@LiquorWreckedEmGood Applying (very) simple logic to the facts gathered from watching this video: individual is well-skilled at playing a guitar. individual does not demonstrate ability to speak English at all. Conclusion: there can be no connection made between individual's ability to play a guitar well and individual's ability to speak English well, because individual does not speak English in this video. Gibson USA and Fender USA guitars are the only guitars worth having. Epiphone and Squire are junk. Mexican & Japanese Fenders are sometimes decent, but it's always worth the extra cash to buy a USA model. Ibanez, Schecter, Jackson, Dean, ESP, PRS, etc..; all JUNK! PRS makes some decent guitars, but for the price you're better off buying a Gibson.
@showam1 Looking to get one. any advice? I can afford it but looking to get it for around 3k not closer to 4 as most are advertised new. did you get a good price?
They cost about $3200 when I got mine, now they are about $3800 or so.
I would say to buy used for the best deal, but I wasn't willing to take that risk for mine so I shouldn't tell someone else to do it. One thing I will say is to watch out for the fakes, If you want a Les Paul Custom, be careful. Some shops special ordered look alike guitars to sell. Then their are the junk Chinese fakes around as well. Watch for binding with nibs at fret ends, Split diamond, Ebony fret board
also watch for burst pattern on the back and sides of guitar. For some reason the Chinese can't put a good nut on the fakes either, they look to big and bright white. Look for the block at first fret and not trapezoids. All of those points will help identify a real Gibson custom, but it won't help you if they post a picture of the real one and ship you a copy. Sorry best I can do for you.
@showam1 I got one today...a blem for about $3700 with tax so not bad. I know the genuine bursts on the custom are like a tear drop. Ths studio versions are a little different. Got it through guitar center so pretty sure it's legit. I appreciate all the advice. I've wanted a custom for so long. Already have a standard but I need the sound of a custom...feel too. Isn't the fretboard radius a little more curved than the standards? Not sure but it sure felt nice.
@showam1 I think I got hosed...does your serial number start with a CS? Also no Made In USA stamp on the back. I got it from guitar center so i thought it was legit but if it's not I'll lose my effin mind. got 30 days so they can blow me if they're effin with me.
Yes, my serial number starts with a "CS745XX" CS = Custom shop.
Many Gibson guitars do not say "made in the U.S.A." Mine does not either.
Funny thing is almost all the fakes do, so it means nothing.
To spot Most fakes, look at the binding on the fret board, a real Gibson custom will have little nibs over the fret ends, this is labor intensive and every fake I have ever seen did not do this.
My serial is put on with white ink type stamp, not pressed into the wood.
@showam1 so I contacted gibson and sent pics..no reply yet but after doing some research the custom shop apparently no longer stamps Made in USA on their guitars anymore...also the originals from 78-84 I believe didn't have the stamp either, so to keep it a true RI they did it that way too...that's what I came up with so far. I'll keep you posted and thanks for your help...I was freaking out last night.
@showam1 plays real nice...are th frets lower compared to the standard? Also it seems the pickups aren't as hot as the ones on my standard even though I believe they're the same. I like the sound though...a lot more balls it seems and not as muddy as my standard. I think I need to change the strings to what I play with and just play the crap out of it. It's still too new for my taste. Funny thing is I got it at a used/blem price and there was not a thing wrong with it.
@showam1 you know it's funny you said that about the pickups in my standard because I did raise them since I had it when I set it up. By muddy I mean hotter more gain than the custom, almost like the 500t found in the classics. I have the 490r and 490t in the standard and I believe they are the same in the custom right?
On the standard, I can't remember if you raise or lower them to fix the "muddy" sound. their are also those who say to change out the pots to a different type. Go to the les Paul forum, they live for stuff like this. You have about tapped me out on my knowledge base :)
@showam1 definitely lower them. I raised them closer and they're pretty hot...something to do with getting the strings closer to the magnetic field causing a greater disturbance/hotter sound if I remember correctly. Hey i really appreciate all your help on this. I was really bummed last night when I thought it was a fake. Happy to find out it's not. Thanks again!
To bad, a well rounded/seasoned musician can engage the audience with melody as well as dazzle them with technical prowess. You say he can only do half of what is required.
Guy can play guitar. The sound is awesome. Study some Gilmour feel, and youll be well on your way. Check out some Brian Robertson wah styles, and Scott Gorham tasty leads, Those will give you a mean arsenal of leads....peace
Ok, best or just about the best shredder I have heard. . how about some "Music" though? I am impressed with this shredding . . and a bit jealous. . but some Clapton or something that sounds musical would also be nice to hear.

@evju125 sad thing my uncle had one of these and he sld it and bought some yamaha guitar tht he uses for his live stuf... even though he gives lessons with his gibson sg...
I've never heard a Les Paul sound like this. It's great, really graceful, and reminds me of Eric Johnson a lot. I like the way you change pickups and get different tones, too. Nice.
@westpoint64 It's the combo of the ebony fingerboard and the silverburst finish that adds brightness and other characteristics. Like a les paul custom but the silverburst gives it a more modern flavor.

One more thing to help you spot a wannabe custom. It MUST have the tear drop pattern burst. If not, it is not this guitar.
I'm not saying that they are bad... Just not a Gibson custom.

Same radius, 12" I think. It's the slick Ebony fret board and binding that makes it "feel" better.
Plan on having the "nut" fixed up by your repair guy, Gibson can't seem to cut the nut right event if their lives depended on it.

@Matte1011 Historically, the Custom model was known as the fret-less wonder.
the ones now a days have bigger frets. The stock pickups are quite hot. Give it time, it will grow on you.
If your Standard is muddy, you should prob lower the pickups in it, as they are not normally muddy. Your standard came with the 490R 498T pickups???
