  • My Favorite Symphony's last Movement. Cosmic!!!

  • @amkoraiem nope, Solti and Chicago are the best.

  • Excellent Orchestra!!! Great sound that's extremely blended and well together. I loved every second of it! Bravo!!!

  • That's one complicated-ass horn at 3:47. Any idea what horn that is?

  • @TheKevinV08 pretty normal french horn

  • This is actually the first time I've heard vibrato on a trumpet part

  • this conductor looks stoned in at the start rofl

  • Bernstein got it better, IMO.

  • @colegioesperanca

Would like some explanation.. I have never really liked Bernsteins interpretations of russian music. To this performance I have nothing bad to say.

  • このビデオをありがとう!! i'm from Finland.... I just can say how to tell my feelings... i just have one word in my mind for this song... Amazing!!

  • i find this man very charismatic!

  • at 2:30 the trumpet shouldn't vibrato. Russian symphonies were meant to be played with out vibrato.

  • That is right. I think so too.

  • So you mean not like Russian trumpeters then?

  • @matthewh2012 not really...its all about taste. the only thing that is "meant" to be played when a piece is composed is the correct notes and rhythms, and thats about it. the rest is personal preference, like tempo, overall tone and feeling, etc.

  • @matthewh2012 My first instinct is to agree with your comment about the trumpet vibrato at 2:30. But upon reflection that brief vibrato makes a certain amount of sense. Some compromises must have been made with the 4th movement. So, why not throw in a hint of individualism? Like a lone jazz trumpeter seizing for himself a few bars of unforced bliss in the eye of a collectivized hurricane while everyone else is forced to mutter "Our Business is Rejoicing."

  • Täpsus on küll super. Hästi kütavad. Paavo Järvi on ikka tubli mees

  • yea kind of a slow intro

  • this performance is AMAZING!

  • Opening tempo was a bit too slow for my taste.

  • Very nice!!!

  • No entiendo que más intensidad que esto necesitan... un verdadero enigma la mente de los críticos de youtube...

  • I saw Jarvi conduct this with the Cincinnati Symphony a few years ago and was simply amazed. He was brilliant, and the CSO had such power. He has brought Cincinnati's symphony to a new level!

  • When the Trumept is not soloing, seems fine....but when he play solo......all his power gone....

  • hes not loud enoiugh but his sound qualty is fine

  • Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic are the best.

  • Absolutley :)

  • @SchilkeLoyalist I do not agree, I love this version

  • @SchilkeLoyalist Heck yeah they are! Bought the performance on DVD and I never got bored of it.

  • @SchilkeLoyalist Oh please. The only aspect in which Bernstein would have something on Jaervi's version is in a whiskey chugging contest.

  • @SchilkeLoyalist New York My Ass.. Berlin is the best! :D

  • Technically flawless, but I don't think the intensity was there as much. Just a personal opinion though.

  • @zattacks I agree very much.

  • Good version but Georg Solti and Mravinski do it better.

  • compared to the great tone and drive of this finale, the entry of the solo trumpet sounds a little short of power and not very steady, but all in all is a great rendition of the movement, particularly the string phrasing and its precision. When it comes to the peroration strings-horns before the recapitulation they paint a very desolate landscape, until the harp puts the nightmare to an end

  • "answer of a musician to a justified critics", thus defined Shostakovich this symphony, which became a problem with the terrible stalisnistic regime, which pointed him out as a classic formalist, enemy of people

  • Wow. I live in Chicago, US, and I've always thought the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to be the best... But, this is the BEST performance I've heard of this symphony (and it's on youtube video!!!).

    Easily a 10 out of 10. Amazing.

  • ok everyone who is better Jarvi or Bernstein

  • Bernstein!!! Absolutley!!!

  • Both equally good. I like the sheer excitement of hearing the clean execution and technicality of te NHK symphony. I also like Jarvi's tempi.

  • Järvi is good but Bernstein is a legend!

  • I think it's a very good version

  • I agree.

  • it feels sort of rushed as some parts. not my personal favourite interpretation, but still a very amazing performance

  • I agree, I loves fast versions of this... Mravinski is the best !

  • Sensacional!

  • Mvrinsky was the one to premiere the piece and worked closely with Shostakovich. He does the end slow. Bernstein also conducted it for Shostakovich and he does the end fast. Shostakovich liked both.

  • playing this tomorrow with the University of Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra. Can't wait. So tough on the face though.

  • And I'm gonna come see it! Looking forward to it!

  • Woodwinds section, all men O.o

  • Pretty nice, although I thought the intro was a bit slow

  • I LOVE this piece... and the i love when the conductor makes it seem as though he or she is having fun.

  • Playing this in band, can't get enough of it

  • I love this piece!!! It's amazing!!

  • I recently discover this Conductor and I found him amazingly good. He'll become the new Gardiner...

  • Amazing performance, I just felt that the brass was a little 'static' at the beginning...

  • Comment removed

  • Paavo is simply AMAZING! Bravo!

  • great sounding orchestra. Anyone know what make of horn the principal is playing?

  • To me it looks like an Alexander 309

  • This is pretty much the only version i've heard that really nails it other than Haitink. Strange how Bernstein is usually so dull yet when he did it he seemed to miss the 'non troppo' part

  • I played this momevment at the University of Sewanne. it was so much fun. the cello part is quite strenuous.

  • I'm so pumped. I received the cello part in the mail today. I'm playing with my High School district's Honors Orchestra. The cello part looks so damn fun!

  • Going to see this on Saturday night done by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, also Brahms' 1st Piano Concerto. If it's 80% as good as this, it'll be a good night.

  • Me agradaria que al presentar el tema hubiese puesto más Brío, no expresa la fuerza que debe ser, Bernstein la interpreta de una manera maravillosa.

  • scrumptious

  • Fabulous. Just on Saturday night, I attended a performance of Shosty's 5th by the Milwaukee Symphony (who also played Liszt's Les Preludes and Mendelssohns 1st Piano Concerto with Arnaldo Cohen). In my opinion it was better than this by only a sliver of talent (and I mean sliver). They even played the 3rd and final movements together with only a two second interval. The ending was amazing.

  • this is very russian... i mean a lot of people say it was inspired by mahler's works but i still feel an independent shostakovich here

  • In this movement, I agree with you. I don't hear all too much Mahler here. More so in the second movement (where I also also hear echoes of Tchaikovsky). My guess (without having read or confirmed it anywhere) is that Shostakovich sometimes borrowed manners of expression when it suited his purposes.

  • I meant to reply to vikramkrishnan's comment below...

  • gran orquesta,chinito ser buenisimo,grande jarvi san,jajajaja,chu

  • Beginning is way to slow for my tastes.

  • They may not have been able to get the har run at :35

  • ditto.

  • this is what mravinsky, rostropovich, svetlanov and all the great masters did.

  • nice performance :-)

  • The trumpet solo should be more agitato!!! That part at 2:29 makes me think of swarm of bees the way the strings have those fast moving notes and the trumpet solo that sits on top is suppose to show that the bees are upset and agitated and after someone. (Like a group of Soviets coming to sting Stalin)

  • I like the way how u interperate it. But neither ways is wrong. Exciting is what i can say. Wonderful performance.

  • I thought it was a fairly good interpretation. I would say less vibrato.

  • Yea, less vibrato

  • We just got done playing a bruckner symphony and we brought in euphonium players for the wagnerian tuba parts, and we could NOT get the guy playing 5th horn to play without vibrato. He was playing everything like a freaking solo. It was annoying

  • more! more vibrato! more Russian heavily romanticised wobbliness.

  • i like that horn solo. and especially how he uses his fingers so delicately with every note lol sounded nice

  • in some way... not quite sure what is it i disagree with the trumep sound during his big solo.... the sound is great but the vabrato has something i dont like in it

  • yeah... I think the solo should be more of a french accent/marcato. I like it that way better than the way he played it here. He just kept the pitch and vibrated too much... But the Horn solo I like! Just that he's cheating with the F-alto side on the triple... heheh. but you do what you gotta do.

  • yep. You right. Too much vibrato.

  • Paavo is great! he brings out everything so clearly..

  • espesially the brass

  • So greaaaaaat !

    Shostakovich'symphony n.5 is so beautiful !

  • thank you for posting!

Would love to see more Paavo Jarvi videos

  • My channel has it a lot.

Please look at it if all right.
