The second part is just one take, no cutaways, and she nails it. Her fragile, childish voice singing this slow, double entendre version of an upbeat tune was eerie, perfect. I've remembered it all these years. Someone else commented on how different this looks on the giant screens it was designed for. They just put the camera on her, she looks straight at you, and tells you without a trace of guilt about this wet dream she continually has, the words not disguising what she means.
@CRICKET999999999: You literally read my mind, she really was so precious and childlike. I just want to hold her in my lap and cuddle her! (And if anyone else reading this thinks that's weird, they can buzz off! Lol)
The Museum of Modern Art in New York mounted a lavish retrospective of Janet Gaynor's movies around 5 or 6 years ago that had to be seen to be believed. She made so many great ones. The 3 she won the first Oscar for, Sunrise, 7th Heaven, and Street Angel, remain unspeakably stunning on a big screen. Then the Museum of the Moving Image across town did a Frank Borzage retrospective immediately afterward so we saw some of her best films again. She was 23 when this clip was filmed.
We had so many talented and lovely girls back then. She was one of the best. I love this version .......and I looked at others. Thanks so much for posting it!!
I really love this video, she's so precious it makes me, i don't want to say sad, but i'm not sure what the feeling is. i tear up a little but i'm happy. anyway though, i really want to know what the instrument she's playing is. can anyone tell me please
@CRICKET999999999 I couldn't agree more, certainly couldn't put it any better: I just remembered watching the movie a few years ago and came looking for the clip here. The instrument's a zither :)
What a sweet and lovely lady! Her sweet voice is so simple yet full of sugar and spice! I wish a had a "time machine" and went back to that unique time and place and found her and held her in my arms! Those beautiful melodies of that period with its wonderful violin strings and sounds were so precious!
If you have never seen her movie with Henry Fonda - The Farmer Takes A Wife ( 1935), then you are missing a true classic. Janet is superb in her portrayal of an Erie canal woman. This is Henry Fonda's first movie and sets the stage for how he would play many of his roles. Janet is in my top 10 actresses of all time.
Oh wow...bravo Janet Gaynor! How cute was that? She's such a doll, and quite a wonderful actress too. I simply adore "Sunrise"(the song of two humans)!
I wish that Annette Hanshaw could have done this song in this film. Not to be. Annette sings this on record only. Janet does a splendid job on this song as it is...
Lovely Janet Gaynor, she was a little and beautiful voice, she was perfect a prefect actress in a silent and in a talk movies, she is a great pearl in a cinema history!!!
Love this song.

Charming clip. A time when a woman onscreen would actually act like one.

Gaynor and Farrell, Two silent stars with reedy unlikeable voices. That they survived the switch to talkies is amazing.

Aren’t we all in search of happiness?
To each one it means a different thing.
To some it’s well. To some it’s hell. To some it’s only what love can bring.
Please don’t blame me if I’m human, too.
I’m the same as you, and you, and you.
I’m a dreamer, aren’t we all?
Just a dreamer…
Aren’t we all?

1929 B.G. De Sylva, Ray Henderson, introduced by Janet Gaynor in this film, Sunny Side Up, also popularized by Paul Whiteman.

Obviously she's no great singer but her sincerity is ideal for this song.

Wonderful! - 5 Stars I think she got the first Academy Award for "Seventh Heaven" - a silent. ...
HarborGuy 3 years ago
According to Wikipedia, she is the only actor to win the Oscar for her work in 3 films in one season: Seventh Heaven, Street Angel, and Sunrise.
