Anyone else notice the edit slip at 2:43 when Ed is playing the red and white striped axe instead of the black and white one he is playing during the rest of the song?
The growling intro at 0:22 still sends chills down my spine...and then continues with the opening chrunching "Bah Dub, da da da" to the 'mistake' at the opening verse. Simple awesome.
I first saw Van Halen in a small club in 1978. I have never seen a band that all members had incredible talents It was 1 + 1 + 1 +1 = 10. They were also the loudest band I have see to this date. The current VH is NOT the same without Michael Anthony.
This concert was even better then the video! Had 11th row for this night`--was VH at their best. I 1st saw VH on the 1980 WCF tour they were awsome then too but 81 wasVH at the top of their game. Each tour there after was not quite as good but still always loved them. Hated the day Roth left--saw 5150 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco and that was enough of Van Haggar for me. Some of the music with Sammy is very good but will never touch any of Roth's finest.
@SBBayArea82 YOU saw (the MIGHTY) VAN HALEN during THIS tour?! What venue did you see them at? Who opened for them-or did they open for someone? During THIS performance (of Unchained), I LOVE watching DLR doing the splits off the drum platform accompanied by his trademark "scream!"
@AngelofAnguish VH played 3 nights in Oakland Ca this tour. The 1st night me and 3 buds had 11th row there was video cameras from beginning to finish. I can't recall who the opening act was this tour, it's possible we didn't even watch the 1st band. The 2nd night I went with 3 gals had upper seats--those days in Oakland were reserved seating. They were just as good the 2nd night if not better then the 1st. Contrary to what some believe there wasn't video taken that night.
I noticed him going into the verse prematurely as well, that's hilarious stuff. Being a former guitarist/musician, mistakes happen and how you deal with them is the difference between a bad night and a great night. Eddie kept plugging away, changed back to the opening and got on track, grinning the whole time.
@peartfaldo yes there are many many rumors and fans have been asking for Oakland 81 for years. IT JUST MIGHT BE TIME TO RALLY TOGETHER AND ASK FOR THIS DVD FROM THE POWERS THAT BE.
When Van Halen held a press conference in 2007 to announce the tour with Dave and introduced Wolf. Dave was clear to point out it wasn't a reunion. He said it was a new band . I loved the classic VH with Mike. But people need to get over the fact that MA isn't in the band anymore and quit thinking of 2012 VH as a reunion.
@asclarice Maybe three Van Halens and a Dave. Tres VH uno DLR. It's a very unique opportunity for father brother/uncle son/nephew to be playing together. Mike will always be a part of Van Halen no way you can just write off all the years of his contribution to almost everything they ever recorded. They are like Deep Purple mach 1 mach 2 e.t.c. only getting rid of Mike was lame. Wolf is the only justifiable replacement. Eddie and him will be doing some amazing things together hopefully.
Unchained, So this is love and hear about it later are the only 3 songs that exist from this live recording, unfortunately. 3 best videos ever aired on MTV.
I agree 100% with TheSkydogsguitar, i saw them in 81, 82, and 84 and it was a f***in block party with 16,000 of your closest friends!!! Can't wait to see them May 19th in St Paul!
If you did not see Van Halen live in the early 80's, you have no idea how great a concert they put on. It was like a block party with 16,000 of your closest friends....
I never could understand all the Roth this and Hagar that. Van Halen is FUCKING VAN HALEN!! There is not a pussy crybaby band today that even comes close. Van Halen means good times and one hell of a party.
They covered their mistake during the intro really well..........Ed went into the single stringing too early...back to intro riff...back to single stringin
@diagreen Mike was not originally even planned to be on the 2004 tour with the band and had to agree to be paid less. This was because the boys were not making music and Sammy was. Sammy asked Mike to play with him but Ed didn't appreciate this and with time this became standard practice. What broke the straw on the camel's back on the 2004 tour when Mike began promoting his own brand of hot sauce on radio stations across the US wherever they in town for a show.
@sonicoclv55 shit.really????thats just crazy.i guess the bottom line is always the bottom line.all those years together didn't mean much.thats the world of VH i guess.thanx for the info
@nyshortline In my opinion, like a lot of other rock/metal singers, I think THAT'S what makes the "vintage" Van Halen music fantastic and what sets THEM apart from other artists-a vocalist who's not really "cut out to sing" combined with top notch guitar, bass, and drum, playing!
@xramcam In my opinion, David Lee Roth even annihilates (the late) Kurt Cobain-and look what a "big deal" the media made about HIM ("him" meaning Cobain).
Didnt realize how great of performer Roth was then. I seen them in 1978 and they were backup to The Doobie Brothers and another new band called Journey.
This Video Just Gave Me Chills Down My Spine,This Rock´s Big Time.It Also Features My Personal Favorite Frontman Of Van Halen"Diamond Dave Lee Roth"You Rock & You Still Rock.

@zumadude JULY 2nd 1981 I was 20 years old Milwaukee WI MECCA theatre 13th row center My ears are cstill ringing Van Halen was so powerful and in your face great times!!!! you are right it WAS totally awesome these newbs today dont know what they missed out on fo sure!!!! Im 51 now and still crank my VAN HALEN ALWAYS WILL!!! VAN HALEN ROCK ON!!!!!!
I used to set my VCR to record MTV from 1am-5am in hopes of catching any of the Fair Warning videos...I saw the very first show on the Fair Warning Tour... Vancouver Canada. plus Seattle and all three shows in Detroit over the 4th of July weekend. They were the Mighty Van Halen for a reason....
This song is already so badass, was it really neccessary for Alex to make it just that little more badass by smashing the crap out of a flaming gong?
@YogaArmy True he is missed. Despite Roth's Martial arts, Anthony was always the real tough guy as well, to me. A great and accurate player/vocalist.
@YogaArmy The reunion wouldn't have even happened if it weren't for Wolf. He's breathed new life into the band, and if you ask me is a better bassist than MA
Saw this tour. Michael Anthony will be hard to replace by Wolfy. Can't wait to see them in Nashville 4/27. David Lee Roth looks as good as ever. That guy stays in shape.
listen to the bass riffs mike was playing at 3:49-3:51. mike was actually a great bassist and could've riffed out on a lotta stuff but played what was appropriate for the song. with ed, al and dave doing their things someone had to hold down the fort.
KILLER! A lot of people don't realize how shrill EVH's live tone is...so that it cuts the other frequencies....which is why we hear it clearly. Notice it really isn't a real saturated distortion as well.
@marc777danielle Well, that's only partly true, I guess. I knew it had to be drop-D, but I googled it, and apparently it's a little lower than that even. It looks like Eddie (and, by extension, Mike) took every string down one half step BEFORE dropping the E string down to D. So in reality he's palm-muting ("chugging") a D-flat in the beginning there, which is three half-steps down from a standard E. I guess my ears aren't good enough to distinguish half-steps... :)
Also, I'm speaking of the studio version only; I'm not sure if he's doing the same thing live. Typically Eddie will pick up a different guitar that is pre-tuned to something else if the song requires it.
Man! I wish Micheal Anthony could have cut loose more!
Not only is Fair Warning their best album (in my opinion), I beleive it's because it's a "bottom -heavy"/bass dominant; lots of down-tuning; plus Micheal's playing was awesome. If the term "funky" could be applied in the context of Van Halen-metal material, Fair Warning is truly a funky-metal classic!
@henrysmom2 With his stage presense sure, just about anybody would agree to that. Vocally? Not even close. Hagar's vocal range is fantastic and Eddie himself has said Roth's vocals can't even compare to Hagar's.
yeah don kirscher had some serious shit on his show!1 i remember seeing sabbath play never say die !! it was epic!!!! i remember it like it was yesterday!!

Look, I have been influenced by and ripped off a LOT of guitarists over the years.
But Edward is the reason I play guitar. It was my love of his playing that pushed me over the edge.
How can I ever pay him back? He forced me into my favourite hobby. Thousands of hours... FUN hours... spent with a guitar in my hands because of this one man.
@sinaloapowerful1 With Sammy, they played so much tighter and the lead singer could actually remember the words. DLR gave it the flavor of 'party, rock, fuck it' type of attitude, kids like that. Watching these performances as a grown up, it isn't very good, but hey, it was freakin loud so who cared?
@revelation1965 i think my cousin (in toronto) was at that, he said it was great. i seen VH only once ever and it was in Toronto in 1998, was awesum :-)
@JBL8863 --- Sammy was never a "great rocker".......singing about the speed limit is pretty stupid if you ask me......watching Roth launch 10 feet into the air while Eddie is slamming away is where the magic happened.......listening to Sam croon about aliens and love is not magical at all
@JBL8863 ---- "Chickenfoot is way better than Van Halen"......LOL, that's some funny shit.......were you high when you wrote that? Chickenfoot will be touring to half-empty House of Blues gigs on their next tour.......Van Halen will be selling out 18,000-seat arenas
Anyone else notice the edit slip at 2:43 when Ed is playing the red and white striped axe instead of the black and white one he is playing during the rest of the song?

How can I ever pay him back? He forced me into my favourite hobby. Thousands of hours... FUN hours... spent with a guitar in my hands because of this one man.
I mean 'thank you' doesn't quite cover it.
I will forever be in his debt.
btw, check out Catherine... scary good

vh went to shit when dlr left
sinaloapowerful1 3 months ago
@sinaloapowerful1 With Sammy, they played so much tighter and the lead singer could actually remember the words. DLR gave it the flavor of 'party, rock, fuck it' type of attitude, kids like that. Watching these performances as a grown up, it isn't very good, but hey, it was freakin loud so who cared?

@JBL8863 --- It didnt really work when Sammy joined.....just a corporate love ballad band at that point.....the magic left with Diamond Roth

@JBL8863 --- Sammy was never a "great rocker".......singing about the speed limit is pretty stupid if you ask me......watching Roth launch 10 feet into the air while Eddie is slamming away is where the magic happened.......listening to Sam croon about aliens and love is not magical at all
Hunkola 4 months ago
@Hunkola Your right and I'm wrong...Dave is a god and Sammy isn't...I find it odd you use Dave's 30 year old photo as your profile picture...
Look at Dave today compaired to Sammy...Chicken foot is way better act than Van Hallen today...
JBL8863 4 months ago
@JBL8863 ---- "Chickenfoot is way better than Van Halen"......LOL, that's some funny shit.......were you high when you wrote that? Chickenfoot will be touring to half-empty House of Blues gigs on their next tour.......Van Halen will be selling out 18,000-seat arenas

This has always been one of my favorite videos because the way its filmed.
It looks like a live movie, and the sound is so raw. And i loved Eddie in those classis striped sox. Wished he wore those more than that tour.
