@covermaiden This is from the DVD Score, where Dream Theater played to a sold out Radio City Music Hall for the final show of their Octavarium world tour. Released in 2006
You're both mental...Ruddess and Moore are both incredible musicians, with unique aspects contributing to DTs overall sound...Now shut up and quit licking each others balls!
@Dolf9271986 Technique-wise yes. But music is more than techniqe. Kevin is still a great keyboardist and has a much better feel, especially with Dream Theater. Rudess licks his balls in this department.
Just phenomenal. This is truly a testament to the skill and musical genius that is Dream Theater. It's too bad Portnoy split, but when they were together, it was something to behold. John Petrucci FTW!
Man this version is awesome. I just cannot withstand LaBrie's vocals. Perhaps the problem is with me, since the guy has a lot of technique and musical formation, but I simply think his tone and vocalisation are awful, I mean, that makes him a great singer, technically, but he is definitely not pleasant to my ears, at all.
@andretribuzymetal I can understand where you're coming from though. There are a lot of good singers I think are horrid and there are a lot of bad singers I think are great. I don't think technical skill and lots of training means they're going to be appreciable to your ears, Despite having no guitar lessons and being unable to read sheet music, Lindsey Buckingham is one of my favorite musicians, period.
I don't understand... why was James so fucking good at that performance (his high notes were there, he had good vowel formation, and was in tune all the time), and yet in all other cases in the last several years, his live performance has been less than amazing? BTW, what most people hear when he hits those notes that really squack at you and make you cringe is usually a combination of bad tuning and very poor vowel placement that results in him trying to reach notes now too high for his voice.
@PreyingMantisMan Well he certainly has his share of problems live nowadays. But I remember him being totally awesome throughout the entire Octavarium World Tour (which this is from").
@bunnyannihilator89 ofcourse, but don't you agree that the melodies on the vocals are totally cliche? I'm not saying he's not a very talented singer, which ofcourse, he is, but his voice just strikes me as kind of.. silly.. IMO ;P
really. james is such a good singer. offcourse he drops some notes when they play live but i think there arent that much singers who can perform that way live (accept maybe fot queensryche, but thats much easier to sing annyway:P)
@queenguy1 Check out Russel Allen from Symphony X. Not so muck live footage probably have to listen to there live cd to get a real indication. He sings everything and i mean everything completely spot on, and his parts are atleast as complex as DT (and i mean early DT) if not more so.
@cabijista1 i saw symphony X live and although i agree that his singing is really complecated to, its not to compare with james because in symhony x you dont get a lot of that high notes that DT has
These guy are real artist real musicians i would laugh at anyone that tries comparing someone like justin bieber or even god forbid the horride Kurt Cobain with James...
IMO, this song contains one of Petrucci's best, if not the greatest, solo he's ever done. It's has just about everything you could incorportate in it: Harmonics, Fast Runs, Sweeps, tapping, expressional string bending, whammy bar tricks.... it's just beyond perfect.
there's so many great drummer's who are more skilled and talented than Portnoy, maybe thanks to him because he shared all his idea to everyone but i'm still believed this band can still stand alone without him but when Petrucci leaves the band the time is over Dream Theater will no longer active on stage!
@ZachValkyrie How come? The only things I know anything about mixing are drums, so I can't really tell what is specifically wrong with this mix. Upon critical listening it sounds like the guitar needs to be more prominent in the mix (particularly during the solo) and I think it doesn't sit well in the mix with the bass guitar. I also think the snare needs more "pop" and less crack" and the kicks need more beater click for clarity on the double bass parts. Is this what's wrong or is there more?
I also didn't have enough room to say this in my last post, so I'll say it here. Since I have a decent idea of mixing drums for the most part I have to add in that besides needing more beater click, the 22" kicks here need a tad less low end because if you listen to just the drum mix on the DVD, they distort somewhat. Also, the big bass (26"?) needs more lows, and the 18" floor tom has almost as much low end as the 22" kicks so that might need a hair of reduction.
@GamingDrummer89 Almost forgot....to hear the 18" floor tom and the giant kick drum you'll need to listen to "The root of all evil" on this DVD. And that 18" floor tom looks like it has an Audix D6 on it.
@ZachValkyrie Lol, I can only mix drums well. I've done live mixing at church before and even though I can listen and say what needs to be turned up and down and what needs more lows or mids or highs, I'm not proficient at actually mixing anything except drums. Most of my experience mixing drums is in church (in other words, live). If you put the demo up here on youtube, I can give pretty good advice on drums, but guitars and everything else I can't do that well, haha.
@ZachValkyrie Just check around on the internet for guitar stuff (specifically here on youtube because there is bound to be plenty of stuff on here). Even before I hear a demo, however, I can tell you about frequencies and such and what they do to drums and you might even be able to go off of that for yourself. I'll send you a private message with that info because it would take more than 10 comment posts to fit all the info in, lol.
It's nice to hear James fully back from the throat problems. He's just completely on point here. There are some versions of this song running around on Y/T from around 96 where he's not even on pitch, never mind delivering properly....
