@jason101other there is not such a thing as "the best orchestra in the world" there are many top orchestra's and do not forget conductors, because they have an enormous influence on the orchesta, orchestra's playing the same part, can sound very differently lead by another conductor who has a different view on how a certain peace of music should sound like. I guess you would write a good tune too if Stalin was looking over your shoulder. I imagine each note was accompanied with a thought of a sub-zero gulag, being shot in the back of the head or being worked to death on fruitless projects if it was not "acceptable". These things happened regularly.
Last week I could watch live for free at the Berliner Philharmoniker Digital Concert Hall The TERESA CARREÑO YOUTH SYMPHONY of Venezuela performing Beethoven's 5th with Christan Vásquez and Prokofiev's 5th with Sir Simon Rattle himself.
It was a wonderful experience that gave me the inspiration for making the JAZZ FUNERAL SYMPHONY video on Ipuche Riva's 5th.
I strongly recommend the Digital Concert Hall to everyone. It is worth the 150 Euros year subscription if you really love Music.
@xRaito09x- Yes, most perfessional Bassist would rather have a fifth string attached to their bass then an extension. The fifth string can be a C or a Bb. The extension on the otherhand, you have 5 switches you have to flip to obtain a certain tone each time.
So that's an Eb clarinet at 0:58, right? That guy plays it so well! I really like that part and also at 1:16 when he has that high ringing note! It's rings in my ear like nothing ever has!

Really? But this performance has no Russian fire to this. It seems like Dudamel did get the bombastic orchestration but he doesn't get what Prokofiev tried to show.

Sacrilegious as it may sound, the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra with Dudamel in the same repertoire sound way more convincing. Maybe the jaded buffed musicians of the BPO need more tyrant like conductors to wake them up from their stupor. It is a sentiment shared by many in Berlin these days. It is a shame. I am ever so grateful that I still have my Furtwangler recordings with the orchestra.

The Bolivars do it and mean it. Sadly, this attitude is also shared by the Russian musicians whom many are nationalists.
Part of being an artist is being able to interpret and assimilate different time periods and their historical meanings. It is impossible to have lived every situation. For instance,I doubt current musicians lived through the classical period yet they perform Mozart...
There is no reason a conductor should be uptight. We are humans, music makes us want to move. It is part of who we are. Dudamel is setting an outstanding example for the history of music.
Dudamel has a profound understanding of this piece. He has memorized the score. Few conductors are capable of this. This shows his extreme intelligence. He is setting a new standard for conductors. Check out Christian Vasquez doing Mahler's 2nd. He has replaced Dudamel in the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra in Venezuela.

its a good performance but dudamel its too overrated he didnt bring anything new to this music, its just a reading, when this music needs to pass trough the artists to make it unique, for example the george szell reading what a wonderful and unique version, and thats really important to any artist that has the kind of praise that dudamel has, and its the reason why i think he is not up tha that level yet.
I hope that they forgive me, but I believe that it is custión of tastes, and respect your opinions, but this boy is revolutionizing the classic music all over the world, and is from a tropical country, is Latin, and many do not want to understand it, because they wanted to have the director with complicated surname directing the philharmonic of Berlin or the philharmonic of Vienna!
I totally agree. Dudamel is young, fresh, enthusiastic about music and very talented. I had the pleasure to see him and the Simon Bolivar orchestra in Sept. 08 - it was just fantastic.
Of course, those who are Karajan-believers will not appreciate this latin, young freshness.
I believe that that posting this, they do not have idea of what is a jewel in brute! Dudamel is a person who with any orchestra can touch up to the soul, many people think that it is a overated, but we have a very popular saying that he says, nobody is a golden currency to sympathize with the whole world!
The conductor isn't over stated. Look at any revered conductor in their 20s and you'll see them jumping all over the place. It's just the nature of a young person. Look at Celibidache for example, conducting in the 1950s and then again in the 90s. Massive difference (obviously). We need people like Dudamel to get the mothball smell out of classical music.
La opinión de un compatriota suyo no es objetiva..Dudamel tiene que madurar todavía mucho. Dirigir a las mejores orquestas del mundo como la Berliner o a la Fca de Viena no significa que todo lo que haga sea oro..
I dont want to be mean or anything, but what is it with replies in other languages? If you want to talk about the music, do so in english. it's an international language...
Yes, of course, but the spanish language also is universal. It's spoken by more than 300 million people.
(previous traduction: The opinion of a compatriot of Dudamel is not objective..Dudamel has to mature still very much. Lead the best orchestras of the world as the Berliner Ph..or the Wiener Ph. doesn't mean that every piece that lead is gold..)
actually that's not really okay, 'cause not everyone will understand you.. but what Lonegan63 made isn't okay either, he began on english and then commented on spanish... I mean, if you want to speak spanish do so, there will be someone else talking spanish (like me), but if you talk on english you may keep talking on english at least on that comment...
anyway I LOVE the fact youtube is full of many languages, but don't abuse of that...
technically, yes. but youtube is owned by an american company (google) and is thus english. i just think it's easier to communicate that way, too. i just hate when we're having a discussion about this brilliant music and someone's replying in another language...
I love how Dudamel brings South American fire to this piece (instead of the usual Stalinistic hammering). He reveals the bravura that Prokofiev in fact applied to it. Excellent performance!!
So, are the staves merely an instruction to make a nice sound...? Quoting Mahler, a composer wouldn't compose something he can express on words (or something like that). This symphony expresses similar things with a lot of Shostakovich's symphonies, the opression by Stalin and the totalitarian dictator.
I know that you know bullshit. There are no evidence whether Shostakovich hated or admired neither Stalin nor Trotsky. Shostakovich was very indifferent to politics.
And don't praise Trotsky who was the real murderer of Russian people for the sake of "World Revolution". Ok, man?
@dicthash You are mistaken, and you are a revisionist. Shostakovich's father was a Polish anarchist and anti tsar. After Stalin died, Shostakovich wrote the symphony that was closest to his heart, Symphony Number 12, 1917. In my opinion his best. Shostakovivh was a true believer, and above all a huminist.
@alejoeisabel after stalin died shostakovich wrote his 10th symphony, for example, the 2nd movement is a musical portait of stalin and shows his madness and inner agitation! he could never have done something like that when stalin was still alive!
@dicthash Very doubtful. He was phobic to Russian Nationalist and the anti Jewish pogroms. He was however a Russian Anti-nationalist, ie, pro Soviet. He did after all establish the Red Army that smashed the German Army and defeated Germany, and saved the world and Russia from becoming Greater Germany. I think the world owes gratitude to Trotsky the ultimate anti Stalinist and pro Russian.
@dicthash My friend, those are the facts. The Germans planned to colonize Russia with Germans. They were more than pleased to do to the Russians what was done with the Jews and Communists of Europe. It was a German imperialist plan. You must be an admirere of Adolf Hitler the ultimate anti communist.
@padredemishijos12 O RLY? and the US citizen says that? you, americans, colonized afganistan, iraq and stuff. and most of you can't point germany, russia and israel on the map. so just STFU and, at least, listen to this music.
@oliee87 You may be right about that. We in the USA learn about geography through our invasions. These are very expensive geography lessons. Did you know that Shostakovich is a Polish name from Beloruss? His grandfather was a Polish anarchist organizing the Czar's soldiers to resist and organize. When Poland was a Soviet ally, no Polish soldiers ever died. Now, as US vassel, Poland's soldiers are dying in the Middle East for the benefits of US oil companies. We are grateful for your deaths
@padredemishijos12 you really try to be ironic but it didn't work. i've got piece of advice for you: take this money you spend on war and buy some books for all your kids. we should do the same, unfortunately... anyway, we don't just argue about thing we know nothing about on youtube. i really hope you, personally, will just read some reliable historic books and think it over once again. CU
@oliee87 We do not need to spend money on education because we can import cheep engineers from Poland and cheep scientist from the former Soviet Union. Look how much we save on education. We are very grateful for all your intellectual workers. If you have a low education we will be glad to accecpt you as a mercenary.
@dicthash In the 1944 and 1945 German budget, they had set up funds for the next generation (improved) extermination camps which the Nazis had gained from the experience of exterminating Jews and Communists in occupied Europe. The plan was to depopulate all of Russia (Eurasia), and colonize it with Germans. That is a fact. 26 million Soviets died so that Russia would survive. Chilling but true.
do a little research (and I mean very little - it's right there on the surface!) into Prokofiev's live and you'll see a very distinct Stalin relationship
which movement is this?

The conductor isn't over stated. Look at any revered conductor in their 20s and you'll see them jumping all over the place. It's just the nature of a young person. Look at Celibidache for example, conducting in the 1950s and then again in the 90s. Massive difference (obviously). We need people like Dudamel to get the mothball smell out of classical music.

Exactly! we need it!

Great Berliner Philharmoniker....but Dudamel I think that is overstated
Lonegan63 2 years ago
Dudamel is great¡¡¡
MUSICOSO58 2 years ago
La opinión de un compatriota suyo no es objetiva..Dudamel tiene que madurar todavía mucho. Dirigir a las mejores orquestas del mundo como la Berliner o a la Fca de Viena no significa que todo lo que haga sea oro..
Lonegan63 2 years ago
I dont want to be mean or anything, but what is it with replies in other languages? If you want to talk about the music, do so in english. it's an international language...
Harle4 2 years ago
Yes, of course, but the spanish language also is universal. It's spoken by more than 300 million people.
(previous traduction: The opinion of a compatriot of Dudamel is not objective..Dudamel has to mature still very much. Lead the best orchestras of the world as the Berliner Ph..or the Wiener Ph. doesn't mean that every piece that lead is gold..)
ps. my english is poor...sorry
Lonegan63 2 years ago
if we are speaking of a russian composer, shouldn't we be speaking russian?
if we are speaking of a german orchestra, shouldn't we be speaking german?
ehtonal 2 years ago
actually that's not really okay, 'cause not everyone will understand you.. but what Lonegan63 made isn't okay either, he began on english and then commented on spanish... I mean, if you want to speak spanish do so, there will be someone else talking spanish (like me), but if you talk on english you may keep talking on english at least on that comment...
anyway I LOVE the fact youtube is full of many languages, but don't abuse of that...
antoniotvfan 2 years ago
lovely music, maybe not the best of BPO, but really impressive...
adorable musica, tal vez no lo mejor del BPO, pero realmente impresionante...
antoniotvfan 2 years ago
technically, yes. but youtube is owned by an american company (google) and is thus english. i just think it's easier to communicate that way, too. i just hate when we're having a discussion about this brilliant music and someone's replying in another language...

I love how Dudamel brings South American fire to this piece (instead of the usual Stalinistic hammering). He reveals the bravura that Prokofiev in fact applied to it. Excellent performance!!
SharpHarp99 2 years ago
This piece is all about Stalinistic hammering!
Sinfoniette 2 years ago 4
What relationship has stalinism with Prokofiev music? I believe that anything. Some are seeing ghosts in the staves...I think..
Lonegan63 2 years ago
So, are the staves merely an instruction to make a nice sound...? Quoting Mahler, a composer wouldn't compose something he can express on words (or something like that). This symphony expresses similar things with a lot of Shostakovich's symphonies, the opression by Stalin and the totalitarian dictator.
Sinfoniette 2 years ago
I know that Shostakovich hated Stalin, and I suspect admired Trotsky. He was luckier than Federico Garcia Lorca, killed by Franco.
alejoeisabel 1 year ago
and thus the Poulenc violin sonata was written for the death of Lorca.
Sinfoniette 1 year ago
@alejoeisabel
I know that you know bullshit. There are no evidence whether Shostakovich hated or admired neither Stalin nor Trotsky. Shostakovich was very indifferent to politics.
And don't praise Trotsky who was the real murderer of Russian people for the sake of "World Revolution". Ok, man?
dicthash 1 year ago
@dicthash You are mistaken, and you are a revisionist. Shostakovich's father was a Polish anarchist and anti tsar. After Stalin died, Shostakovich wrote the symphony that was closest to his heart, Symphony Number 12, 1917. In my opinion his best. Shostakovivh was a true believer, and above all a huminist.
alejoeisabel 1 year ago
@alejoeisabel
1. you are wrong about Shosty's father he wasn't polish
2. that's all your "proofs"? that are not proofs by no way. that are only your insinuations
dicthash 1 year ago
@dicthash
Shosty was 100% russian.
dicthash 1 year ago
@dicthash 75% Russian and 25% Polish Catholic from Belorus.
padredemishijos12 1 year ago
@alejoeisabel after stalin died shostakovich wrote his 10th symphony, for example, the 2nd movement is a musical portait of stalin and shows his madness and inner agitation! he could never have done something like that when stalin was still alive!
mortalfrog0815 1 year ago
@mortalfrog0815
Shostakovich started his 10th symphony in late 1940th while Stalin was alive. Your conspiracy theory sucks.
dicthash 1 year ago
@alejoeisabel
Trotsky was a huge russophobe while Shosty was a true Russian patriot.
dicthash 1 year ago
@dicthash Very doubtful. He was phobic to Russian Nationalist and the anti Jewish pogroms. He was however a Russian Anti-nationalist, ie, pro Soviet. He did after all establish the Red Army that smashed the German Army and defeated Germany, and saved the world and Russia from becoming Greater Germany. I think the world owes gratitude to Trotsky the ultimate anti Stalinist and pro Russian.
padredemishijos12 1 year ago
@padredemishijos12
man, you are talking huge bullshit. I'm even shocked. Is this your propaganda that had created such a distorted picture of Russian history?
dicthash 11 months ago
@dicthash My friend, those are the facts. The Germans planned to colonize Russia with Germans. They were more than pleased to do to the Russians what was done with the Jews and Communists of Europe. It was a German imperialist plan. You must be an admirere of Adolf Hitler the ultimate anti communist.
padredemishijos12 11 months ago
@padredemishijos12 O RLY? and the US citizen says that? you, americans, colonized afganistan, iraq and stuff. and most of you can't point germany, russia and israel on the map. so just STFU and, at least, listen to this music.
oliee87 9 months ago
@oliee87 You may be right about that. We in the USA learn about geography through our invasions. These are very expensive geography lessons. Did you know that Shostakovich is a Polish name from Beloruss? His grandfather was a Polish anarchist organizing the Czar's soldiers to resist and organize. When Poland was a Soviet ally, no Polish soldiers ever died. Now, as US vassel, Poland's soldiers are dying in the Middle East for the benefits of US oil companies. We are grateful for your deaths
padredemishijos12 9 months ago
@padredemishijos12 you really try to be ironic but it didn't work. i've got piece of advice for you: take this money you spend on war and buy some books for all your kids. we should do the same, unfortunately... anyway, we don't just argue about thing we know nothing about on youtube. i really hope you, personally, will just read some reliable historic books and think it over once again. CU
oliee87 9 months ago
@oliee87 We do not need to spend money on education because we can import cheep engineers from Poland and cheep scientist from the former Soviet Union. Look how much we save on education. We are very grateful for all your intellectual workers. If you have a low education we will be glad to accecpt you as a mercenary.

@dicthash Trotsky and Shostakovich were Communists, plain and simple. Those are the facts.
padredemishijos12 1 year ago
@padredemishijos12
Trotsky was a jew and huge russophobe while Shosty was Russian. This is quite a difference.
dicthash 11 months ago
@dicthash In the 1944 and 1945 German budget, they had set up funds for the next generation (improved) extermination camps which the Nazis had gained from the experience of exterminating Jews and Communists in occupied Europe. The plan was to depopulate all of Russia (Eurasia), and colonize it with Germans. That is a fact. 26 million Soviets died so that Russia would survive. Chilling but true.
padredemishijos12 11 months ago
@padredemishijos12
I know this as I'm Russian. But do you know how this 26m figure is yielded? This figure is a root of a wide spread myth about soviet military losses.
dicthash 11 months ago
do a little research (and I mean very little - it's right there on the surface!) into Prokofiev's live and you'll see a very distinct Stalin relationship
BernardProfitendieu 2 years ago
"all"? Well, it is also about colour, melody, esprit. And especially for the latter, Dudamel is the right man.
SharpHarp99 2 years ago
But without Stalinistic hammering here, its just extremely good music.
Sinfoniette 2 years ago
I have read that it was composed as an optimistic motive,in 1944.
But the stalinist influence in the music and the opression,really is refelcted in teh music of DSCH and Prokofiev.

Just kidding... I prefer other conductors as well, but I maintain to think that Gustavo Dudamel did achieve a great excitement bow in this piece.
