A fanboy is an idiot who argues blindly against all other reasonable arguments. An enthusiast however is someone who has a sincere & genuine love of something that holds wonder or achievement etc, & is happy to devote time and money into sharing this passion with others. I am in the latter category! I was a kid of the 70s and 80s & the first home computer owning generation. I returned to this via emulation in the late 90s, which was a total surprise to me. Emulation was great but hollow.
@EgoShredder Looking over the conversation in this thread, I imagine I used the term fanboy because some person was very angered that I think the overall gaming experience was much better on the Commodore 64. As you state, some titles might have been great on the Amstrad, however, I said overall. Then he ranted about some (very excellent) cpc demo made in 2011 to prove his point. Just seemed like a fanboy. You might very well be an enthusiast. I don't mind people using their comps.
Yes I hate fanboys and some of the worst I have come across are Amiga and C64 owners. The Spectrum, Atari and CPC crowd are much more friendly and open minded. I would say that personally I was thrilled to be part of the 70s / 80s era of computing, which sums up how I feel about then and now. I just wish modern day programmers would use the power available more efficiently, like they HAD to back in the 80s. Good to talk with you by the way :-)
@EgoShredder To be honest, I don't think the spectrum, Atari and CPC crowd are that much more open minded :). However, at least in my country they were a very much smaller crowd. I hear what you say about using the available computing power, however, the power available is through the roof. Back in the 80s two or three guys made a game. Today a whole team of people are involved, with about as many people involved as you would find in a low to medium budget movie. Good talking to u 2
great video. having got the amstrad for christmas as a young kid in its early days and trading for an amiga when that first came out i hadnt realised what fantastic games were released on the cpc
@Gizametalman ... I'm preeeetty sure they did. It's insanely obvious.
Makes me piss when developers these days think they're being oh-so daring by putting sex scenes into their games when there was full frontal and outright pornography back in the early 80's.
If someone remembers a game called ONE please could you do a review on it and also please explain the plot as I remember the game well it's just I have no idea what the game is about or what the objective is at all .... If your not sure it's about a boy and his father who chases after him all the time and I think you have to collect items it something.
I also wanted to add. without angering certain fanboys too much, that I understand it's cool to have the hardware and still play with it. Just don't expect any unwarranted respect over it, because it's really just a strange hobby these days and normal people can use emulators for trying games with ease. And even though the 8-bit machines had their strengths and weaknesses, the experience wasn't too different from machine to machine, and the 8-bit war is over. IBM PCs won (inb4 enter a MacHead)
@jouranoos Indeed. And on some rare occasions I bring out the old hardware myself, but I never talk down on people using emulators over the old hardware. The experience is hardly that different. As I said, it is a hobby for a very select group of people (and i don't necessarily mean elite).
There is nothing strange, weird or fanboyish about owning and using the computers from the past, and I do not seek approval. I mean people still drive old classic cars for pleasure and they are just regular people. Emulators cannot emulate the ENTIRE experience, and while using a PC you cannot escape the fact you are using a PC and that spoils it for me. One day emulation is all we will have, so best enjoy what we still have while it is still around.
@EgoShredder There is no need to seek approval for owning and using computers from the past. However, normal people hardly do it. If you don't like the term fanboy, then let's call it enthusiast or hobbyist. Some people still like to screen super 8 films on a white sheet every once in a while, however, most people had them transferred to DVD if they enjoyed watching them a lot. Enjoy it, never said you shouldn't. But don't try to pass it off as being a very common activity.
@EgoShredder Well, the prices on ebay just reflect how much hardware is available at any given time. Not necessarily how many people do the hobby. Know what you mean though with these prices. Decided against reviving my amiga days, and concentrating on my current machines instead.
Thanks a lot to share this video,it gave me many emotions, feelings,i enjoyed so much playing with this computer in the 80's,some of the games reminds me great moments of my childhood and as a teenager,i began crying but it's marvellous people like you, keeping old computers, old video games (the most funny ever, not the same sensations now with the videogames of 2011 !)
“Thank god I had an Amstrad CPC464. It was the best of the whole bunch, albeit the most expensive. I know, as my dad worked on one of these beasts, programming for a living. They were the most versatile and advanced micros at the time. I still have all the mags, books, printers, packaging and everything. I remember what a special occasion it was to play the games. We had to ask Dad to load them as we weren’t allowed to touch his work gear. It was too special and sacred. :)”
@dfendr93 Personally I think he should have said: "Well, I liked my dad's Amstrad. But I obviously never experienced the great animations and sound effects of the Commodore 64. Based on the fact that the Amstrad had more colors, I decided it was the best. Even though most games played way better on the Spectrum and C64. It doesn't matter, because I was hardly allowed to touch my dads precious computer at all, while the commodore fanboys were living life with their Tac 2 sticks."
@trocoloco I'm assuming you are referring to the very recent demo? Yes, it's a very impressive demo. HOWEVER, we have to look at the actual gaming experiences on the machines. Sure, Amstrad had a very good palette and can make very detailed images. The sprites still moved very jerkily. I've seen cross platform game-comparisons, and I have yet to see the Amstrad win even one. Who cares that someone is able to churn out an impressive demo 20 years after people stopped using the computer-system?
@TheCarambah Well CPCs unlike C64 is not a "game console with a keyboard", remember no custom chips for hardware sprites, nor hard scroll. Many games where lazy programmed and straight spectrum ports. But it's hilarous when you say "I've seen cross platform game-comparisons, and I have yet to see the Amstrad win even one", i'll give you examples of far superior games on CPC: Double Dragon 2, Arkanoid 2, Chase HQ, Golden Axe, P-47 Thunderbolt, Batman the movie, Prohibition or what have you..
@trocoloco Hey The CPC scene is small compared with C64 but hey, C64 got owned with the BF just because it is in recent years when people is starting to learn how to squeeze CPC's real capabilities, don't get too upset about it m8, and check out the new CPC stuff like Star Sabre or the Amstrad Sub Hunter version... u will get a surprise and see how jerky they play =)
@trocoloco Also, had a look at some of the examples of "superior" cpc games. I am not impressed, but hell, if you think they are better, thats all that should matter for you.
"C64 got owned with the BF"
I wouldn't say C64 got owned. The 64 had some great demos too, but I already said that Batman Forever was a good demo.
"don't get too upset about it m8"
You seem to be far more obsessive and upset. Do I really give a shit? No. We are probably both using PCs today.
@TheCarambah Actually I do have and use the CPC, C64 and Amiga 600 still, and I rather use real hardware as starting point to know what I'm talking about rather than just watching youtube videos or emulators
Obviously there are better games for C64 like Myth which I love it, but hey It doesn't matter if those games "don't impress you", they still better on Amstrad. But hey if you feel happy saying that C64 is the shit , all right then good on ya
@trocoloco "Actually I do have and use the CPC, C64 and Amiga 600 still"
I have C64 and an Amiga 600, however I keep them in crates. Only very strange people still bother using that stuff. Emulators works fine for normal people.
"But hey if you feel happy saying that C64 is the shit , all right then good on ya "
Good job regurgitating what I told you in the previous message: "if you think they are better, thats all that should matter for you."
@trocoloco "Yeah it's really weird to use software on the machine that was made for if you got one..."
Yeah, if not for the fact that PC design has reached the point where it's as smooth as the original and more easily accessible. My only complaint is that I can not use Wico Boss. I even have an Amiga 1200 which I also used to surf the net, however only obsessive nerds bother doing that stuff anymore.
Yes, it is weird to wait 10 minutes for a game to load, when an emulator does it instantly.
@trocoloco "no custom chips for hardware sprites, nor hard scroll."
My point exactly, the Commodore had much better scrolling and smooth animations.
"Many games where lazy programmed and straight spectrum ports."
Well, for whatever reason, in the initial message I was talking about overall gaming experience. (Look at title of video: 100 Amstrad GAMES. Hurr durr "console with keyboard".
"it's hilarous when you say "I've seen cross platform game-comparisons..."
I owned a CPC464 & ZX Spectrum 48K in the 1980s, plus had weekly use of a friend's C64. We both acknowledged our micros had strengths & weaknesses, plus some games had better versions or genres on each machine. For example he was gutted when got Gryzor & Match Day II but then Wizball and Uridium were better on his. The audio was great on both actually if you appreciate the differences. Both superb computers that deserve credit & accolades in both directions! I own a C64 as well
@EgoShredder Yes, the Amstrad certainly had it's strengths. I never denied that, however the strengths were so rarely taken advantage of that most titles were better on Commodore and Spectrum. Scrolling being the biggest problem with Amstrad. But some beautiful screenshots from Amstrad though. But let's face it, even though I had great times with my 8-bit Commodore, Amiga blew it out of the water. And my PC blew my Amiga out of the water. And so forth. Nice memories though.

Thank God I had a Commodore 64 - simulations, wargames, adventure games, games like Little Computer People, Alter Ego, Sentinel, Gold Box series of RPG's and on and on!!!
Wow! I had never seen any Amstrad CPC games before. I'm surprised! The graphics generally look better than those for the Commodore 64, mostly due to the extended color palette. Nice!
Ok, Amstrad wins at colors, C64 wins at scrolling and sound, Spectrum wins at CPU speed, Spectrum and C64 win at having original games, NES wins at high quality games, and MSX loses at everything. The 8-bit wars are over for me.
the cpc had the best graphics out of all the 8 bit computers as fuck the spectrum it was shit with its shit graphics and the c64 only had the better sound over it ///////amstrad cpc rules as fuck the rest play the best
those were the days... by the way, I miss some spanish titles that were masterpieces too, such as La Abadia Del Crimen, Army Moves, Freddy Hardest, Dr Livingstone, Goodie, Phantis
hey - do you know a game where you play a ship and you have go to all kinds of diffrent maps getting out of the ship and run to get bullets to fire at a barrier on the main map so you will be able to get the 3 stones in the bottom ????
If you had a colour monitor the graphics for the Amstrad were much better than the Commodore or the Speccy. It had more colours than the Spectrum and the images were a lot sharper than the Commodore. But the sound let it down quite a bit, unfortunately.
I knew nothing about this system until recently, and only know very little about it now. As a C64 fan this is not an easy thing to admit, but I have to say that this system looks incredible and seems to outperform the C64 in many areas. I've seen a few pics of the unit and it's a very nice looking machine. I see a few commenters here saying that the sound chip was its achilles' heel. But the graphics are stunning, tons better than even the NES. I can appreciate why those who owned one loved it.
@97channel hey! well I see both on par... IMHO graphics in amstrad look cooler than C64s (lower res though) because the colors were much more vivid than the 'washed' palette of the C64, but C64 hardware sprites often meant smoother scrolling.
SID chip on C64 made wonderful sounds and was superior to CPC's AY8192, but this one was not bad at all!! it had 3 channels and noise. There's incredible music out there for the CPC. Look for Glider Rider or HATE here in youtube
That's right, "The Sacred Armour of Antiriad". This game was released on Commodore64 and Apple IIe under a different title, "Rad Warrior". Go figure.
wow these games graphics were fair compared to today's games but at least as much fun to play! Thanks for the vid that reminded me so many great moment!
By the way, does anybody know what's the name of the game at 0:54 ? Thnx
I had an Amstrad back in the day and had cousins who had a commodore 64,Spectrum and BBC/Electron and I can say the Amstrad was the better machine for all round use. If you bought a Speech synthesizer then the sound quality was just like the commodores who had the advantage of it coming through your TV set. So the better the TV speakers the better the sound was on the commodore. The same rule applied with the Amstrad as both systems had the same 3 channel 7 octaves per channel sound capabilities
it looks so good all....over here in the Netherlands everybody just used to own a C64, I knew one guy with a spectrum, one with an msx but nobody in my circle of friends used to own an Amstrad...
the graphics seem real colourfull and rich...but onscreen movement sometimes sluggish..or it that the emulator???
if you cant find the system and carts/disks i found an emulator at romworld-though i never heard of this system i came accross it for super pac-man diskette (rom)
Nice! Sinclair and Amstrad are not well known in the US, I think. The C64 and Atari were more popular on the other side of the Atlantic pond. Never got my hands on an Amstrad, but I remember how popular it was in, say, Germany. I was in Poland at the time, and Atari was more popular. I see I missed out a lot on not having had a chance on playing with the CPC.
Loved the Amstrad when i was a kid! didn't like the loading times and random crashes though lol few faves of mine: Spellbound, absolute classic! R-Type Ikari Warriors Rainbow Islands 180 Arkanoid - Classic! Arkanoid 2 New zeland Story.. omg there was loads...
cpc had better colours than c64 better colour palette almost like 16bit! but its slow and sound chip is weak but i love them machine ..i wish i would had that machine but its really rare here in Finland
Does anyone know the name of the game at 9:23? It looks a lot like Crafton & Xunk, which is one of my favorites (and is at 5:25). Thanks for posting this.

Wow! I had never seen any Amstrad CPC games before. I'm surprised! The graphics generally look better than those for the Commodore 64, mostly due to the extended color palette. Nice!

1:41 you even sensored Amstrad CPC games?
worse thing about amstrad was they only used a tiny part of the screen, so you would have a 14" monitor but really played on a 6 inch

Ok, Amstrad wins at colors, C64 wins at scrolling and sound, Spectrum wins at CPU speed, Spectrum and C64 win at having original games, NES wins at high quality games, and MSX loses at everything. The 8-bit wars are over for me.

If you had a colour monitor the graphics for the Amstrad were much better than the Commodore or the Speccy. It had more colours than the Spectrum and the images were a lot sharper than the Commodore. But the sound let it down quite a bit, unfortunately.
Eggmandu 1 year ago
I knew nothing about this system until recently, and only know very little about it now. As a C64 fan this is not an easy thing to admit, but I have to say that this system looks incredible and seems to outperform the C64 in many areas. I've seen a few pics of the unit and it's a very nice looking machine. I see a few commenters here saying that the sound chip was its achilles' heel. But the graphics are stunning, tons better than even the NES. I can appreciate why those who owned one loved it.
97channel 1 year ago
@97channel hey! well I see both on par... IMHO graphics in amstrad look cooler than C64s (lower res though) because the colors were much more vivid than the 'washed' palette of the C64, but C64 hardware sprites often meant smoother scrolling.
SID chip on C64 made wonderful sounds and was superior to CPC's AY8192, but this one was not bad at all!! it had 3 channels and noise. There's incredible music out there for the CPC. Look for Glider Rider or HATE here in youtube

Lol i remember glider rider on the speccy, that game was solid. I never really knew what the hell was going on, good times

The same rule applied with the Amstrad as both systems had the same 3 channel 7 octaves per channel sound capabilities

some seconds of each game cannot show the jerky scrolling and sound of this machine.

Memories indeed, I used to play my Amstrad for hours on end.
Sadly, my Amstrad broke down :(
Savage, Sorcery and Gryzor/Contra were totally awesome. There was also a Beverely Hills Cop game that I was addicted to.
