I held a wild baby hummingbird today. I found it on the ground. It was awesome! I even got to see it eat/drink...it was licking a peach that my friend handed to me. It was so cute! I held it all day!
I went to this camp today and while i was there I found a live hummingbird on the ground. It wasn't quite an expert flyer yet so it was stuck on the ground. I picked it up so it woudn't get stepped on and I carried it around all day! it was awesome...
I have a neighbor just up the street who's getting 5 times the hummers I get. Must be the altitude. ;) They live up the hill that I try to walk every day to get into shape.
Man I have only seen humming birds twice in my life. Once through a playground and another around the bushes. Its amazing you got one to just land on your hand, they dart around so dang fast and they're gone before you know it.
Thank you for sharing! That was beautiful. Waaaay back in the '70s, when I was about 13 or 14, I got hummingbirds to sit on my fingers, but they were already very used to humans. It was an amazing experience!
That's cool, I am glad it brought you memories. You might get a chance to try it again. It will make you feel like a kid. I once had one land on me when I was about 13 on Lake Mead in the desert. I had on a bright red and orange flower bathrobe. A hummer landed on me and started tasting my sleeve. When I finally got one to land on me again as an adult, it transported back to that feeling.
You are one lucky guy. I love them so much, had a feeder, but none showed, but then I found a little nest in the background, it was a bit smaller than a quarter, and so they were there. You were touched by an angel, a little "Tinkerbell," so to speak...lucky you.
We had our first rufous on March 3rd although they might have been coming sooner. We had a nice warm weekend. We are in Inverness. It's north of San Francisco on Tomales Bay. I love their little put put sound.-karen
How really really cool I've never tried that. Check out my videos on hummingbirds. I'm trying to get more people interested so that there will be an audience for this sort of thing.
nice!

not too long if you try it when they are migrating. We have heavy traffic in the Spring.

I have never seen a nest. Would like to but I never stumbled upon one. They are so small I'm sure it takes time and you have to know where to look.

Yes, I can't wait for the weather to get a little warmer where I live and we have some migrating visitors. I'll get my camera out again.
