  • Well said.

  • There is so much decently well known good music around these days, from Radiohead to John Frusciante's solo records, from Sigur Ros to Archive or Tool and many others. And billions of great underground records from punk to trip hop. Stay away from the charts and its fine.

  • I've done the whole noise show in someone's apartment kind of thing. Total freedom! Of course Henry gets it. That's why he let me sample one of his word pieces on a noise track I did! ^_^

  • Rollins is the only person that can be mad at everything. I think he even hates air and think its sold out, homogenized, and lost its soul. I respect his opinions but he gotta take a chill pill every interview he does is exactly like this one.

  • I am not dissing punk, just stating fact. Country (as much as I dislike it) has a bigger audience (by far) than punk, rock, or metal.

  • @DrummerInfinite Yea so does Electronica and Hip-Hop but who cares? That's all pussy shit and 75% of american audiences will buy anything and think it's good just because it's marketed.

  • Don't dis the mainstream, why did/do so many people know of Jimmy Hendrix and have posters on their walls? ACDC? Independent music is necessary for variety, the corporate labels bring it to the rest of the world so others can listen and be inspired. The reason why we have poor music in the mainstream today is because of technology: it's easier to make a voice rather than find one. Also with all of the ease of access (ex.Youtube) less money is made = less budget for smaller genres like punk. See?

  • Testicles

  • In case some of you are wondering what he was referring to when he was talking about noise, Noize is a genre of music that is extremely experimental and is made up of distortion on top of distortion. A popular example to look up here on youtube is Merzbow.

Also, Henry Rollins is wise beyond millenia.

  • Good corporate food analogy

  • This is why Henry Rollins has ruled fo years!!! He is preaching beyond the gospel!!

  • Indeed, the most interesting music is not on the tv or radio.

  • I know Henry Rollins from black flag and rollins band. The Clash and the Ramones were signed and they even played in stadiums around the world. Now basement bands dont need music studios to put a video on youtube. This is my opinion its not about being "punk" its about the band and making music/noise and just self expression DIY. If a studio ask for money just take it, and fight to keep your control on how it sounds. Remember Rollins Band played at Woodstock 94 with Good ol Green day.

  • @J5MARLON Yeah man, it's ALL about making music the way YOU want to make it.. Nobody can change your sound and a TRUE band isn't gonna let some fat corporate cat alter their music

  • This is a mystification of the punk mythos. C'mon Henry, you are insulting your intelligence.

  • ...as well

  • I love Henry Rollins, but he too often talks like Hardcore Punk was the only music that ever existed! He seems to overlook bands like Pink Floyd and The Beatles how were even more innovative then punk bands ever will be and they to had to sweat it out in dingy clubs to start off with...

  • @Nickman5000 He talks about what he lived. What he had at hand, I believe that that was he cares the most.

  • @Nickman5000 No he doesn't, Hardcore Punk is just his favorite

  • @Nickman5000 well thats sort of what he´s talking about. If u put effort and heart into your music and really put effort into playing is often considered punk even though you might play pop hiphop or metal

  • I wish Henry Rollins would punch the lead singer of nickelback in the face.

  • @romanivan123 Even Justin Beiber could kick Chad Kroger's Douchebag No talent ass.

  • tell us more, pampaw..

  • m'k............................

  • So fucking true!

  • this is interesting but 8 people and greasy stoners in a club is the lamest thing ever. what you want to do is throw a house, back yard party, picnic, block party and have 100-200 people. charge for the keg and make your money that way. you build a fan base before you even consider going into an open mic night club and 8 people showing up. We used to go to raging parties with 250 people MINIMUM by the beach.

  • i'd honestly like to see henry rollins' ideal society come to fruition and see how long it lasts. i really like him, i like his music, and i like to listen to his rants, but i'm not behind him 100% of the time. methinks he needs to stop making enemies of everyone who isn't henry rollins and take a chill pill. henry, if for some reason you were to ever read this comment: you spend a lot of time ripping into the punk community for being hypocrites, and rightfully so; start living by your own words

  • Oh yeah man fuck the man...rage against the machine...down with the system......until you get older and poor and find out that very few rebels get paid well

  • Ever since Nickleback entered the scene and Soundgarden left, I quit listening to radio

  • I get it, there's no passion anymore..hence the zombatar.

  • 3:35 3 provinces over haha justin bieber

  • Haha, everytime I see a Christian rock band like Creed or something I go 'Yeauuhh!' just like that.

  • I think a DVD with Henry Rollins and Ted Nugent would be one hell of a rant-fest :D

  • What he said. Cool like that.

  • i tried to help ,,we play really loud..))..grandeeeeee Henry Rollins. love dat man)-

  • lol henry rollins wouldnt have a problem with the radio or mtv if they played black flag

  • @bechilled202 No, he'd be pissed.

  • BRILLIANT

  • 8 people? Agree with rollins but not on that. All you need to do is go back to playing parties. Start playing beach house parties, college parties, keggars, whatever, then you get a small following if you're good, eventually playing clubs(because you bring a following). That's where it's at and that's what the hardcore punk bands did and became big. But you're going to need to be original looking and sounding.

  • It's too bad that SST is so concerned about copywright infringement. Its about sharing. Not making money you SST corporate whores.

  • @cmckeown72 - I'm not so sure it's about SST being greedy as it is about SST having issues with Youtube selling advertising space on SST-related videos. The story is explained here: blogs.laweekly.com/westcoastsound/2011/12/sst_records_youtube_videos_pul.php

  • @cmckeown72 greg ginn got greedy. he made some decent money on black flag but he became a greedy fuck.

  • How to start a band - build a big fire in the woods, bang sticks on logs, howl at the moon. Start from there.

  • When did they start installing dressing rooms on death row?

  • here here!!!!!!!!

  • Yep, genious.

  • he most not of seen lady gaga most scary thing ive seen in along time

  • omg this guy is hilarious. and intelligent. but more hilarious than anything else

  • Dear Henry i love you- marry me.

  • fucking love you henry!

  • hi asl?

  • Rocking the USO jacket nice.

  • I love Henry but there is more to music than diy and the "punk ethic" Just because it's catchy and fun and not so intelligent and not full of attitude (which is just as fake as the rest -yes, it is), doesn't mean some people can't enjoy it. Then again, Nickleback SUCKS! lol

  • @TheReligionkills figure out what you want to say and try again.

  • @artynerd I did. Learn how to understand a nuanced opinion before you make one.

  • He's a fucking genius.

  • "...and they dont look very dangerous." Hahaha WIN xP

  • Yes, but how do us DIY artists make a living???

  • bullsh*t!

the guy at Subway makes me the best Meatball Marinara in the world!

  • Have you all noticed thigs like the Velvet Underground and Nico uploaded in full on You Tube?

Interesting... Now you dont need a record label.

Joey from the Desasterz. Check out, the Parisians, everybody!!!

  • I hear Henry's single. Mmmmmmm...You know he's got some tricks.

  • I want to agree with Rollins totally but as someone who goes to noise shows and held them at my house, there are is A LOT of crap. There needs to be some buffer between the shitty CDR or tape people and the overly packaged stadium nonsense. I'd prefer a band invest a little bit of money and make and print an actual record than a poor CDR or tape.

  • @fickifickmaster I just don't agree with the idea that the cheapest route is the best route. These noise artists haven't taken any time to learn any musical skill or write songs. That's all I'm saying. I'm still in support of those who make independent music. And I like Wolf Eyes ;)

  • I agree with you. If bands don't have the money to invest in packaging and printing they can at least put some work into it to make it look interesting.

  • @fickifickmaster If any of the bozos that make new music had any content or originality in their music they would have a fighting chance. in fact that's all the early beach hardcore punk bands from Socal did. they made tapes and got their music out that way. in fact they were ANTI-PUTTING OUT RECORDS. was way cooler back then.

  • @fickifickmaster indeed. i've heard so many bedroom noise tapes, and I could put them all together and it would sound exactly the same. I love noise, but it takes talent in order to tame it into something unique.

  • @fickifickmaster I hear you, but there's something to be said for bands who completely deny the status quo...taking the road least traveled to "go their own way." I think that is what he is saying, IMHO.

  • @willard39 for sure, I still enjoy booking lots of underground shows and helping uphold the network for touring bands all over the U.S. and out of the country.

  • @JonnySpeeding He is not an idiot at all. Henry is anything but an idiot. Only an idiot would call someone with intelligence an idiot and it makes you sounds worse. He is actually right, only you are just too full of yourself to actually give a shit or listen to anyone else but the sound of your own selfish voice. Oh and he understands the times today quite clearly, he is more active on the scene and so deeply entrenched then you ever will be. Stop being such a fucking asshole and a jerkoff

  • his words make me feel like there's hope. i hope his intentions are pure.

  • @NeoLibsSuck - he was being interviewed by Canadians.

  • :) Henry Rollins for president!.

  • hahahaha, fuck hotdog music, no one wants to put a ring on that shit.

  • Thank you! I feel better now. I agree 100%!

  • I think if there were some more Ronald Jenkees on the airwaves, then Henry Rollins would have more to say.

  • Preach it brother!

  • 14 people eat Oscar Mayer Wieners for nutrition

  • Amazing! Rollins says what I think but with a greater vocabulary. Hah!

Music of today (as heard on corporate radio) is nothing but shit. People buy into this shit because they are told to... that whole "follow the leader/sheep-minded" mentality so many have.

I, personally, cannot wait until the major labels go away. Let's force musicians to, once again, write music... not worry about their makeup.

  • @ihkwren the internet has been the worst thing to happen to music.

We've not had a profitable year since the early 2000s.

Audio engineers, that used to have solid careers, now have to go from gig to gig, hoping to make enough to scrape by.

We've been utterly devastated by these thieves and looters, shamelessly helping themselves to our property!!

I've watched the industry collapse, as a result of these locusts.

I think we should just ban the internet, who cares about facebooks!!

  • @AnonymousElektron I, being a DIY musician, rely on the internet to get my music out. Labels destroyed one of my bands, ripping it apart to use members for this band, that band...etc. I could therefore care less if labels exist. As far as I am concerned, they "hinder" the true expression of feeling, emotion, art...etc. So, that's neat you think something that helps people like me should be banned. It's helps directly combat the idiocies of the industry. Our collective voice should not be stifled

  • @ihkwren cool story brah

  • so THAT'S how you pronounce miasma

  • Henry, along with Jello, you're the BEST spoken word artist! You're dead on!!!

  • Well said!!!

  • i love this guy, but its ignorant as fuck to say that just because music is popular and on the radio dosent make it bad, there are those bands that dont have talent in their music, but they still made something, whether or not you enjoy it is up to you, but dont deem it bad because its popular, if its not a popularity contest, then why care about popularity? isnt it all about the music? should be.

  • @powdereddonut I dont think its ignorant to say that, lets be honest 95% of it is terrible and 95% of people that listen to it are 'casual' music listeners who have no idea what so ever about music. They go from one fad to another, i have many 'discussions' with people who listen to 'radio' songs and have confirmed everything 'ignorant' i ever thought about them. There is some good music, mostly bad though lol. There is no love for creativty in commercial music, its all about whats popular now.

  • @letthechaosreign What's wrong with being a casual music listener? Not everyone looks at music the same way. Sure, we absolutely love it, but to most people they just want something easy to take in. There's nothing wrong with that. They're not ignorant.

  • @mardgn81 the music industry is going to die unless we can get laws passed that protect our intellectual property.

We're in such a rut because kids today don't understand the concept of a freaking compact disc, or letting artists get fairly compensated for their hard work!!

  • @AnonymousElektron What does any of that have to do with what I wrote?

  • @powdereddonut you're not getting his point. his point is that many more talented and more deserving musicians are not getting the attention that they should. there are a lot of musicians out there who are far more talented and possess a great deal of technical ability that many of today's popular musicians just don't have. getting popular in music these days doesn't have much to do with skill anymore, unfortunately.

  • Fucking spot on.

  • watched this while unpacking my new Gods Of Tundra tapes that came in the mail today

  • fuck yes henry rollins gets it!

  • WORD

  • and he talks of how ppl look? and his point is? Christian rock??? Hes pissed off eh? Interesting that he doesnt have peace from his own contribution musically. I wish him well. He wants truth in music. pure unprocessed... I wonder if ever used distortion overdrive... in the mix. he should come out with a peddle called ACNE

    hehe. lets hear it Rollins!

  • HEMISPHEAR CORTEX INVADERS LABWORKS GERMANY

    have a listen

  • And not the radio djs. thats if you can find one on the radio anymore. hears a track for ya.. i bet its all analog too. corporate radio sucks i agree but start looking, stop talking and start listening. Make some music and let the music speak. Someone post a new track of his that has substance please.

  • Wub wub wub wub WUUUUUUBBB VEERROWWOWOWOW bbbbvvvvvvv!

  • Just a few things to say here.. musically speaking beauty is in the ear of the beholder. ITS NOT WHAT YOU HAVE BUT WHAT YOU DO WITH IT. yes soooo much music is over processed... but theres some great music out there. for example.. skinny puppy rocked the samplers and electronics and vocoders... Sure i grew up on dk... but I loved a lot of other music too. It seems like he like to complains a lot about electronic music as I heard him rant about djs recently.

  • Just saying, those pop songs he calls "unloved", ask engineer that spent 10 hours mixing that lead vocal in if he didn't pour himself into it.

  • @fartbarfunkel That isn't love, he's doing a job, which is to use every computer trick available to suck all he soul and feeling out of the vocals. He's compensating for the singers lack of ability to sing and what you end up with is essentially a robot replacing the human performance. I know a lot of engineers and while they love many aspects of their jobs, that is certainly not one of them.

  • All true.

  • I like that he is wearing a USO shirt. Thats pretty fuckin sweet.

  • He is right music is doing better than ever you can have almost anything you want

  • at 1:14 he really wanted to say bullshit lol

  • @dollarmonos he hates hipsters tho, he makes fun of them

  • lol hes making fun of so many groups its great

  • YEEEAHHH! YEEEAHH! LOL. Hank rules.

  • another home run.......

  • made me think of thge shitty bands that are playing at the moment, the ones you can buy tickets to see only if you have a mastercard and then it's still costs $300 per ticket.

fuck you eminem, you're pretty shit and your music all sounds the same anyway

  • @rea1high well said my friend

  • haha he is a fucking g.

  • If you say music is dead, you're listening to it in the wrong places.

  • Music state in 2011 is DEAD. Due to all this Emo bullshit and Metalcore bull crap getting popular. We need REAL music like Oldies Punk rock, Grunge, and real METAL.

  • Rollins is the MAN!

  • Im 50 so Im from the same era as Henry. Henry is being a bit over-nostalgic and remembering things not quite as accurately as they were. He is correct on the state of music today but he's being a little to idealistic on "the good old days"

  • You helped Henry!! It wasnt for nothin doll. This is the ONLY shit that can make me miss my teen years. I would never EVER want to go back,,,,,for anything else. Just real music and being free and havin fun and being creative and makin the honkies really angry har har har Love ya HENRYYYYY

  • Henry always calls out U2 for being what is bad with Music, He tells it like it is!

  • Comment removed

  • So fucking funny

  • I liked it when Jax Teller brutally killed him in the men's room on Sons of Anarchy. Too bad it wasn't real. HR is a big douche.

  • This guy thinks way to much. It's fucking music. It isn't going to change anything. I will never believe otherwise. Just another burnt out self-loathing musician to tell everyone else how they should express themselves. SELF EXPRESSION? It's obvious from the way he speaks. Angry, bitter, self hating. As are most right brained self absorbed artist types. Keep yappin' Henry, there are plenty of Cobain types out there buying your BS.

  • @tatsandteles You don't even realize you're making him hold more clout do you? You clearly don't think enough, and sure as fuck don't think before you post your mundane garble. Enjoy your can of shit, on sale @ FYE.

  • @tatsandteles Did you just compare Cobain and Rollins on the basis that they weren't happy? That's moronic. Most smart people in the world are smart enough to have reasons to be less than happy. Nobody thought music was changing anything. Music doesn't change the world, the world changes music. That was the point. You suck immensely and are vastly ignorant.

  • @ThaDeeStylee I didn't say that. Cobain types. As in these 'vastly ignorant' people who live and die by the words of these so called Prophets. Love the last line though, speaks volumes of your intellect.

  • @tatsandteles It does actually, considering how uninformed you are. Making the argument that mainstream artists who let their producers relentlessly adjust their music and define their appearances are still all about self-expression and Henry here is merely intolerant and jaded? Sure dude. Whatever you say.

  • @ThaDeeStylee Dude? Did you just write 'Dude'?? God, what am I even arguing for.....

  • @tatsandteles No I TYPED it... because this is the internet, and we are on computers. I should have just called you cocksucker. WHATEVER YOU SAY, COCKSUCKER.

  • @ThaDeeStylee That really hurt, 'DUDE'...

  • @tatsandteles It wasnt supposed to, I just figured if using 'dude' was beneath you you'd like me to use something else. Everyone can see your comments, and how you obviously think you know all about the music industry, life and the world. We can all also see that you're full of shit by how your argument revolves around insulting the speaker. Kinda bypasses the argument that you started, right after you started it. Noone who really has anything to say argues like that. Teenagers argue like that.

  • @tatsandteles This guy thinks way too much? xD You're right buddy, I don't wanna waste my time listening to someone who intelligently speaks out their mind, I wanna be like your type, as opposed to "Cobain type" whatever the fuck that is, "thinking" (hey, we don't want to overdo it, don't we) that everything is alright with the world and the music today. You must be one happy camper, aren't you? But I'm glad to see that you're not self hating, I mean, how could you be... -.-

  • @TonicGeek Another overthinker. Shit has been hitting the fan since man has been walking this earth. You think this is something new?? Just because someone is 'enlightening' your thought process doesn't mean the rest of us have to buy it. He's just another wandering soul looking for a purpose in life. The answers are alot simpler than you think.

  • @tatsandteles No, I havent' been enlightened by Henry Rollins, but this just happens to be my opinion too. And no, you don't have to buy it, but you don't have to come off as a self righteous wise man in your comments either. I admit that nostalgia has to do something with thinking that the music and life in general was a bit better in the old days, but as you said, the shit has hit the fans since the dawn of time, we might not be able to change that, but we can at least admit it to ourselves.

  • Small venues and basements > Stadiums and huge stages

  • ive been watching henry rollins interviews for like 3 hours this dude is the truth

  • It sounds like Nirvana when they first started out. With the Basement parties and all that... Henry Rollins is a guy who for once has his head on straight..

    Cheers.

    - Nick

  • this human personifies illness. the cure is a healthy dose of fresh bullets.

  • 1:21 LOL....yeah , yeah haha...

  • Comment removed

  • @SwirlyBrokenHearts what the hell is your problem?

  • @matthashotcakes lol you think the internet makes people different which is wweird "having civil, well thought out discussions are so rare these days. the internet seems to have taken so much way" what does the internet have to with how well people discuss or argue?!?!? the interent has not changed peoples attitudes, me for example will always be ignorant, stubborn, bias, rude and always will be, you may need to deal with it. dont write bullcrap in future LOL

  • hahah what a douche bag, too bad the future made him look like an old battered leather case just about ready for the skip, and he still proves to be one till this day. i hate anti-perfectionists, think your badass and shit, come out with a lot of horse shit as well, like anyone has ever poked black flag about being a shit band?? that they have the wrong attitude and approach to music? bias as fuck. i havnt said i hated black flag, this guys attitude tho. stop bitching

  • in regards to henry's opinions: he's for the most part spot-on: so much is missing in modern music. (maybe it was missing all along.) heck, shitty music has always existed, even in his day. and it will continue to live on thru the pervasive mainstream media. but i still agree with him in saying that true artistry can be found nowadays, but i'd go further than him in saying that it can even be found outside of the DIY scene. it's everywhere because it means different things to different people.

  • the more u talk the more i think about how pretentious you are

  • I also see a lot of people putting career goals ahead of musical goals. Practically no one earns a living for very long, if at all, doing music. And if you try to tailor your music to what is marketable and profitable, it’s almost guaranteed that you will fail. Just make what is satisfying for you to play and hear. If it’s good and other people like it, then maybe you can take it further. If not, just enjoy the process. -Kurt Ballou of Converge

  • 7 dislikes are by people that think shit like Creed or Justin Bieber are music....

  • I think he was just describing Jutin Beiber there at the end.

  • Solid state digitally enhanced midrange. I love that. What a perfect way to sum it up. I am inspired, truly inspired by his inspiration. I have my just barely not falling apart bass drum (and hand-held mallet, 'cause I'm not much of a drummer) my mega-cheap no name snare, home-made hihat, my squier telecrarster with GFS pickups, my somewhat rebuilt Hammond amp from a 1961 M-100 organ, my home made pine cabinets...I am the guy with the primitive equipment he's talking about!

  • YEAAAAAAH. YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

  • i love you henry

  • That's all well and good, Henry, but I can't make music a career if it doesn't pay the bills. I think it's important to take back the areas for the good music, and not be complacent about talent not being held in high regard by the majority. I don't think it has to be that way. 14-year-olds will always have their remedial pop, but I really think most adults are looking for someone to show them something better, and we can achieve that.

  • 7 people are Nickelback

  • @bews522a Yhhyyeeeeaaahhh

  • @bews522a : HAHAHA !

  • I'm not really a fan of Rollins but this was a cool rant.

  • Thanks to youtube the public now has a chance to hear every recorded form of music. My only question is why do people here a Lady Gaga on a MTV2, the radio and on youtube with a million views but Black Flag is still in the thousands views.
