kjettinggnag"(chain gnaw) If the chains are too tight they will dig into the tire over time. I remember my grandad said it when I got some snowchains for my first car. This rarely happen today because chains are mostly used for severe conditions only, and is never left on the tire for an extended period of time.
@KapteinOpel I love it. Chain Gnaw. I imagine that if chains are that tight and left on for years without ever being taken off dry rot might happen too between the chain and the tire as it goes through heating and cooling cycles when left outside for a few years, only seeing use in buck season etc. I tell people to never deflate to get the chains on and then inflate to snup them up. Thanks.
@1966ih Not if you care for your tires, but if you have a set of old ones it can be alot of fun.. Needless to say, tire chains that are stuck on the tire will really dig in to dirt, and hack ice.
Thanks, It has been a bummer this year in Northeastern PA for snow. All of the heavy stuff went South of us to Phili. I have my fingers crossed for more snow!
The axles are not from any particular truck model/year. Just like a Dana 60 might be used by Ford or GM on certain models in certain years. The front is a Rockwell FDS 75 and one application for it was F700/F800 4x4 trucks mid 80s to mid 90s. Rear is Spicer N175 with 16 inch ring gear. Adpater for the SAE #2 comes from CLOTHIERTRACTION on the web. Adpats any 4 bolt main Chevy to SAE #2. Eaton FUller FS7206A 6 speed manual weighs 325 pounds on its own. 14" SAE#2 clutch.
why the chains and are you running any kinda lockers, i am kinda partial to detroits as they take my suburban stupid places very reliably, very cool binder though!!
I run Detroits front and back. Chains are absolutely needed here in mid winter in NE USA. Lots of ice on our trails under the snow. Packs down real quick. Some kids with no experience will tell you "just air down". Rubber and Ice do not mix, especially on a hill with a compound angle of about 20 degrees in each axis!! And 2 link spaced chains kick ass over 4 link spaced chains. Check out CLOTHIERTRACTION on the web. Tnx for the nice comments!
You can dig up a "new-old" stock SAE #2 at many heavy truck junk yards. Go for the fully synchronized 6 or 7 speeds by Eaton Fuller or Spicer for about $3k/$4k. 1.75" dia input and 2" output shafts instead of the 1.375" junk run on 1/2 ton to 1 ton rigs. Get the adapter kit from CLOTHIERTRACTION on the web. Takes any 4 bolt main Chevy to SAE #2. Uses bone stock 14" dia SAE #2 clutch. Also uses stock flexplate to maintain balance. You will have to fab supports & driveshafts.
that thing is plain awesome. you have probably the biggest baddest truck thats still street legal. have you ever totaled up the whole cost to build it? like if i wanted to build a replica how much would it cost to buy everything you have done to it?
The single most expensive part is the crate motor. The Holley 4di system included I think I have @ $9K into the motor. A new Fabco transfer case is about $7K, new SAE #2 tranny is between $4 and $7K. Used 10 stud pumpkins abut $1500 each and another $1500 each to rebuild. Custom fuel cell @$2k. Tires @2.4K, custom rims @$1k, two winches @$1k each, driveshafts @$2k, frame from scratch, @$1k, sheet metal and camper top @ $6k. Whats that add up to? Ha ha!
Yes, right on Pierce hill. By the way, I accidentally removed the other comment you dropped in. Sorry about that. If you want to wheel where I run about 55 miles SSW of here you will need chains on all 4 this time of year. Let me know if you want to go play.
BEAST! fuckin high preasure hoses threw out, looks like an aluminum rad too, big ass air filter, fuckin hell dude, how much BHP is that thing putting out?
The tranny, without any mounting hardware, weighs 325 pounds. It has 1.75" dia input shaft and 2.0 inch dia output shaft. Low gear is 9 to 1. Full synchro in all 6 speeds. It is an Eaton Fuller FS7206A.
Yes, I have looked at the Portals. Believe it or not they are a notch weaker than the specific FDS 75 I am using which is a HYPOID ring and pinion - NON MILITARY style.
Have you ever considered using Unimog portals instead Rockwells? The only drawback is the 7.14 gear ratio but a descent overdrive would solve that issue.
Ever thought about adding a bolt-on compressor? Then you could let the air out some and get better traction when you needed it, and fill it right back up without too much hassle.
Plus the convenience of having air everywhere you go! =D
You are correct. I have TWO on board electric compressors. But, 49s always take time to play with due to how big they are so I tend to not air them down unless conditions are extreme.
i've wanted a 1966 b1600 ( i think thats the one ). witch one is that a b1600 or something else . but i can tell you this i would love to have that thing . and i wouldn't change a thing on it . but mabe the chains . dont need then down here where i live . but nice truck i lvoe it .
I have never weighed it. I suspect it's curb weight is at least 8,000 lbs and I bet 10,000 lbs is not a crazy # to believe. I know this much, I want another 200 HP!!
IThanks for the vote of confidence, but I assure you, running up 20 degree hills in snow like that in the Northeast, especially where you start from a dead stop, does not happen without the chains. Trust me, I have tried. Also, running a 20 degree sidehill in that much snow for an extended distance without chains is uncontrollable. You slide sideways as you go across the hill. If you compress the trail and turn it to ice undernerath from multiple passes you are DONE without chains...
This specific video was shot in back of my house in Vestal, NY. I have made some serious spring upgrades since then and am eagerly awaiting SNOW so I can shoot more video.
Just airing down to below 10psi will give much more flotation/traction in backcountry deep snow, if you find yourself in the deep. Rock on. Nice truck
hey man. you have the coolest truck ive ever seen. every part is so meticulously thought out and your fabrication abilities seem limitless. i wish i had the knowhow that you do. building a machine like yours has been a life long dream of mine and i just dont know where to start. i mean that truck is really bad ass. you are lucky. that thing must be a lot of fun to take on trails. im envious. lol. do you have any high resolution pics so that i can show it to my friends? kudos. I'm jealous of the rockwell! I've been trying to find a set for decent price, the chev is a throw together right now. Time and money is the big retraint for me right now. keep on with the videos!

snow chains are supposed to have a little slack, so they wander on the wheel or else you'll ruin your tires.
