I don't think I've seen a single guitarist play with their thumb directly behind the fretboard... they play them with the thumb slightly high up. But otherwise great lesson again :D
@adstr123 no offence bro see joe satriani....................if u havent try this then do try it it is really effective it will help in long stretches hammer on nd pull ofs..................nd u will play faster nd smoother cause by playing this way fingers travel a lesser distance.........
no offence bobby i have learnt off of you but your technique about were your thumb shouod be. i actually looked around and kirk hammet doesnt even do that so is that really Write?
The first guy who ever gave the first lesson who passed it down to the next guy.? I don't know?? who invented the right way to play drums?? . It doesn't mean you have to play that way.Why don't you ask dude, It's his page.I.use my thumb but now I try not to when I think about it..I feel it gives me better force on the neck for bare chords.
@bajspackare93 I know tons of guys that use the back machine in the gym and lean way back when they do it [Sitting Rows] ]BUT It IS NOT PROPER TECHNIQUE! Use the info or don't!
@bajspackare93 Why?? The guy is just showing you the right way to play!! Use it or don't . I am 54 been playing since I was 20 I made records in the 80's and 90's and now own a music store. Just play your guitar and shut up!
Most of pop/rock artists don't use proper instrumental/singing techniques and most of them are unab to read a music score... what is showed here is the perfect fingernig (as learned when you have a classical music formation) which allows you to do everything you want with maximum fluidity. Then, that doesn't mean that it's the only way to play...
C'mon guys, he said even HE is guilty of this. We all are. It's easy to let that thumb ride up high, but it is NOT proper technique. If you struggle through keeping your thumb centered and "re-learn" your finger movements you will find much cleaner playing the result.
Laugh or not this helped me very much. that thumb thing is something i never learned and i had a problem with my fingers. they would turn. now that my thumb is there its sooo smooth. thank you honestly... ;)
aha yeah, i suppose that i needed a bit of a lesson on all this, although its simple i guess you get a bit lazy with the simply stuff. good vid fella/
Can't help but notice the Leafs jersey. What's the difference between a triangle and the Maple Leafs ? A triangle has 3 points. What do you call 20 millionaires sitting around watching the Stanely cup playoffs on TV ? The Toronto Maple Leafs. Why doesn't Hamilton have an NHL hockey team ? Because then Toronto will want one. What do the Blue Jays, Argonauts and Leafs all have in common, other than being from Toronto ? None of them play hockey. Ok, nuff razzin, thanks for the tips Go Canucks :o)
there is such a thing as proper technique but comfort is a big part of playing bobby you do a wanderful job at teaching proper technique. know your technique and as a guitarist/bassist you can modify it to fit your comfort. great job =D
im a guitarist that switched to bass, and i use the same techniques but like the man said below some guitarst do tilt their hand, its not proper but for most its a comfort thing, yes mr. crispy i know you ahve been playing for years and that you are way better then most of the peolple i have heard but when it comes down to it its about comfort and what feels right, but you do need to know your proper tequnes if you ever want to make it right. hay thanks for the vid. goodto be refreshed.
yea you are kind of wrong about this being "proper" Paul Gilbert and Marty Friedman have their thumb on the top and play some of the most technical stuff out there. Also by having your thumb in the middle, your vibratos will be lacking and you won't have much emotion in your playing. I've been playing for 3 years and I switch off between my thumb on top and and middle. I use your technique only when I am doing stretches.
i put my thumb over the neck when im playing avenged sevenfold solos. probably because thats wat synyster gates does.

sorry to mention but at the begining you thumb was up lol
sylvain265 1 year ago
you weaken your fulcrum when you fix the thumb. the back of the neck is curved for a reason. you should be able to pivot off the neck.

You can see even expert guitar players playing the "wrong" way, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, so many others
hillbillygenius72 2 years ago 3
Come on! Zakk wylde takes his fingers off the fretboard quite high, and its almost impossible to play standing up if your finger is at the middle =(
P.S. Your "Guitar Lesson: Easy Led Zeppelin Solo For Beginners" picture shows your thumb above the neck :0
