Wow! Someone really broke this lady's heart and you can hear it in the words (You were the 1 sure thing but now I see what you've become) and the guitar is painfully haunting, weeping in the melody. There are remnants of Delores O'riordan and Sheryl Crow in her voice, Wendy Melvoin in her guitar and Jill Sobule in her mastery songwriting skills as this is a piece that gets stuck in your head and you can't deny how it hits you. It's the voices that you DON"T hear that matter most in music. Epic.
I wish i could have this version on my ipod, this is just amazing, originally heard this on buffy as a kid, carried this song around for ages loving it,one day look it up on youtube to find this, and now what i never thought possible, i like it that much more.
Jonatha just played at Squam (where she was teaching a songwriting workshop). She is so so talented. As for the tunings, she said she uses things like 1/2 capos and special tunings because she was self taught.
I first heard of Jonatha when she was in The Story and I found it so hard to reproduce her guitar chords when playing along. Then someone told me she has her own tunings, and not the usual drop-d, or open G, either. Has she ever talked about her guitar tunings?
Jonatha has always been known for her unique guitar tunings. Its one of the reasons its so hard to reproduce her 'sound.' Has she ever talked about her guitar tunings? Her work with The Story is desert island stuff- straight up!
This song just rips my heart out every time I hear it. Like no other song can. Beautiful and heartfelt, those chords, that melody, the lyrics... all pointed right at your heart. What a true artist! Love you, Jonatha!
This song has always been one of my favorites of hers from Plumb. Hearing this version captures the same spirit and emotion but even more pure because this is how she wrote it with just guitar. Jonatha is something else - wonderful harmonies too. I've also had the joy of speaking with her as some of the others here and she is the real deal. Right on Jonatha.
Wow, wow, wow... In this stripped-down cable access gig, she just shines. They both do.
What she's doing technically--dynamics, coloration, and more--along with the emotional content is so difficult. She makes it look effortless. She's one of the greatest ever. Plus she writes and beautifully plays these amazing songs...
*sigh*
TJMatty-- Is there a DVD release of the Sonic Sessions available anywhere? I'd love to have all the songs she did, but this one... definitely.
Ah, with the AMAZING Ingrid Graudins on accompanying vocals. Ingrid and Jonatha sang the most gorgeous harmonies I have EVER heard. Ann-Marie Milazzo was amazing too. Jonatha's crew is the cream of the crop. Goffrey Moore is a guitar GAWD.
Thank you for posting! I love this album, she has such a wonderful clarity to her voice...beautiful song. I've never seen her live, so I appreciate this.

Did the first chord of this song remind anyone else of "Uninvited" by Alanis Morissette?

She was a trained dancer (ballet) before her singing career. I believe it was Milos Forman who discovered her, but I'm not sure.

She shares a lot of her tunings on her website. Go to her website and click on Music and then click on odds and ends.

She's so incredibly talented... plays the piano, the guitar and sings so beautifully. The lady singing with her has a wonderful voice also.
