i got this tape at about the same time i got my drivers permit. i remember playing it every time my mom took me to practice driving. i would kill to go back to that time period. sigh.
Haha! @ 1:20 she does this cute head shake because she's had a bit of front monitor problem in hearing the vocals and the build up to that great chorus is here. She just crushes it!!! Awesome! If I didn't know The Sundays and saw this, it would make me buy everything. Rare that you get someone that can sound dead on every time live as they do in the studio. More impressive when factoring a shitty mix.
Harriet Wheeler, Billie Holiday and Karen Carpenter all have this mesmerizing quality to their voice that makes me stop what I'm doing and just sit there listening in absolute rapture.
@comebackharriet yeah, I was in Home depot - I'm brit away from home - and I couldn't believe I heard "Finest Hour on the PA". I hung around the indoor plants just so I could hear the beautiful end of the song - its finest hour!
@audrey9864 That's how good Harriet is. Like Bjork, she's got the vocal power that few people have. She's a pure, natural signer, and I could listen to that voice all night.
@audrey9864 It's live. I've heard this song a million times, she's just a great performer. There are videos on here where they layered in the track from the album, but this is legit.
@audrey9864 Yea, you can hear little changes that are definitely live...but damned if it ain't close, I can see how you'd doubt it. Sinead O'Connor is the same way - she's almost too good live to believe it.
@audrey9864 Everything sounds believable to me until the end, which is the hardest part to sing pitch-wise. At 4:04 it sounds like they're triggering a second vocal track or someone else is singing with her but I've come to find out they use a delay on her voice there. I guess Wheeler is just an amazing singer.
NEVER NEVER do I tire of listeing to The Sundays. There are magical at every listen. It will be a great joy if we ever get another release from Harriet and the gang.
I was walking through Home Depot on Sunday, and heard 'Finest Hour' over the PA. I was shocked! And about 10 seconds into the song, someone turned up the volume. :)

OMFG that is where I first heard the song! A week ago I was walking through home depot when I heard this and I fell madly in love. I was trying to listen to the lyrics so I could find the song online but the song ended and I was seriously depressed for the next week! Then when I was walking in Home depot again, they were playing it again! I finally was able to hear a verse and that's how I found the song! I bet Home depot has a soundtrack they play everday
I dunno myself, steele - I never did see them myself; she does seem a little intense in this performance, but her pitch and enunciation are absolutely perfect, and she stays true to the original recording; a little improvisation is fine sometimes but I do think some artists get a little carried away with their voices when they do live shows; this is a fine performance, I think - she has a marvelous voice and I do miss her.
im one of their biggest fans, saw them twice, etc, but i dunno.....and this might explain why they just went away to raise a family have no one has heard a peep since.......but it does not look like she is having fun up there.....seems like a chore to her.
steele66, I'd also say Harriet seemed a bit worn out from the S&S tour. I think this London concert was their last one after coming back from the U.S. You have to remember Harriet was bringing along her daughter on the tour too. That probably made it difficult to unwind and have a few beers on the tour bus. ;) She seemed much more carefree and relaxed on the Blind tour.
Oh my.

Please come back. Your disappearance is so symbolical of the good music that came from the 90's. I love you Harriet.
