I am not a mathematician, but I have made fractals with a free program and I had wonderful results. I do have an associates in computer animation though. Do you consider me an artist?

I never was interested in math until I got interested in fractals. Then it all just branched out from there. :P wish i had paid this much attention in high school.

I use Apophysis, it is so good that only a moron would be able to make ugly fractals. but with the colors some of these people pick lol...

Electricspaceodyssey: You can easily pick other colors without "defeating" the purpose.. ultimately the mathematician just picks some colors, as you know there are many versions of the mandelbrot with other sets of colors.
