I recently realized the meaning of this song. Owen Pallett, obviously by the name of his project and some of his songs, is a video game and fantasy nerd. You can think of as a love song for Link of The Legend of Zelda. Owen is homosexual, so romantic love of the male protagonists of his own favorite games and novels is possible. They're his only friends that don't betray him, and they help him in times of need, though he despairs at their inability to truly love him back. It's beautiful.

i recognize this art style from the actual FinalFantasy artists. look up some of the earlier final fantasy releases and they should have art like that.

Yeah, it really looks like the work of Yoshitaka Amano (who still does most of the concept art for the Final Fantasy series as well as the illustations for the Vampire Hunter D books).
