  • I know why you got so many dislikes ... there are a lot of idiots around here because u talking absolute sense

  • Why would anyone take advice from someone that is not in shape?

  • @thunder72191

thats for rehabilitation , rehab. is not training

  • Mad accent bro!

  • The only machines I use are a washing machine, and the dishwasher.

  • Nice accent bro ;)

  • i totally agree with free weight dead lifts they will rip you up.

  • All machine are poop for fat loss. Eat less calories, far simpler. Lol at belly fat, as if you get to choose where it comes off. genetics control that people.

  • @keironewoodgate anyone who thinks that genetics controls belly fat is seriously mislead. The only reasons people blame genetics is because the parents feed their kids the same crap that got them to where they are. When people take ownership they realise that genetics rarely ever plays a role in obesity.

  • @DPMperformance Both are my parents are overweight, im healthy, and actually have an 8 pack, and my older bro has a 6 pack, Both of us are healthy, so i agree, genetic obesity is bull shit.

  • @DPMperformance I have a question about the cross trainer. What if you put the tension up and do it really fast for a minute and then slow down for a minute and repeat

  • @myj0urney if your goal is to lose fat you'd be better off doing a high intensity session with some dumbbells if you are injury free (ie superset woodchops with T Push Ups)

  • @myj0urney if your goal is to lose fat you'd be better off doing a high intensity session with some dumbbells if you are injury free (ie superset woodchops with T Push Ups)

  • the only machine i use for my workouts is the rowing machine and that is only because i row crew and it is good endurance training

  • very surprised to hear the cross trainers are useless. I agree with everything else you say but not that.

  • @dibble2005 when it comes to fat loss they are useless because most people can bludge on there not work hard enough to maximise fat burning and get the benefit out of an interval session.

  • To lose belly fat you may be right these machines dont offer much good, but your video makes out all these machines are useless when they are not.

  • @hanginghimself when it comes to losing that they are. That's all this video is about and that's all that matters here

  • @DPMperformance I agree they are pretty much useless for belly fat. Far better are simple things like leg raises etc... Move the bottom half rather than the top. I.E. leg raises rather than sit ups

  • Comment removed

  • Good video, but the assisted pull up machine also has an assisted dip machine, and i think that is good if you can't do dips. I can only do 11 dips and at the end of the workout if i get tired and can do only like 2-5 dips i'll use the assisted machine to get a really good pump

  • @ZboneWalker I think dips are a fast way to wreck your shoulders. They place them in an awkward position and I recommend people avoid them especially if they work at a desk and have upper back/shoulder tightness anyway.

  • @DPMperformance I don't know about you, but i find them to be the best exercise for triceps, and haven't had any shoulder, or other joint problems...

  • @DPMperformance Agree with you on dips! Shoulder, rotator cuff and wrists due to the position are under intense pressure and can be damaging to some people.

  • Free weights are good but some machines are a god send.free weights can beat up your joints to

  • @sz42781 only if you're not training smart or using good form. Same goes for anything if those two things apply

  • @DPMperformance My goals are more geared tword aesthetics. I used to do 100% free weights all the time for years. I started experimenting with machines and found that I was actually able to focus and work the muscle better in a more comfortable position with certain machines, especially HAMMER STRENGTH stuff. I love the abcoaster, very effective for me, not every workout though. For me free weights become hurky jerky after a while and I need to just focus on the movement.

  • Machines are beneficial for beginners and people with sedentary lifestyles. Could you imagine getting a 60 year old woman to do barbell squats? NOPE. Start them off on a leg press, swiss ball squats or even sit to stand. IMHO, this video is very narrow minded and only relevant to experienced gym users which the poster fails mention.

  • @MrDynamo5 WRONG. What's wrong with a 60 year old woman doing barbell squats? So long as she can squat properly in the first place. And if you think bodyweight exercises and free weights exercises are only for advanced trainees I really feel sorry for you mate.

  • @tigerfanfanatic72 i agree the smith is good to do on certin thing at dif times i would leave this one in but the rest is pretty much junk not the pull up thing i think bc i know i used it to get to where i could do 5 full reall pull ups. you just have ti just keep droping the eght thats helpng you get up to the point where you dont need any then just do real ones

  • @tigerfanfanatic72 no it still sucks dick.

  • All those machines have their strong points versus the other exercises you mentioned, some/most people will not be confident to do such things as barbell squats and deadlifts as they can potentially be dangerous. I dont belive in arguing one tool over another, but to use a combination of those tools

  • my personal trainer said that if he ever saw me on a machine he would tear it apart and kill me with the pieces... i don't blame him.

  • @Dogman022908 i like the guy already!

  • @Dogman022908 There should be no issue to incorporate a combination of machines and free weights. It also depends on the client's conditioning and what limitations he/she may have. Your personal trainer is biased.

  • I still use a smith machine for squats as well as doing normal squats. Normal squats first then when the stabilizers have gone their distance use the smith and fry the bigger muscles as they can take alot more. Not even heavy weights on the smith. Just a slow negative movement followed by a strong drive up but I never lock out my knees.

  • If your advice aims for people who want to lose weight, are mostly people who don't know much about exercies with free weights, how to do them correct, effect and without injuries in the worst case.So machines would help them in the beginning,in my opinion. But I have to agree with you, free weights are better.

  • I mix it up, free weights and machines and bodyweight :D

  • machines are terrible for so many reason .

1-they isolate muscles which leads to building of not so functional mass because cns learns to contract them alone, fact

2- none of the machines work the stabilizer muscle groups because the weight is already stable

3-thesmith makes the bar go in a linear course which is not the natural course of a squat

4-leg extensions are for grinding th knees , while the free weight ass to grass olymbic squat helps correct knee problems , fact

  • @ahmednabil couldn't agree with you more - spot on

  • @ahmednabil very rarely can you truly isolate a muscle. In fact I cannot think of one machine movement that isolates a muscle group. Given you can isolate triceps, but that can be done off of machines as well.

  • @2TheGuy2

pecs biceps quads hamstrings calves are isolated with machines , its not a prejudice against machines its just that they are not in any way as good as freeweights of boduweight training

  • @ahmednabil Machines have there place you forget there is deload weeks after hard training with free weights.

  • I watched this video just for the accent and just for the handsome man giving advice of it.

  • The exercise MUST be comfortable, fun, efficient, safe and easy to use....those are the only things that matter in bodybuilding exercise....Of course different people find different things: comfortable, easy, fun, efficient and safe...so just like there are many different exercises and variety of ways to do each one, so are there perspectives on each exercise and variety of each exercise....to summarize....."Be yourself...have fun...do what is right for YOU"

    peace

  • everything has there pros and conds, I use machines to cool down and concentrate on forms after pounding on heavy weights. for example side laterals, I use machine because I can focus on muscle contraction and not lifting using my back, and it works great.

  • I have to disagree with what you say about the Smith's machine. I find very beneficial if I don't have a spotter and want to lift heavy weights without the fear off dropping the bar on myself. The Smith machine is also good for people with injuries because it helps release tension off the rotar cuffs. I agree with everything else you have said though. Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi

  • @JacobCurt fair point but this is aimed at people wanting to lose weight. They should be squatting using free weights

  • @DPMperformance many of my female clients have lost weight using smith machine the muscles dont know the difference

  • @50centfaneminem imagine how much more they'd have lost if you got them to do proper squats? The muscles will know the difference when they're getting more of a workout.

  • nautilus, what a waste of effort.

  • the assisted pull up machine is good for a few reasons...

    1. you can build up to full pull ups if you cant do any un assisted pull ups

    2. if you're injured you can still do pullups with assitance

    3. thats all ive got haha

  • @LHD4life I see your point but i still think a recline row or cheat chin ups (especially just the down motion) are a better way to lead into a real chin up

  • @DPMperformance Yeah fair enough :) great vid though

  • the point is that beginners who start using these will continue to use them because they feel comfy to them. i see it all the time. smith machine squats? worst of all. yet i see trainers training girls on them, instead of learning a proper squat. leg extension machines, same thing, will fuck up your knees worse than any squat. same as those back extension machines, just deadlift. only one i'm ok with is lat pulldowns, if done right.

  • @secutorclaudius agree mate got it in one. Most trainers are space cadets that's why they use this stuff and cause damage to their clients. A real trainer actually knows why these ones are bad as you mentioned.

  • I think assisted pull up machine is alright, as although you say there is other ways, i think it is the best way for people who can't do pull ups to learn. Otherwise for most of the machines i agree with you, especially for that first abb thing. But for some machines though they can be good, like i have a broken up a few months ago, i wasn't really able to do squats, thus just used leg press, i know not as good but still an ok replacement

  • @rohangiga broken arm*

  • i've been training for years now, and dumbells feel so much more natural, whenever i used to use a machine i had the feeling i was training one side harder than the other, or is it just me ? : /

  • @whiteraider got it in one

  • lol "this machine is the bane of my existance in the gym" so true I hate smith machines they feel retarded, make you look dumb, get nothing done, and are an unnatural movement in most cases. Why so many dislikes on this video? People scared of the ugly truth?

  • @Jehanzeb14 it's cause filthy Americans are always disliking...

  • @Jehanzeb14 well said. Unfortunately people are stuck in their old ways and they don't like being told different

  • @Jehanzeb14 Why so many dislikes? Because a lot of the stuff said in the video is completely wrong...

  • Dude, stop sending all the noobs to the free weight section, they're gonna crowd us out!

  • Completely disagree with the video. Machines are a tool. You use any tool wrong, it can have consequences.

  • @Triple88a totaly agree. both (free weights and machines )have theyre benefits

  • Chuck Norris uses machines.

  • @blahwastaken does Chuck Norris need to lose weight mate? Read the title of the video before you make a comment like that

  • @blahwastaken fuck chuck norris he looks like shit machines blow and should only be used to compliment free weight compound movements

  • @Jehanzeb14 Oh you're tough.

  • @Jehanzeb14 Exactly, machines can COMPLIMENT the free weight movements, so I don't agree that they're completely useless. So if I'm going to use a machine I often do it last. e.g. the leg press has given me massive thighs and has broken me through sticking points on my deadlift and squat.

When I saw the title of this video I first thought it was implying that you can spot reduce fat, but I'm assuming that this video is actually to discourage that myth?

  • @MariuszPuddingness the video is aimed at people wanting to lose weight - so they normally search for belly fat as a keyword. Machines might be alright for bodybuilding (as you mentioned) but for fat loss you get better bang for your buck using free weights and body weight ie multi joint movements

  • @DPMperformance right, i understand.

  • @blahwastaken chuck norris doesn't use machines, machines use chuck norris

  • he is missing the point of machines. They are great place to start. You have to leave them behind once you get going of course but they are the best place to start.

  • @Avoidnow so you shouldn't learn to squat properly first using your body weight or do push ups properly? You're kidding mate if you think doing a chest press on a machine is going to be half as effective as a push up.

  • The leg press maching, the leg curl machine and the smith machine are useful machines. I use to squat 405LBS (8 plates) back in the day. I took off for a long time and hurt my back doing almost half the weight, yeah pretty gay of me, my fault. Today I do leg presses because it keeps my back out of it. I know, it does not hit the full core of it but each machine has its purpose..........well almost each machine. I was a free weights guy too but you have to learn to adapt with injury and age

  • Hes 100% right

  • thank you and does this apply to us females?

  • @Ithink998 yes everyone - the principles of fat loss are the same for men and women

  • why so many thumbs down? everything hes saying is spot on. every professional athlete and bodybuilder would say the same thing

  • @zazenzach unfortunately people are blind to what works mate. If you bang your head against a brick wall for long enough you'll get brain damage like the space cadets that disagree

  • Agree with u. Except the assisted pull up machine, I've always preferred chin-ups/pull-ups over a lat pull down. BUT its only to be used if you can do less than 5 bodyweight chin-ups/pull-ups. Its good for aid at first but once u gain enough strength ditch it. Otherwise fuck machines!

  • Machine in all are a fucking waste of time except for some of the hammer strength machines there ok :P Free weights FTW!!!

  • Cam rock like Bourne =_='

    Another free-weight enthusiast.

Seriously, the best thing I found to reduce bodyfat is marine circuit, run push drag carry splint you know it.

  • How is a crosstrainer bad... low impact cardio?

  • @Zelgraz1 how is low impact cardio going to have any fat loss benefits? Read the title of the video in full

  • @DPMperformance are you kidding? so my bones and joints dont take damage im still going to increase my heart rate enough to burn fat... and to remove belly fat and not just remove fat.. is stupid stop learning from books please

  • nothing wrong with the assisted pull up, if used on a weak assist weight meaning you can only push out a few reps

  • @TheMrduttywine recline rows are 100 times more effective

  • @DPMperformance does not mean other does not have a affect

  • @DPMperformance that is absolute bullshit and so is your video, what yo should be saying is that there are better exercises than the ones youre criticising but they are far from useless, anything with enough resistance done with good programming will build muscle and strength. Also ,beginners without access to a personal trainer would be better using machines than no strength training at all. There are so many brainless persoanl trainers out there its a joke.

  • @scarred10 you are just another 'brave' keyboard warrior mate. The only reason i'm leaving these space cadet comments up is to show other people that the MYTH about beginners using machines is wrong.

If beginners can't do exercises using their own body weight PROPERLY ie squats, push ups etc then they shouldn't be going anywhere near a machine.

Get out from behind your computer and see what actually works in the real world with people getting real fat loss before you criticise others.

  • @DPMperformance i agree about machines being less effective ,thats obvious, you however said they were useless and never to be used, that is the statement of an uneducated trainer of which the industry is full.I have a degree in ex phys and rehab and worked in that area for 9 yrs but recently moved into biomedical engineering. The VAST majority of trainers ive met have no exercise degree but do part time short courses and dont understand the core sciences underpinning their career choice.

  • @scarred10 mate I've got a bachelor of health science and to be honest it isn't worth the paper it's written on. I've learned more in the field by living my work and researching with real clients and the latest methods for the last 10 years then a book teaches me.

Machines are a waste of time if you're looking to lose weight. End of Story. Why train for an hour using all that stuff when you can do a much better - and effective workout - in only 30 mins or less. & yes most PT's are space cadets

  • Absolutely nothing wrong with the leg press.

  • 1. Nice accent.

    2. Completely agree with the smith machine comment. Those are worse than useless.

But, where are the barbels? No gym is really a gym without em.

  • @chevelle1258 yeah i see where you're coming from. barbells are okay but I wouldn't have em if I was to start a gym. Rather use tyres, sledgehammers, kettlebells, chin up bars and plenty of bodyweight action instead

  • @DPMperformance Eh, to each is his own i guess.

  • Don't exclude them ... do both freeweight AND machines.

  • i do legs press after squat

  • totally right on that piece of crap ab machine, i see so many people ride that thing like a little cart just shooting back and forth, worthless shite

  • @TacoLoco1000 definitely!

  • @sampsalol you are unfortunately woefully uneducated on the subject--you should really read up on it.

muscles burn fat throughout the day, while the cardio's benefits end the moment you step off the machine.

then again, since you're probably just a skinny kid, none of this matters to you. don't worry, you'll eventually get fat latter in life. i hope you enjoy your treadmill then!

  • I never understood the assisted chin up machine when lat pull downs exist. The ab machine never made sense to me either. The leg curl isn't bad. It can help reduce the chance of hamstring tendinitis in running athletes(specifically sports with a lot of sprinting) because they can work their hamstrings after their back is fatigued. From the number of pulled hamstrings and random injuries caused by hamstring weakness, I'd never recommend not doing a hamstring exercise.

  • Pretty much spot on. Decline leg press is almost as good as a squat because u are working against gravity (that video had a weird one where u sit flat), leg curl is good if your looking to isolate but deadlifts are better for overall strength. The assisted chin up machine is laughable (didnt even know that existed) and the ab machine speaks for itself. I wouldnt say machines are useless. They are good for beginners who havent got technique yet, but after 1-2 months u should be using free weights

  • @GeneticPurity I STILL can't believe all the idiots who think that you can spot reduce!

  • @GeneticPurity what about your stomach?

  • @soapsdz You cannot spot reduce, like I said 5 months ago. If you exercise to reduce fat %, you'll be losing that fat from all over your body, generally the most amount of body fat is stored in your lower stomach for everyone, but even so, you won't burn more fat from your lower stomach than any other part of the body when exercising, it might just seem like you are.

  • I like this guy. Fuck machines.

  • @kelgrael77 Agreed

  • To lose fat you need to do cardio. With about 70-75% of MAX heart rate for 30-60mins. Now lets not spoil our hard work with a crappy diet, make sure you are careful on what you eat.

  • @Slaterking2010 you're taking the piss right?

  • @DPMperformance no its the truth. My own experience. I did tons of sit ups crunch, bicycling you name it every abs workout in the book and still no 6 pack. Went on a stick diet and did lots of cardio and actually did less abs workouts and now i have 6 pack abs.

  • @Slaterking2010 yes... that will do wonders for boosting your metabolism... *face palm*

  • For fat loss yes, you shouldn't be using those machines. Stick to cardio and lighter weights. For people new to STRENGTH training ALL of those machines have a purpose! Out of shape people don't usually have great balance or coordination. Using machines helps them lift weight comfortably...raising self esteem and lowering cortisol. Don't knock a smith rack either, they're great when your gym partner calls in sick......any exercise is still exercise.

  • @deejdubya cardio and light weights are the WRONG way to lose fat. High intensity interval training is best mixed in with supersets. That was the old method cardio and light weights and it takes forever to work if at all.

Newbies should learn to master bodyweight exercises before they try anything else regardless of whether it's in a gym or at home

  • @DPMperformance Cardio and healthy food is the best way to go for fat loss, not super hard short workouts.

  • @sampsalol you are an idiot.

    also, you are wrong.

    and probably fat.

    or really skinny.

    i hate you.

  • @sampsalol you probably already got the mesage but i'll make you tripple sure. that zamolxis guy is correct. when you lift weights your muscles burn callories after your workout. hopefuly getting into your fat reserves and burning off fat for energy.

  • @franky223364 Sorry mate, it doesn't work that way. For an example, you don't get a visible sixpack if you only do ab excercises, the fat doesn't go anywhere without cardio. You should prolly read everything I wrote and try to understand it. If you don't understand what I wrote, don't reply.

  • @sampsalol all you wrote on the comment i replyed to was cardio and healthy food is the best way to lose fat. i read that weightlifting burns more calories overtime than cardio exercises because as soon as you get off your treadmill you stop burning calories and for a day or two after weightlifting your muscles will continue to burn calories and overtime will burn more calories than a cardio workout. and if your going to burn more calories than you take in your body will use fat to satisfy muscl

  • when doing heavy squats you lower back muscles will exaust before you thighs, in that case for working the thighs, leg press is a better exercise for some people, but i guess it also depends on your goals.

  • @TheBradTobin i had that problem, but then started back hyper extensions. yeah they're a pain in the ass to start, but once you have a routine of them the rest of my gym experience has been nothing but beneficial.

  • I used that ab coaster thing at the start, and trust me it works, Ive lost 4 inches off my stomach in like a month

  • @kiowchung and I bet you sell them on your website too. They are a crock

  • @DPMperformance nah I'm just some kid who goes a gym and found this has aided my fat goals, not just that alone, but has aided. the rest are crock though! any suggestions for fat loss off back and legs?

  • @DPMperformance lmao no kiddin

  • @kiowchung Spot reduction is a myth, its not the ab excercise that are going to cause you to lose inches.

  • if you train at planet fitness your rule of no machines wouldn't make sense to them lol

  • I LOVE IT!!! great, great video man. its funny and so true, i HATE leg extension machines, and bench press machines, and most of all the HORRIBLE smith machine. do a real military press, bench press, and squat. those are usefull exercises not this commercial be lazy and let cables lift your weight machines. free weights or go home

  • @neoi78 well said mate!

  • so the legg press is a useless machine? why is it taht jay cutler uses taht machine? is it cause he is a body builder you say and he is all show no go, ok then why is it that jay cutler can squat more than you ever will in your entire life?

Why does Dave Tate do it along with most power lifters? i guess all those elite level athletes must be idiots and you must be the genious.

  • @andrew7913 you are a space cadet Andrew. This post is for people looking to lose fat not people who want to chomp on the roids.

  • The video talks sense, whoever this smith is who invented the smith machine should be shot all it leads to is people, squatting, benching, miltary pressing or whatever else with far too much weight and terrible form, nice video only thing I have a problem with is that you're trying to sell to people fitness shouldn't be sold the best advice is always free because it's truthful.

  • @slipjim you had me until you said you had a problem with me 'selling fitness'.

I don't sell fitness. I help people get the body that they've always wanted.

The only reason I have a business is because people can't do this themselves whether through lack of knowledge, motivation or whatever personal reason they have.

And as you will realise in this video - there is nothing to buy. Just education. People can then make their mind up if they want to follow on with me further.

  • @GeneticPurity you're missing the point of the video mate. Put it this way - if you have a ton of belly fat to lose you're gonna notice it a hell of a lot more there then you will anywhere else

  • @DPMperformance Given that you don't have body fat anywhere else, then that's obvious, a monkey can figure that one out, but no machine, or exercise someone does to lose body fat will specifically target their stomach. No matter what you say, you cannot spot reduce, and I wasn't directing it at you, I was directing it at the comments below.

  • Good vid man. Will subscribe. Can't stand gym heroes that use these things and think they get much accomplished. Good for building some muscle, not strength. Thanks.

  • @WillyMac99 cheers mate appreciate it!

  • Whether you use machines or free weights, it all depends on what you want to achieve with your training, and on your general fitness level, I think. Machines can be good for beginners in some respects, and even serious bodybuilders can use them to target specific muscle groups - or just to have a bit of variation in their routine. To say that you should avoid machines at all costs is overkill, in my opinion.

  • @SFT24 look at the title of this video = if you want to lose belly fat.

For fat loss machines are a waste of time because you can do so many more exercises that hit a lot more muscles in half the amount of time.

Beginners need to learn how to do things with their own bodyweight before they progress to anything else so I think they're useless for them too.

  • You can't just target belly fat. When you lose fat you don't lose it in places where you do your exercises. ex-(Crunches). Sure squats are the king but you still have to have variety. You have to mix in some isolation moves too. If you work hard on any machine or free weight movement you will work the muscle hard. And burn calories

  • @73Nateman sure you definitely need variety mate - no argument there. But I can't agree that you need isolation exercises. There's so much you can do multi-joint wise that I think it's a waste of time. Not all machines are created equally. Best stick to bodyweight and free weights for fat loss

  • Machines are for muscles, in my opinion, to lose belly fat you have to run...the only way and the faster one :D

  • @64GIO that's the old school way to lose fat. Best way to lose belly fat, or any fat, is to combine HIIT with free weights

  • @64GIO That's wrong.

  • Don't use any gym machines. They are a waste of time. Simple.

  • @erushkavich Bingo - got it in 1

  • Fat loss is not something that happens because one selects special exercises. All the exercises can do is burn a low-to-moderate amount of calories (tell your fans how long they would have to do cardio or weight training in order to burn 1 lb. of fat) and add muscle (which also increases metabolic rate). One's body fat level is primarily controlled through diet, not exercise. Most importantly, it's paramount to train at 100% intensity if you're hoping to burn calories in the gym.

  • Your sir are an idiot... Leg Press is the second best exercise for mass in the thighs. You can't just do squats and call that leg workout... you need leg extensions for deep contraction and leg presses too.

  • @Kronixification Read the title of the video you space cadet - Do NOT Ever Use These If You Want to Lose Belly Fat NOT put on muscle mass.

Before you criticise me read and listen to who my target market is.

Those exercises are a waste of time for fat loss

  • Although there are a couple things i dont agree with there is a lot of truth in this. Machines a lot of time are so specific that they only work one or 2 specific muscle groups and don't actually give you a well rounded work out. They are good for toning and auxiliary lifting but if you wanna be strong the foundation of your workout should be squat bench and clean.

  • no cross trainer?

  • @Fosterscloseclan no cross trainer is too easy for people. They don't work hard enough on it.

  • Tell it how it is mate! ;-)

  • cheers Mark!

  • Awesome videos mate, love what your doing.

  • cheers for that - enjoy the vids and stay away from those dodgy machines!

  • no worries - make the most of your time in the gym!

  • Some of those machines I don't have even have in my jeans here in the States... So no worries there!
