Great video, thanks for giving me some ideas. I've had one of these beauties for three or four years but not really spent enough time experimenting with it.
One thing I was wondering..what would be a suitable pedal to get for it, to control the VCO and VCF? The manual states a Roland FV-1 but I was wondering if a Boss 500 would be ok..would it need to be High or Low impedance? Any help greatly appreciated.
@REFaust Yikes, I wish I could help you, but I'm not sure! I'd be inclined to think that any cv pedal would work, but I haven't tried! Any one else have an idea?
@Tokyohunter Thank you very much! Wow, I think it would take a large series of videos to document the sound and functionality of the Andromeda! I am curious about it, as well.
@AutomaticGainsay Oh please do a demo of the Andromeda...there are so many Modulation possibilities to talk about...nobody on Youtube has covered it yet!!
Why are you worried about oscillator stability? I have never played an analog synth that wouldn't make it through at LEAST a song... most hold tuning for hours. Like a guitar. Guitarists seem to do okay, no? You have filter and pitch control, but no Gate.
At times it sounds a lot like my old System 100. Of course it is quite different, but I believe it odes have a lot of the same components... and the same green and black paint job :)
Is this the synth Steve Miller used on "Fly like an eagle"? I can't find any info on the web, just that it was a Roland and this one would have been contemporary when he recorded it. Any ideas?
true but i like the other lfo settings even more. hey marc person, do u keep the keyboads that u demo or do u sell them when ur done. becuse im willin to buy some. Im in a band and in a one man band. I have a keyboard with some moog, roland, and wersi settings, but i like the real thing.
The sample and hold sounds akin to the first arpeggiators. I was really impressed with the modulation control one has with the SandH. How much are these fetching on the market? I've not seen one on ebay.
As far as what it's good for musically. One word. BASS. Some people might disagree but the pseudo oscillators really give you a FAT sound. You're basically just layering waves on waves, although they're octaves apart they are essentially detuned. So you can have fat saw tooth trancey type leads or funk basslines.
I'd probably say the filter is a lil shy of fantastic, not as nice as my juno 60. But it gets the job done.
hey you seem like the right person to ask i want to buy a synth but i want to know from you which synth do you recommend for newb like me?..btw i love you vids thanks
That very much depends on what sort of music you're interested in making, how much money you're interested in spending, and how you intend to use the synth!
I love this synth. How much does it cost?

can you use the sh-3's as a effects processor for external sound sources like the SH-2?

This is another great demo.
everything explained cleared and you get to taste the distinct palette of sounds of the synth.
Hope you get to demo an Alesis Andromeda and a Prophet 08, can't find many demos as detailed as this on those synths.

Just a heads up that an Ebayer is referencing a link to your video to sell his SH ... 120361892122.

1: how stable is the oscillator? 2: are there any CV in/out jacks on the back?

@AutomaticGainsay No gate? One can't sequence this without mods?

Why would you want to sequence it? ; )

Because I'm a crap player, natch ;)

Yes, with a waveform driving the S&H instead of the standard noise source, it can create strangely melodic outcomes!
I bought this one for roughly $500 in about 2003, but when I sold it on eBay last year, it only ran in the $400 range... so I'm not sure.

I actually bought one of these last week. It's amazing how much option for sonic modulation the crazy roland engineers crammed into this synth.
It really seems to have scope for unlimitd combination of parameters.

Thanks for the demo! Entertaining, educational, and synth-o-riffic as usual. :)
