As a music teacher, there are few things I love more than kids who are honestly into their performance. Kudos to you for bringing the music to them. Teaching the musical skills you needed to teach with the music they wanted to sing. You CAN find pop music with positive messages that are appropriate for any age group.

I second the person a year ago that said it would be neat to see these kids grown up perform this again.
