  • Christi! quit tellin me ta talk slower!

  • Id eat the fish in your tank. Just sayin.

  • lol..good to know that im not the only one who friends and neighbor think im crazy....if shtf i'll will have something :) good vid!

  • Tubs!!!

  • we got tubs!!!!!

  • i never knew you lived in a trailor?

  • I love the enthusiasm you have and the concept of this video, but if you were in a real emergency situation where canned goods couldn't hold you for a few months (while your plants grow) WHY would anyone still be in their apartment lol? At that point it would be every man for himself to fight for resources. If a disaster that bad hit what would you do for clean water for your plants?

Like I said..great concept, bad idea if that was a real emergency situation. Kudos though, on to ep 2 I go!

  • check out "window farming" for a different spin on small space food production.

  • Good information. Everyone should do what they can to grow a little food. Get a 6 pack of lettuce and plant them around the edge of a 12" pot.

  • nice video, but out here in south west Nebraska there is a bunch of land, so planting on low maintance roads is a great way to have a winter's supply of food,

beets works well, as for dtiches water is collected and holds it, yep weeds can be a problem and the farmers do have say you can, most will in shock that city folk will get their hands dirty. this also spread out your garden, so hail or disease can't get it, and low maintance roads don't get sprayed by the road guys.

    consider it

  • I think that's a good idea. And I don't think you talk too fast. That's normal speed for me. ;)

  • Um... is this guy's name Seth Galifianakis?

  • I see a fish you have in the background that you could also eat. hah

  • Are you voice talent for a Seth McFarlane animated show?

    (Thanks for the video, though!)

  • ?????????????????????????

  • i am one of the few people who understand your humor.

  • Wheatgrass and beansprouts can grow in low light. Bean sprouts can grow in a jar no soil needed youtube it, its very simple to do & grow in a few days. I'm looking into getting some halide lamps for indoor growing very soon for all year round veggies. Tomatoes, mini cucumbers, red peppers...etc. You can add a little sugar in the water to help the plants grow once in a while. Happy gardening Great vid!

  • i do it the other way around for my diet. greens for nutrition, fruit for energy, and avocado/nuts/coconut/durian/co conut oil for healthy fats instead of needing animals as my fat source... because face it, if there is a disaster with increased pollution you need your greens to help aid your body in removing toxins because they can build up. like they also do in animals, so animals might not be your best source of fats. also you should store some seaweeds

  • great post, pick the short plant types with fast harvesting -lettuces ,plants that harvst tops and bottems like turnips-the body needs fresh veggies when stressed big time !! morning sun is the best for growth and reflection of sunlight works if space is tricky to manage by useing foil on cardboard tipped to stream light to plants longer .grab your own sunlight too, vitaim D from sunlight just a 20min a day can inprove health-medi Herbs fresh are great also and fast growers

  • fertilizer that you would give your roses... or your dandelions. hahaha i dont know why, but the fertilizing dandelions part had me loling pretty good

  • @s13sr20det dandelions are edible so it wouldn't be a bad idea in a survival situation

  • There's no such thing as an empty calorie -- every calorie contains a calorie. duh.

  • you would be supprised how fast peoplelike this doucher are gunna go out when it comes down

  • my dd old toddler pool will be taking the place of the storage bin!!!

  • That's a good idea!

  • White Rice in food storage? Empty calories = wasted space. Brown rice is far superior nutritionally. White rice is about as nutritious as paper.

  • Why wouldnt we want to utilize our kitchen cabinets for our food storage? I dont have a problem with anyone that I would allow in my kitchen knowing I have food storage.

  • I was kinda thinking this too. All my neighbors would have as much or more food in their cupboards as I do. They also wouldn't care how much food I had. What do people put in their kitchen cabinets if not food? Other than that good vid. Too many people complain that they don't have enough space to grow food. This shows that it doesn't take much space if a person is willing to put the work into it.

  • very good and educational. What ever happened with your crops? Do you have a follow up vid?

  • great stuff with or without any disaster .

  • Man, you talk slow........

  • You might want to mention to drill a or poke a few holes in the bottom of your little garden. If not your crop and seeds are going to rot!!!! JMHO.

  • soul71 - thank you, but this has already been discussed.

  • @soul71 I used the exact same kind of tub myself and grow all sorts of vegetables in them, though instead of poking holes in them (you mean for drainage right?) I fill the bottom with stones and then pour soil on top. Works for me!

  • I've watched you for quite awhile and I must say your really getting good at making videos! This one is excellent!

  • we go this tub its not doing its just THERE

    lol

  • fish too in that tank

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ADDING THIS VIDEO!!!!!

I was asking about it for a while. This helps soo much.

  • Great ,this episodes are perfect in my situation here in a urban enviroment...Thank you Kevin!

  • Briiliant video!

  • Can't wait. Looking forward to episode 2 :)

  • I'd like to see some videos on hydroponic gardening as well.

  • Too late. I already converted a spare bedroom for storage. (Just a little pantry LOL). No tubs in there either. Promise not to show it to friends and neighbors!!! I wish I could plant anything this time of year. Hope to start a little greenhouse soon though.

  • Excellent idea. I think I'm gonna actually try that. Thanks Kev!

  • how long will rice last?

  • depends on if its going to get moist

  • Grains, if they are kept dry, last pretty much indefinitely.

  • @ 2:50 - Why do you have to wait to replant in the other sections? is it because of the nutrients for the other seeds that are growing, we should wait to plant the other 3rd of the container?

    newbie XD

  • 10teeleaf - if you plant everything at one time, it will all be ready to harvest at one time. Spreading out the planting time allows you to harvest the food over a period of time.

  • 5stars and excellent idea for a video. The garden vids of yours are my favorite.

  • No matter what you have, g men or gangs will take it from you.

better to know what wild plants can be used for food, medicine, and tools plus wild life plant weapons all around you

or go to donze52 to see life in McCook, NE

  • I'm using the same tub as a indoor garden for this winter. I set it up just beside the patio door

  • I'm gonna try it with my kid and see how things grow indoors over the winter with less light than the summer months.

Would I be correct to expect quicker growth in the summer months? I think so. Please advise.

    Thanks.

  • ROFL Kev. Did you drink too many cokes before this video?

    Great video though, great ideas.

  • rosrychaplet - link to the forum thread is in the video description

  • hahaha. its just.................THERE

  • great vid!

  • Those tubs are great for growing in for about 1 year. I used a few to house my seed starters over the past year. After about one season with UV exposure they become brittle and shatter. Good vid though Kevin! A year of production is a year of eating.

  • the tub doesn't seem to be deep enough for onions and such.

  • Kevin, you should mention that almost anything can be used to grow food in. The containers we have for storage are good for an emergency but I think it's important to have things already ready. Most bakeries give away 3 and 5 gal buckets that are great for container gardening.

  • nice hat funny and knowledgeable 5*

  • I think your talking speed is and was fine. Thanks again for all of the videos. Tubs under the bed:)

  • good project thanks

  • yeah remember to punch holes in the bottom for drainage or your plants will rot & die..grow u some greens, onions, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, alot u can grow on a patio or porch..just make sure there's plenty of sunlight hitting them..lettuces likes the cooler not quite direct sunlight I have found, but tomatoes like full sun & to avoid blight, water from the bottom & keep the leaves dry & splatter free..those self watering containers u get at walmarts work best if u tend to overwater like me.

  • Those sterlite tubs are attractive but that sterlite, Kev, after 2 yrs starts cracking all over the place and falling apart from the sunlight hitting it making it brittle..wish I could find some rubber tubs, everything is sterlite now...I've wasted a bunch of money on those for gardening..they are best used just for storage in the house unless u like buying them ev 2 yrs. Loved this video Kev, esp the part of your wife making u slow down..u do talk fast, lol..u crack me up! Thx for sharing!

  • cpnsider using them for composting

  • i do hydroponics garden in my closet growing tomatoes and herbs also i grow bean sprouts ina a jar

  • Don't forget drainage in that tub.

  • That's a good idea. Do seeds need to be planted a certain time of year? I'm a total noob with this plant stuff and I'm looking at making a small garden around my place. Probably in barrels and boxes since my yard is full of tree roots.

  • @BothKind, yes u want to germinate your seeds in the house or greenhouse about Feb to plant in March after last frost..cheap way I do it is I cut toilet rolls in half or kitchen rolls in 4 parts & putting potting mix/soil in them & plant your seeds keeping them moist & u can put them in a plastic bag to make them germinate faster, once they sprout remove covering..in spring place whole thing in soil or container or raised bed as the toilet roll biodegrades.

  • Someone's a little hyper :-)

  • i enjoy watching your videos because of how extreme you are, planing for all types of world disasters and pandemics, can i ask how you feel about marijuana? you should try it some time if you aren't already a regular user and grower.

  • or...eat that big ass fish in the background

  • I happen to live in just such an apartment with a small balcony. I have thought about this for some time. I am going to get my stuff together and do some video responses to show you the good works YOUR doing for us. I just have to figure out what I want to plant and when I should plant them.

    5/5

  • What a great idea. You can bring them in at night to keep people from stealing them in the middle of the night.

One questions: would you need to drill a drain hole in the bottom?

  • Very nice =)

  • You don't even have to have a disaster, this is just a great idea for any apartment dweller to both save money and have the benefit of healthy veggies

  • I have been experimenting with this very concept for a couple years, even though there are many vids and talk about "container gardening" most vegis will not produce much without room for the roots to spread out.

Radishes will grow in like 3 gal. buckets pretty good but most plants will just not develop well once the roots are bound up at the bottom of the container.

  • Kevin, you crack me up. This is a good video.

  • deputy dangle from reno 911? LOL

  • LMAO, looks a lot like him, anyways, great vid.

  • Assuming that you wouldn't want to poke holes in the bottom of the tubs, I'm wondering if that is going to present a drainage problem...little gravel/sand in the bottom maybe? Just wondering...

  • Comment removed

  • you're probably going to need to drill some holes in the bottom for water drainage. just a helpful recommendation.

  • Kevin you are funny in your OLD AGE beans sprouts can be eaten sooner and be mix in with a salad of anything else

  • That fish behind you looks like good eating lol

  • Great Video Man!

    Five Stars!!

  • your not going to survive off that....

  • cheese22092 - I guess you did not watch the video. Its clearly stated that is is supposed to supplement your food stocks with some kind of fresh veggie.

  • Hate to tell you but apartments are not great places to survive in. Your biggest danger lack of water and in most apartments proper water storage is not likely because space is at a premium. Have a motorcycle ready so you can leave town and carry your things have a trailer if you must but I can't see lasting longer than 3 weeks in an apartment. Services shut down when these types of disasters occur. Sewer water electricity rare. Learn wild plants you can eat catch minnows rats trap fish crabs.

  • cdltpx - water will be covered in another video. I already have that one planned out.

  • make some more gun/hunting videos.... review a treestand or something... no offence or anytinhg but this is boring

  • I like how those people in Pasedina Ca use every inch of their property to grow food. They have it all solar power biodiesel they even grow on the nuetral ground in front their house. I think they are vegans great for them but I feel the need to eat tasty critters. Goooooooooooooooo water. Thanks Kevin.

  • Cool.

Any ideas on what you'll be using the lids for?

  • you need to black out the sides, light is bad for the rhizosphere (roots system), but that is a GREAT idea.

  • Good idea 5/5*

  • Cool Like an indoor square foot garden only mini. I love your videos. I never miss thanks for all the good ideas. Nikki in Ponchatoula

  • wonderful idea!! we need more urban survival info on the internet to keep all those city people from coming out to my house because then we have security problems !!!!!!!!

  • Awesome idea. I have a pretty decent deck garden in the summer but when the winter hits, nothing grows. I sprout alfalfa and mung beans and that can give you some of the fresh stuff you need.

I bought a condo because I didn't want to bankrupt myself on a house. Even 11 years ago houses were unfordable. Anyway now I've got the mortgage down to 23 thousand. It might not be much but very soon I'll own it debt free. If I bought a house of this square footage, I'd still owe 200 thousand on it.

  • great timing...America is about to get on their knees and this video is going to help them a lot...

I need the Episode 2 and all of it..

  • Sweet
