HEROxSabre yes you dipweed this is virgin de la macarena look up Stan Kenton malaguena then you will know the difference Stan kenton played the jazz band version of a guitar sole called malaguena and maynerd, who I love, played his own song that he called malaguena
@spencerflorey16 Maynard did play with Stan Kenton. As the description under the video states, Maynard played with Kenton's Innovations Orchestra, and the smaller group Kenton formed after the orchestra.
This is Maynard's version, which he simply calls"Macarena" from the early sixties LP "Color Him Wild". Many years later, it was re-released on the LP "Dues".
It is Maynard in his prime playing whatever he damn well pleases. He was insanely popular in the sixties, and deservedly so. DanV
@spencerflorey16 Hey derpwad, learn how to spell. And, if you listen to the whole song and not the first 2 seconds, you will find out that this is actually "Malaguena"
umm... i absolutely love the music, and i love the biography on maynards life, but u forgot to add that he went to india for awhile for that spiritual exploration...
Maynard played at my high school, i see the pictures and posters everyday. It must have been shortly before he died because he looked terrible. Unfortunately i wasn't in HS yet, but I'm sure it was great.
Does anyone hear that delay? especially during the solo. I can here the pitches before he lands on them in the silence before he initiates the phrase? Is that a recording error or what? I'm confused. You might need to turn your headphones on full blast to catch it (why youre not already listening to maynard on full blast eludes me anyway)
@headslo This was when recordings were made on analog tape. What you're hearing is tape print-through. The tape is wound on a reel of course, and a faint copy of the flux pattern on the tape transfers from one layer of the tape to another. It happens throughout the tape but it's only audible in very quiet spots.
This is the spoofy "Macarena" from the Color Him Wild LP in the mid 60's. It was reissued on Dues.I need to inform you newbies about the birth of Acid Jazz with Maynard's sextet on the ten minute version of "Summertime", which is largely just far out trumpet.
During this era, Maynard, Dizzy etc. would cruise around smoking pot before going into Tim Leary's house to do LSD. Tim did not allow illegal drugs inside. LSD was legal! "Those were the days my friend; I thought they'd never end." DanV
seriously malawolf85 really should have researched these songs before posting them all. this isnt malaguena and scream machine/brass maching is not maynard ferguson.
I used a Jet tone mouthpiece, i transfered from the shilke 14a4a.I didnt have any issues with it at all..But yes alot of the other trumpet players could hardly get sound out of it.
This is Actually not malaguena this is actually a song called
La Virgen de la macarena by pablo mendez and the song was played in every "corrida de toros "(Bull Run) in Spain by a trumpeteer in the actual bull ring
maynard was one of the 3 or 4 great screech trumpet players bill chase another buddy brisbois bu no boddy was better than cat anderson with the ellington band
I don't like to get into the "who's better" thing ... but ... I heard both Cat and MF live several times, and there is no comparison ... Cat screeched up there ... MF played ... big difference
@bluehorn50 Cat Anderson used two different mouthpieces, even during the same song. One for legitimate work and the other, which has been described as a "dented dime," was used for extreme high register playing. So, basically, he cheated. Cat would not have been able to play such high notes on Maynard's mouthpiece. In the '70s, Maynard used a Jet-Tone brand mouthpiece, which he is playing in this picture...very difficult for a normal trumpeter to play, so few did.
I grew up with Maynard as my favourite trumpeter. I've met him a few times, and found him bright and witty, a great guy. This particular piece is superb, the whole band was on good form. Much appreciated.
WOW! This is so much better than his run of 70s covers, which had the drawbacks of sounding similar, having the same painful hard-edged sax and flute solos, and often under considerable influence of disco. Thanks for the post, mala. What albums is this sort of stuff on?
BTW, your bio doesn't give his date of birth. 1928, right?
Sound with B**** !!! Maynard was one the all time greats! Not just for highnotes, but for the quality of sound throughout his range! Always a good vibe tohear him play!
Maynard Ferguson is a great trumpeter. But didn't he have 5 hernia operations because of playing the trumpet? I played trumpet for years, not I have a esophegeal hernia and I cannot play right not. I love the trumpet!!
i'm pretty sure that jack white from the white stripes took the main riff and feel of this song to write conquest, they sound very, very similar, anyone else agree?
