@matthewh2012 not really...its all about taste. the only thing that is "meant" to be played when a piece is composed is the correct notes and rhythms, and thats about it. the rest is personal preference, like tempo, overall tone and feeling, etc.
@matthewh2012 My first instinct is to agree with your comment about the trumpet vibrato at 2:30. But upon reflection that brief vibrato makes a certain amount of sense. Some compromises must have been made with the 4th movement. So, why not throw in a hint of individualism? Like a lone jazz trumpeter seizing for himself a few bars of unforced bliss in the eye of a collectivized hurricane while everyone else is forced to mutter "Our Business is Rejoicing."
I saw Jarvi conduct this with the Cincinnati Symphony a few years ago and was simply amazed. He was brilliant, and the CSO had such power. He has brought Cincinnati's symphony to a new level!
compared to the great tone and drive of this finale, the entry of the solo trumpet sounds a little short of power and not very steady, but all in all is a great rendition of the movement, particularly the string phrasing and its precision. When it comes to the peroration strings-horns before the recapitulation they paint a very desolate landscape, until the harp puts the nightmare to an end
"answer of a musician to a justified critics", thus defined Shostakovich this symphony, which became a problem with the terrible stalisnistic regime, which pointed him out as a classic formalist, enemy of people
Wow. I live in Chicago, US, and I've always thought the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to be the best... But, this is the BEST performance I've heard of this symphony (and it's on youtube video!!!).
Mvrinsky was the one to premiere the piece and worked closely with Shostakovich. He does the end slow. Bernstein also conducted it for Shostakovich and he does the end fast. Shostakovich liked both.
This is pretty much the only version i've heard that really nails it other than Haitink. Strange how Bernstein is usually so dull yet when he did it he seemed to miss the 'non troppo' part
I'm so pumped. I received the cello part in the mail today. I'm playing with my High School district's Honors Orchestra. The cello part looks so damn fun!
Going to see this on Saturday night done by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, also Brahms' 1st Piano Concerto. If it's 80% as good as this, it'll be a good night.
Fabulous. Just on Saturday night, I attended a performance of Shosty's 5th by the Milwaukee Symphony (who also played Liszt's Les Preludes and Mendelssohns 1st Piano Concerto with Arnaldo Cohen). In my opinion it was better than this by only a sliver of talent (and I mean sliver). They even played the 3rd and final movements together with only a two second interval. The ending was amazing.
In this movement, I agree with you. I don't hear all too much Mahler here. More so in the second movement (where I also also hear echoes of Tchaikovsky). My guess (without having read or confirmed it anywhere) is that Shostakovich sometimes borrowed manners of expression when it suited his purposes.
The trumpet solo should be more agitato!!! That part at 2:29 makes me think of swarm of bees the way the strings have those fast moving notes and the trumpet solo that sits on top is suppose to show that the bees are upset and agitated and after someone. (Like a group of Soviets coming to sting Stalin)
We just got done playing a bruckner symphony and we brought in euphonium players for the wagnerian tuba parts, and we could NOT get the guy playing 5th horn to play without vibrato. He was playing everything like a freaking solo. It was annoying
in some way... not quite sure what is it i disagree with the trumep sound during his big solo.... the sound is great but the vabrato has something i dont like in it
yeah... I think the solo should be more of a french accent/marcato. I like it that way better than the way he played it here. He just kept the pitch and vibrated too much... But the Horn solo I like! Just that he's cheating with the F-alto side on the triple... heheh. but you do what you gotta do.
My Favorite Symphony's last Movement. Cosmic!!!

at 2:30 the trumpet shouldn't vibrato. Russian symphonies were meant to be played with out vibrato.

That is right. I think so too.
