I haven't looked at this in a long time but zero123456789ten is incorrect when he/she says "Please do *not* TWIST". The way I have described the process is exactly how the GCSAA recommends.

Please do *not* TWIST. That tears the root system.
Do what he says, but just push in the direction where you're trying to move the grass.
Actually, most ball marks can be mostly fixed by pushing with your thumb (to push a picture in your mind of what you are trying to do).
