Perhaps, at the time, "In The Air Tonight" seemed to simple for a Genesis song, but in hindsight, with it's dark atmosphere, it would've fit right in - like "Mama."
Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe.
It took me a looooooooong time to get into this album. But I saw its greatness eventually. Some amazing songs on it (mostly Tony's for me, I have to say). Still it contains what is probably my least favourite Genesis song.
uh phil....beach boys? joe walsh? try ripping off sly and the fam's hot fun in the summertime!!! subconscious can work in strange ways!! still a classic though
duke always had a cheapness about it which was mainly due to the cover and the fact that it had no song on it that i really loved, -- many years later i began to love behind the lines very much, also duchess and of course duke´s travels, but it is still my least favourite, not talking about invisible touch or we cat dance of course - to me genesis lost it after 1984
@JohnyVirgil No, it's sad because you actually believe that Duke is the last decent Genesis record. In fact, it worries me that you can't understand the perfection of HOME BY THE SEA. Or fucking DOMINO.
Also, I find it sad that you see pop songs as "formuliac". Music is music. It should be listened to, not fussed over like all the elitist Genesis snobs like you do. I for one am I proud to be into such a wide range of music, not glued to one style of it.
@ThroughRock Wow! I cant believe after two comments on a thread you've got my taste in music pegged. I guarantee I'm not your standard "elitist Genesis snob", if such a thing truly exists. Maybe I'm a bit of a critic, but I promise, I'm not glued to anyone on style of music.
Also, I disagree with the notion that music is not meant to be given a closer look. It has to be interpreted, something to reflect on, just as with any piece of art. If you just take what's on the surface, you miss so much.
@ThroughRock Nice one! Like I've said before - its funny that some PG fans tend to be elitist music snobs. Some seem to ignore the fact that music would be very boring if it stayed with the same format. If Genesis had stuck with the prog format, they'd have died out long ago - which would be even more tragic from an all-era fan's point of view

Best Genesis Album. Very well balanced in the short popsongs - heavy long theme songs. Crystal clear sound. Awesome bombastic Concept album.

@koenenbw - He has a 'bassier' voice than the others, which makes it sound more mumbling than it is.

Nice! "Sail On Sailor" influenced "Misunderstanding". My 2 favorite bands EVER!
Beach Boys{1966-1974} and Genesis{1970-1982}.

@ThroughRock Yeah, it really is sad that I value ambition in music over formulaic pop songs. I don't know how I go to sleep at night.
