Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, and Paris at the Winterland Arena, I remember this concert well. At the end of the show there were drug od's all over the arena floor. Paris was absolutely the worst band I have ever seen. For all you Skynyrd fans they were in top form that night and the entire concert is available in MP3 format at Wolfgang's Vault.
Great stuff! It was always hard finding bootleg stuff from these guys and I could never figure out why. While their studio stuff was great, their live dynamics were a lot more laid back and loose and when they revved it up, they were like an engine pinning the tack. The ebb and flow of their live performances was so much more prominent without the overdubs and wizardry of the engineers on their official live releases that the only true experience comes from the bootlegs no matter how they sound.
I could look at this everyday for the rest of my life. These guys were the best ever especially being so young and writing all the killer songs that people still listen to today. RIP RVZ!!!!!
Damn...Allen Collins, what a total badass. So tragic how his last years went down, he was the best of all the Skynyrd guitarists, in my opinion. Unfortunate how he gets kinda overlooked when people talk about guitar greats.
@JustAintthatWay i have to add on tho that im not a guitarist just have listened to and watched ls since 1975 and my opinion is just that - an opinion
harwood's stuff shines all over the place on allen
@JustAintthatWay Yeh, you broke down all their strengths pretty well, man, good ear! Allen brought the fire into their sound, Gary brought the slow, bendy melodic end. Ed and Steve were definitely the most technically adept players, but there is something about Allen and Gary's playing that I've always liked better. Particularly the way they did double leads so tight!!
I agree, Barry Harwood was a total badass!!! He kinda stepped into the Ed/Steve spot on those RCB records, and it worked well
stay away from the needle boy , it'll do you wrong, this trips been 50 days as of today , cocaine and heroin, lots of trips to the moon, speedballs at times even, must have a death wish if ya ask me
ive been feeling so sick inside
the demon came to him and said you know im gonna win
@BeBopDeluxe85 Be Bop, you are so right, I look back on these old tracks, and think my gosh, we were in the company of greatness...that little spider monkey Al, he could sure rip..what a treasure...never get tired of this.
all I meant to say was that lynyrd skynyrd got the break and they paid the dues, No magic here, the Idea was expressed well, you find this song on the radio? lol not
Well I don't think that Allen Collins was Jesus Christ, and niether is Ronnie Vansant with Gary Rossington. Abuse of talent Eric Clapton wrote in his song about his abuse of power. Become humble. God bless you
Ode to Ronnie Van Zant January 15, 1948 - October 20, 1977 The question's been answered We still remember you For now, you're immortal One of everlasting few Lord, He took you too early A tragedy in the skies Laughs turned to tears All we could say was - why? We remember you, Free Bird For that, you can't deny Always love you, Free Bird What you gave will never die
Nice video clip of them back in the day. I like how LS were writing songs about the dangers of drugs & hard liquor back when it was being promoted as part of the counterculture. Thanks for posting this!
Part of the legend I suppose, a lot of stuff that's beyond our control. It would be cool for someone to come out with a cover of this song and maybe That Smell to introduce them to a new generation.
What can you say? This is a great song and great posting. I am glad that Ronnie's legacy of live music can be preserved like this and be available for all to see!! Thank you!!
He was in Skynyrd from 72 to 75. I read he was just tired of all the touring and craziness. I wouldn't be surprised if it was some drugs. He got in an argument with Ronnie and Ronnie told him he wasn't worth a pimple on Allen Collins arse. He quit right after that. They hired Steve Gaines in 76. There's good info on Ed King and Skynyrd at Wikipedia.
The Steve Gaines stuff is great, although to me that was when they got a little bit more commercial or maybe the word is polished. I think I like the 72-75 stuff better with Ed...?
JUST BECAUSE ED WAS NOT THE HUNK OF THE MONTH DOES NOT REMOVE HIM FROM BEING ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME

@thatJCguy ac was the 'rock star' of ls we loved him fb makes him eternal
id bet at least half of skynyrd fans would vote him their fave too
but he was not the best guitarist in that band and i aint being disrespectful saying that
gaines was best at picking gary at melodic leads ed on 'bama is classic speaks for itself
allen brought heart style & energy to the mix - important ingredients
best overall tho was barry lee harwood played on albums but didnt tour
peace
