They are both exceptional bass players. You can't compare the two though, as they both have different styles and genres, pick/finger and punk/funk. Comparing them is like comparing B.B.King (blues/finger picking) to Pat Smear from Foo Fighters (rock/pick). Both are completely different genres and styles and cannon be compared.

It's tough, but in pure ability unfortunately (cause I'm more a rancid fan than a RHCP fan) I give it to Flea, he is a better bassist, but if we are talking about the MVP bassist than it is hands down Matt Freeman. Rancid, while they make GREAT music, are not in a genre usually known for musical technical skills, and he brings Rancid into another class with his play, while the mainstream rock genre is full of technically great musicians so Flea doesn't really bring RHCP into a different class

@killjoy0987 Well once you master the come-back with your thumb, slapping isn't that much harder on your hand as much as picking that fast. Plus, Flea is just sticking to a few areas and the movements are really easy. Matt Freeman is rocking the entire fretboard. I'd say its just as hard on their picking, fingering, slapping hand for both of them, but Matt Freeman is doing so much more work on the fretboard. I want everyone to have an opinion tho hahha

@gustavooww18 You didn't even get what I meant by that. He's a great slapper, but he's really not as good as people think he is, search Gustavo Dal Farra or Eric Czar's slapping. Flea for the most part just stays in one place the whole time, and its all about just getting good on your right hand. I know he moves around a bit with some octaves even, but that's just not as good as Matt Freeman rocking the whole board. Its kind of ironic though, I do like RHCP better than Rancid.

i have to disagree slapping and popping is easy depending on how apply it but when i really listen to some of flea's shit i can hear this oasis of technique in his bass lines, this crazy shit that most wouldn't even be able to keep up with also he's one of the few bass players who utilizes all four fingers when he plucks
