  • Is this a coincidence? I was just finished reading Oryx and Crake. The main character mentions Alex a couple of time.

    great book.

    RIP Alex

  • @Lite619 CORKNUT <3! :')

  • RIP sweet Alex...

  • Its so sad... RIP little man xx

  • i love my african grey and i bought it after watching alex

  • alex we will miss u :(

  • Ugh. I cried like a baby. Im reading the amazing book atm and I love my own parrot (vos eclectus) so much it hurts. Parrots are definately better people than most of us <3

  • alex why do good people die early whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • i'm so sorry to hear about Alex I just read I got my grey in 1997 right from the egg.. I read where they can live to be 60 years old what happened to Alex did he get sick

  • @foxymoonbay100 they think he died of a heart attack caused by blocked arteires they are not 100% sure but he did not die in pain he died peacefully

  • i dont know alex and i am sad

  • You be good Alex, see you tomorrow :[

  • Whyy? :( whyy? :( why could instead die some killer or murderer but nice parrot who didnt done any evil to anyone... :(

  • boy it relly hits you hard cause im still crying

  • So sad he still had a long time to live, but he taught us alot about the brain of a bird. We will miss you Alex

  • this video makes me cry, why did alex have to die? 

  • im not sill recoverd my loss...i had african grey...i lost him last summer..he only cursed and make a whole lot crap around...god how i miss him.

    alex was a legend.

i wich yhere is a heaven

  • in school i wud never cry ... it cud be any reason i wudnt cry ... bu after i saw this i just started crying because i have a bird called kevin and i love him lots i never want him to die and i keep of thinking of kevin ... im so happy he is still with me

  • Thanks Alex. You are the reason I know the joy of living with an African Grey. Nine years and counting now. I love dogs & cats and pretty much all animals but the way my bird and I interact is a whole different kind of experience. I emailed Dr. Pepperberg and told her this in more detail. Thank you Irene and God bless.

  • what was the reason that alex dies?

  • @vtowndegekste He was really old

  • He was 31 yrs old when he died...

  • Thank you Alex, all your hard work will help future generations understand we are neither smarter nor more important than other species.

  • :-(

  • awww rip alex,i dident know you but from your videos i can see you was a good bird.

  • made me cry ;-; Alex forever

  • Tammy, this video STILL brings tears to my eyes. FYI, after, "Alex and Me," came out, I began writing the tele-play as planned, and am almost finished. I'll be sending a copy to Arlene, Irene and you, if you want one.

    Chris (Formerly, "coffinman50")

  • ok so i cried... but he was one amazing parrot. im very sorry he passed away. :(

  • R.I.P. Alex greetz from parrot Rambo and me......

  • he was the brave parrot i ever see my life . When i heard he died i start crieng so much i cant stop. even my parrot is not like this. rip and rest in piece alex.

  • screw the 5 people who posted a thumbs down, have some respect.

  • Thank you for this....!!

  • I can't stop crying!!!

  • They say that Alex wasn't unique - that all other greys are just like that.

Now, I want you to think about this: Imagine if Alexs wound up in the wrong hands, as do many parrots. Imagining him cowering from a cruel owner. Someone slapping him. It is horrible: Yet this is the fate that many African Greys are destined to. We know they are capable of suffering, and they do.

...DAMN THE CRUELTY! DAMN ITS MINIONS! These creatures need the respect they deserve.

  • @Scitech101 Pigs are smarted than dog. Do you eat them?

  • R.I.P king of Parrot ...I Salute you Alex in the name of United stars of the smartest bird in the world....lol

  • WHERE IS THE INFO ABOUT THE AUTOPSY....31yrs.....THAT IS MUCH SOO PREMATURE FOR A "HEALTHY PARROT"s DEATH.

They mentioned he was 'found dead' okay, so IF HE WAS SUCH A BIG DEAL IN THE LAB, SCIENCE, ANIMAL BEHAVIOR, etc. WHAT KILLED HIM? WHERE IS THE NECROPSY REPORT?

  • @Helenem55 hardening of the arteries , killed him

  • I...I... IM NOT GON...GONNA CRY!

  • @haga537 i just got done crying

  • @haga537 i cant stop crying eather

  • I agree that parrots are highly intelligent. My Quaker can do a lot of the things Alex did, but I think that Alex was not treated the way a parrot deserves! Often in his videos he is begging to go back or to eat and is told "no". It is ridiculous to force a toddler to 8 hours a day of learning, so why do it to an animal who is comparable to a child? Alex didn't even have toys in his regular cage and was left alone when not being trained. I think it's sad he had to live that way.

  • beautiful tribute very touching and will all miss you rest in peace

  • RIP alex

    we see u in heaven

  • i never seen a bird as smart as alex. i even work at a parrot rescue and none of them were as smart as Alex. rip alex

  • i thing you was love very much this parrot i hope him hi stil living

    ]

  • my coment?i didnt read this book but i will read it.i have a parrot at home and i know that he is very intelligent and all animals are intelligent . people can help them to be like alex.what Dr. Pepperberg did it is amazing.she gave this parrot her life and so did alex.they were an excelent team and they showed us that each animal can be smart, you just need to work with them, understand that they have their fellings and sense, treat them like you want to be treated, RIP little, but BIG ALEX

  • @iwy2223 would you ignore your parrot's cries to "go back" or "eat dinner" when in the middle of teaching him or showing him off to cameras? I certainly wouldn't. And I don't think anyone SHOULD. If you did that sort of thing to a child it would be deemed neglect. Parrots are like perpetual kids who want to play and be loved...not treated like a science experiment. Watch some of the video of him and notice how he begs to stop and is ignored. It brings tears to my eyes every time i see it.

  • R.I.P. Alex world's smartest parrot RIP buddy i like cried through the vid RIP MAN LOVE YA!

  • R.I.P ALEX

    world smartest parrot.

  • I cried all the way through this. And I really want the book "Alex and me".Rest in peace, you beautiful bird.

  • I just finished reading the book 'Alex and Me'......... when oh when oh when are we going to give animals like Alex the credit and respect they deserve and realize just how intelligent they are? I can't believe people shoot these creatures. I will never be at peace in my life until us dumb humans come to know just how smart and beautiful they really are. Rip Alex!

  • Your statement articulates my own sentiments. Unfortunately, we can't even treat our fellow human beings with kindness so I don't think feathered and furry creatures will ever get the respect and credit they deserve. People as a group are really messed up. We operate by the rule of: What you can kill, kill. What you can take, take.

  • oh my god! That was so beautiful!

  • @AsumiShiroNiwa it sure sure was sorry i was just crying

  • Rest in peas, Alex

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains

You raise me up to walk on stormy seas

I know you can read this, because God let all parrots watch youtube in Parrot Heaven, especially you, his son. You died for us. Does anyone think it is a coincidence that your name is an anagram for Jesus. I think not, You where the Second coming, and only a few of us knew. Alex, we were partners and lovers, I miss your wit, your droppings, your profound wisdom and horny eyes.

    Respect

  • Ok, I must admit, your comment made me laugh... because it is funny and goofy. But seriously... have you read the book "Alex and Me?" I highly recommend it. It'll really make you think differently about parrots/birds/animals.

  • by alex soo sad u have gone b a good boy xxx

  • I read "Alex and Me" a few months ago. Unless the story of this parrot is an elaborate hoax of some sort, it redefines once and for all, on a scientific level, what it means to be human and non-human.

  • i have an idea:D. U could buy another parrot and train it like u traind alex. And u could name it alex #2!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i didnt even know this bird and i cried i got here from watching smart animals this song probly made me cry though

  • it's just a normal humannity that speaks in you. I was touched too.

  • Hey Alex i am buying an african gray today and naming him after you :)

  • What's named this song?????

  • SONG: You Raised Me Up by Celtic Woman

  • I love this bird! I cryed when a see this film! ;( I don't onderstand why you dayed...WE LOVE YOU ALEX [*]

  • It is good to cry for someone you loved. They are cleansing tears and help you face the future and still be able to love again. Alex was a remarkable personality and taught us how much more animals are than most humans understand.

    Thank you Alex.

  • Well said. I still cry when watching this though. Alex would've loved this , I think.

  • Thank you. One always cries a little for someone who was loved. The intensity lessens a tiny bit over time but never goes away altogether. It is always a little bittersweet to remember, but better to remember than not at all. I want people to feel such strong connection to other animals. It would help humanity to improve.

  • "I want people to feel such strong connection to other animals. It would help humanity to improve. " - Robinwhiteart, I totally agree with this comment.

  • Thank you. I became aware of the connection between how we treat other animals and how we humans improve, some time ago. Most people, even some animal-lovers, do not get this point. "We are them and they are us"--is one way to put it. Also they are so much smarter than most people believe--all of them. Even ask the Scientists who study various animal populations. In their non-scientific mode, most will admit to sensing the depth of the animals they study analytically. I find that hopeful.

  • Celtic Women is a very inspiring group of singers... the song fits well with any bird lover. They take your heart the way a child does. RIP Alex

  • cried... good parrot (I love you)

     ;(

  • okay, did you have to put this song with this video? too tuchy for me, even though I don't have any specific memories with the song it fuels the need for crying.

  • made me cry. Absolutly beautiful tribute. Rest in peace Alex!

  • Beautiful song and tribute

  • i cried

  • you're not the only one

  • my three birds died and now they are playing with alex god bless you guys rest in peace alex

  • Очень понравилось!!!

  • you will me missed alex. rip.

  • Just finished reading "Alex & Me" and was amazed at this bird's intelligence and abilities. Humans are too smug, we are NOT the only intelligent beings on this planet.

  • RIP Alex.

  • Im so sad that alex passd away I will miss him.hi was a good parrot. we well all miss you.

  • i just find it hard to belive he is gone for 30 whole years alex never ceased to amaze people with his caperbilaty of understanding humans and he never backed down from challenges he always tried to complete the given task i just cant belive we thought thst these wonderfull creatures were only capable of mimicking well i guess we were wrong alex really has proved things incredible things that today will always be remenberd even after his passing alex r.i.p i am sad to hear of your passing

  • He was a good parrot. R.I.P Alex.

  • this video made me cry. i reminded me of all the pets i had over the years and how great they were. RIP alex and all the other loved ones we know

  • i myself have finshed the book alex and me i couldent help myself i just had to cry and in the process got a teir on the page it is just so sad the book is the best i have ever read i loved it so much that i am reading it again goodbye alex i miss you

  • Goodbye Alex, you will always be missed.

  • Just read Alex and Me, a very good book about Alex and Dr. Pepperberg. This was an amazing bird that was full of personality and wit. I first heard about Alex after his passage in 2007. The academic life is fraught with funding struggles.

  • There are alot worse experiments going on out there with animals than this. He was loved and cared for and his life was full of socialization. Look at all the animals getting experimented on without so much as a kind word.

  • he was a sad bird.. look how his feders look like..

doing all this experiments with him made him sick&sad and he died...

just stop doing that shit experiments with those birds.. they are smart, we know it. what else?

poor bird, i hope u are happy now , where ever u are... in heaven with some friends :-)

  • Alex was truley an amazing creature and its a shame hes gone this video really touched me at the end where it said your work is done and then his last words you be good... see you tommorow... i love you they are the words that brought tears to my eyes good video Dizkat. R.I.P Alex

  • R.I.P ALEx.....I watched you throughout the years....I never missed any of your appearances on televisionand you still amaze me even though you are no longer here with us.

  • i have just lost mine to, ozzie you was much loved and will be missed, you can now spend time with alex. god bless you both xx

  • Wasn't he beautiful. Poor Irene; that had to be devastating for her. Very nice video.

  • We all are devastated. While only Irene can know the true sadness, we can try. I hope that Alex is residing in parrot heavan, finally recieving all the corn, trips to the gym, nuts, and banerries, right as soon as he asks for it.

And to his successor, Griffon, while I know that you cannot understand this, I pray that you can undertake the great legacy of Alex....the legend.

  • i use to have an africain grey parrot, we named her cleo, she made sounds od bad words, and every morning she would wake us up by imitating the telephone, she was started to have to much stress, so she started plucking feaths out of her neck and stuff, we got rid of her, but she licked my most of the family, but....watching this vod reminded me of those annoying but good times :'(

  • This made me cry. Goodbye, Alex. I wish I had had the privilege of knowing you.

  • I'm so sorry for the loss of this beautiful smart bird Alex I cried when i watched this movie it's such a sweet tribute i still think of Alex everyday

  • I, too, think of this little bird, this beautiful creature made by the hand of God, everyday.

  • Reading "Alex & Me" - got it for x-mas. It is very good. Thanks .

  • Honey know the pain of losing a loved one . Thay our our angels in heaven . God Bless you . I know the pain ...Thay are all a blessing from God . And Yes need our interations/pirch and play Daily .

  • He seemed like a really sweet bird. And so smart!

  • omg he really touches my heart...

  • alex is in birdheaven now lets hope hes enjoying it

  • This video just bring the tears and keeps them flowing. I love how you put the last part in, his last words.

  • I believe I can fly ! Alex you have a place in our hearts . Think of him everyday! We rescued a Timney Grey .here with Bob(scarlot) and Miles (Redfront Macaw . Alex will allways be a part of our flocks heart!God Bless!

  • This is in my Favorites and when I come back to visit, it still evokes all the love I still feel for Alex. Dear Alex, you will forever be loved.

  • I keep coming back to this tribute, and continue to well-up after watching it. Tammy, you did a great job with this and it's even more poignant after reading "Alex and Me." He's forever in our hearts.

  • Thank you and God Bless Alex and all those who worked with him. My African Grey, Pepper, shows me daily how profoundly intelligent and sensitive these birds are and how lucky we are to inhabit this planet alongside them. Alex will always live on as time is not linear as our limited minds see, but all moments exist as one. That is probably how the higher Power sees the universe, so Alex, you are free and loved!

  • Alex-

On the eve of the one year anniversary of your departure, I have rescued a Congo African Grey who was wild caught, and lived as a breeder until his mate passed away a few weeks ago. In your honor and memory, I've named him Alex, and will devote all the time needed for him to become socialized, and to make up for the cruel people who took him from the wild only to spend his first years in a cage.

Alex, this endeavor is dedicated to your life and memory. Your spirit lives on.

    Chris

  • @coffinman50 im glad there are people like you in this world. Thank You.

  • Bye bye Alex.. He was

    a wonderful bird and altho

arlene said he was only a college

im sure that he was a close companion to

    her =].. R.I.P buddy

  • I have a Grey of my own. You cannot be around a bird like this and not be close. They are smart, also attentive and loving. You don't "own" a parrott, you have a friend.

  • Fly FREE Alex!

  • It's been nearly a year, and I still can't believe Alex is gone. The video has me in tears: don't know what I'll do if one of my parrots passes before me. They're not my pets, they're my companions. My heart still out to Alex's family. But he taught the world something those of us that are owned by a parrot already know - they do have souls.

  • alex was a smart bird

  • We will always remember you Alex!

  • Couldn't stop my tears. RIP, son!

  • A lovely tribute. We continue to miss you and you remain in our hearts forever. Rest well.

  • i'v only seen alex once on tv, and fell in love with this creation of God. may Allah grant him janat...

    mh

  • To Everyone that has posted here and to Anyone that will post. I really want to keep this video and page positive, a true tribute to Alex and Irene.

    Thanks for Reading

    Tammy

  • RIP little guy :(

  • How VERY sad. I HOPE he was a happy bird and given as much love and playtime as he was instruction time. What a precious bird. If birds & animals go to heaven, I hope God has him in a very special place and has been rewarded for all that he has done. God Bless you Alex!

  • Well done. A lovely tribute to Alex and the work of Dr. Pepperberg.

  • Just be wary of some of the groups that profess to honor his memory. Choose wisely.

  • Such a terribly sad loss for Dr. Pepperberg's research. Alex was an amazing insight into the cognitive abilities of animals and completely revolutionized the world of behavioral research. He will be missed deeply.

  • alex was a huge insperation to me and it broke my heart to hear of his passing away and even though he's not hear in life he will always be in my heart and the hearts of all the people who loved him. i know how strong the bond between a parrot and a human is and its something that never goes away even long after one has passed away. r.i.p alex and thankyou for the wonderful memories. see you soon little guy

  • To Tammy and Arlene- Thank you both so much for the information. I promise to do my best to make the memory of Alex live on for those of us who loved and miss him so badly. His light will truly shine on.

    Chris

  • Alex We Missssssss You!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful! Thanks for making this.

  • alex is an inspiration to all african greys and what they can achieve with good training and lots of love. i miss you buddy.

  • May God bless you alex.

  • A shame. I liked him better than most people.

  • "See you tomorrow...I love you." I've watched vids hearing him say that... made me cry all over again.

  • Though your pet dieing is an awful experience, it's just as bad when a pet owner dies leaving a pet with no one to care for it. I often wonder what will happen to my spoiled pet pigeons, who will probably out live me, after I'm gone. God Bless Alex.

  • bless that poor little harmless parrot!

i was crying right through the whole thing!

i have a african grey they live up to about 30 years so i will be crying for ages when mine passes away! sorry for the tragic loss

    ( sad face)

  • Needless to say, it is impossible for me to imagine the depth of Dr Pepperberg's tragic loss! As a big man, I prefer to hide my inner feelings, but I can't hide what's running down my cheeks! Fly free Alex,"RIP" my world class friend, because with your magnificent graywings, you have a headstart on the rest of the Angels!! Christy, Jenny, and Chuck

  • Oh, how terrible I feel for all who were close to Alex. He was a very special bird. No one can ever take his place.

I am so thankful for these special angels in our lives that God cloaked with feathers....

  • nice vid..

  • A Beautiful Tribute be good... see you tomorrow... i love you...

thanks tammy goodbye alex my friend

  • Beautiful. We love you Alex. Forever in our hearts. The world is crying over you.

  • I cried when I watched this. I lost an incredible African Grey parrot, too; and it was as heart-wrenching as the loss of a human companion.

What a haunting tribute to Alex.

  • I love Alex and I know the testing was important but it seems he never got to just be a bird.

  • what a beautiful song for such a beautiful bird!! R.I.P Alex xxxxx

  • great great video song good also thanks for posting dizkat

  • What a wonderful tribute. The ending words of Your Work is done got to me the most. I was ok until then. Tears are falling again..

    Amy

  • A beautiful tribute. I was alright until I got to, "Your work is done." Alex's last words to "his Mom" have made me realize how precious every day is with my birds. The tears are flowing again.

  • What a tearjerker! My dog is on my lap worrying over me; he thinks something's wrong. Beautiful video Tammy!

    Cindi Eppers

  • Just AWESOME... that song always makes me cry anyway!!!

    Thanks for sharing

  • That was very nicely done. His personality came right through the pictures. I made it through to Alex's last words and that was my undoing.

  • Tammy, thank you for your beautiful tribute to Alex and Dr. Pepperberg. The tears are flowing again. Thank you for putting your heart into this tribute. There is so much love for Alex.

  • Tammy, an Awesome Tribute so, tastefully done. The love you have for Dr. Pepperberg and her "Beloved Alex" was clearly felt by me.

Brought me to my knees and cry i did, from the beginning to the end. Tears for you, Dr. Pepperberg and Alex. The world is better because of people like you.Dr. Pepperberg is truly a Gift to our world..Alex? I have no words that will express my feelings for him.

  • Thank you so very much for this touching tribute to a very special AG and Dr. Pepperberg. It's so very hard to accept that Alex is gone!

    Sylvie H.

  • Tammy, you did a genuinely beautiful tribute for a profoundly sad event. It feels like we have all lost a beloved family member. Thank you for this very moving tribute.

    sukey

  • Tammy, Thank you for doing this for tribute to Alex and all his fans. I am crying again, I miss him so much. Arlene (his other mom)

  • The heartfelt love and appreciation for Alex and Irene is clearly felt. What a labor of love. Both of us staying up all night, each to work on our own Alex projets.

I made it all the way through... till the page that said his work was done... now I can hardly see through the tears... well done Tammy. Well done. bonnie

  • That was beautiful. Thank you for making it and sharing it with us. I have company over and should have known better, but watched it anyway and now here I am in tears!
