I liked the paintbrush idea for kids but a piping bag is much easier and they look nicer. i think she should have mentioned how to get red. First you tint with a hot pink color, mix and then add no taste red coloring and keep adding no taste red till red
She should have mentioned that it's important to sift the powdered sugar before measuring it out. And also it's best to use warm water. That way you won't end up with stubborn white lumps and clumps of powdered sugar in the icing.
It's a lot easier and the cookies would turn out smoother if you have this "honey" icing BUT also a bit thicker icing as well.
What you do is put the thick icing into a pipping bag, with just a tiny hole in the end, outline the cookies with this. Let it set.
Next take the thin honey-like icing a spoon on a small amount and spreed it carefully to the outlined icing. It would stick to it and once dried, it would "look like the magazines you see in the stores". Any questions about this, email me

i use powdered sugar, egg whites, 1/4 teaspoon almond extract, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.. yummy!
