  • THING HAS 5 FINGERS?!!?!

  • I was a member of the MMMS and had this record. What a thrill it was to hear the voices of my favorite creators.

  • Is that the same Al Hartley who drew those Christian comics (inlcuding some featuring Archie and his friends!) for Spire?

  • @HCShannon Yes, that's the same guy.

  • Was Stan G the same one who was an artist at Archie?

  • @alwrig, I believe so.

  • I lived in Belfast Northern Ireland in the 1960s and sent 1.00 US back in 1965 to Marvel and lo and behold a few months later a brown buff envelope dropped through the letterbox. The record was made of a pliable plastic and had this recording on it. Jeez it's great to hear it again after all these years. Takes me back to a simpler time, when my great joy was swapping comics with my friends. We were all superheroes then!!! Thanks for posting this.

    PatMcK

  • This is quite possibly the greatest thing ever.

  • The segment between Sam Rosen and Artie Simek is golden ... I have tears in my eyes while I'm laughing ...

  • Great record. Sad that it's so rare few people will hear it except here.

  • Aw...Man Steve Ditko is Spider-Man

  • Great recording, loved the vaudevillian bantering of the original Marvel Bullpen staffers! And Flo Steinberg was a true Hebrew hottie! Disappointed though, that we didn't get to hear the voice of the ever-reclusive Steve Ditko.

  • Too bad Steve Ditko hates to be in public!

  • Nicely done. Have you seen the 1966 records that had a song and a story.

  • Writers and artists they may be, but actors they're not. Still, nice to finally hear this. I'm still a little peeved that this wasn't included as a CD or flexi-disc in the "Marvel Museum" book. Seems like such an obvious choice for a collectible.

  • @Alecdeluxe "Writers and artists they may be, but actors they're not."

True although Stan Lee could easily rival Uncle Walt Disney himself as far

as personally selling his product (Marvel Comics) goes even nowadays

with it being under Disney ownership,

Wheither you like the man or not, you have to admit there's never been a salesman and a promoman for comics quite like Stan Lee.

  • This is fantastic!

  • This is Amazing

  • Bless them All.

  • thanks for the record!!!!!

  • Thanks for watching!

    -- Matt

  • Fantastic! Thank you for the recording, I've only ever read the dialogue in books, so to hear it really made my day. It's just a shame that Steve Ditko was such an introverted person that he didn't record his voice or pose for photoes.

  • Sol Brodsky and Flo Steinberg got to be the Human Torch and Invisible Girl in an issue of What If. That's something...

  • Note to PaulSoth:

Yes, m8..you are correct...Jack *did* sound *spot on* to the way WE envisioned (fancied?) him to sound.

I, for one, am glad to see Sam Rosen, Master Of Superior Graphics, included here..he also did work for, believe it or not, HARVEY Comics in the 1950's before his stint with Marvel. Amonsgt his work at Harvey: graphics for "A Reel Ghost" with Spooky, and a few "Herman & Katnip"s-BTW can you *imagine* the Rosen graphics together with Howie Post & Marty Taras art?

    Thanx,m8.

  • Having never heard Kirby's voice before, I'm pleased that he sounded just like I thought he would.

  • that was classic they all have such great personalities like theyre characters...

  • Indeed. Stan supposedly based The Fantastic Four's Ben Grimm on Jack Kirby's personality...

  • Ten stars.

  • OMFG that was great. I had no idea that such a record existed. Every one of them a Legend.

  • Shoot,no Bob Powell!

  • Wow, OMG thanks for posting this! A great piece of history that many (like myself) never had a chance to hear!

    Great job!

  • Thanks for creating and posting this. I was too young to get in on the first MMMS kit, (but I did save my allowance for the second). This brings back lots of great memories: eagerly waiting for the new comics to come to the neighborhood drug store and arguing with my friends that Marvel comics were far superior to DC! Thanks!

  • My pleasure! Thank you!

    -- Matt

  • flo stienberg sure was a cutie! About Chic Stone, I've read some things online not to complementery about how he treated other artists, but I can say, from personally corisponding with him, he was a great guy, not a snob, who did care about helping tallent improve for the industry.I own one of his brushes.

  • Flo certainly was a cutie! She was interviewed for the TRUE BELIEVER documentary about Stan Lee. That film will be released this coming year, and I have been working with the producers as a kind of consultant and also running the film's official MySpace page. YouTube doesn't allow limks, but if you Google "Stan Lee True Believer," the official site is one of the first results, and the official MySpace is not far below that.

    -- Matt

  • Some of the photos & art, are from decades after this record was made,I'd say early 1964. Never had the buck to join the club at the time, those were hard times.I'd get my books 3 for a dime used at ernies swap shop.

  • Yep, the photos come from different periods. That's pretty much the only option when trying to track down photos of every Bullpen staffer mentioned or starring on the recording.

    Thanks for the comment.

    -- Matt

  • My God, I love Jack Kirby so much. This is amazing.

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!

  • Mazaltov to the Jews who has gave us the Marvel Super Heroes and subconscious liberal political views.

  • Thanks for commenting!

    -- Matt

  • At any rate; this represents the absolute best era of Marvel, however fleeting it lasted. Very cool having it up on YouTube. Thanks again, HappyShow.

  • You're welcome! And thank you, again, for the kind words and for watching!

    -- Matt

  • flo sounds like the NANNY... lol but the highlight is Kirby calling into question Lee's creativity and self promotion! clearly this was something that started as a brotherly dispute that turned sadly nasty later. i do not doubt lee would have given jack ANYTHING but the editorship...lol. sadly, lee's higher-ups were not about to pay a mere creative artist his due.

  • Yeah, one thing some fans overlook is that Stan didn't necessarily as much control as they think he did in regard to management issues. Of course, many people believe Stan Lee owns Marvel (or did own Marvel at somne point), which he never did. Thanks for commenting!

    -- Matt

  • Very true. You see some fans slamming Stan right here on youtube. I try my best to educate them on Marvel history.

  • People think Stan owns Marvel mostly because he was the face of Marvel for such a long time. Even after he stopped working there. Even though a lot of people are talking about poor Flo, Kirby or anyone else who didn't get what they deserved working for Marvel, but recently Lee (and Cockrum before he died) have been trying to get some money for the characters they have created that are now movie stars.

  • Now if one of you nutty guys could dig up that Original Openning to the cartoon.

  • Which cartoon, mavericstud1?

  • Thanks'! Made me feel like a kid again.

And did you notice what a stereotypical Brooklyn dialect that Flo Steinberg had?

    Very enjoyable!

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it! I definitely noticed Flo's accent, and also what a cutie she was. I hear she is a really sweet lady.

    -- Matt

  • alot of old secretaries sound alot like that .;)

  • There was an interview with Flo not too long ago in an issue of Alter Ego which was really alot of fun in which she recounted her days at the Marvel Bullpen with a really great cover which was a homage to Kirby's

    Fantastic Four 51.

Well worth a read for anyone who wants to know about one of the most overlooked but interesting persons in Marvel who really had an important role in her own way in contributing to Marvel's history.

  • What, No Steve Ditko!

Stan Lee hasn't change ! And I like the Jack Kirby sounds like the Thing

  • Now that you mention it, Kack Kirby's voice would be perfect for The Thing! Even back when, Steve Ditko was reclusive, it seems.

    -- Matt

  • Well I've always thought that Kirby really put alot of himself into Ben Grimm during the heyday of those Fantastic Four comics,

I always found The Thing as Kirby did him to be one of the more human tragic characters in comics.

  • Gotta also love that Wally Wood bit,

I'll bet there aren't that many recordings of his voice from that era.

  • I was hoping to hear Steve Ditko talk and once again he refused. Nevertheless, my heros of youth come alive. What a neat experience. thank you so much!

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!

    -- Matt

  • I thought I posted a comment here about how fascinated I am finding out what a great guy posting this is!! Takes me back to my childhood. Thanks for posting this!

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!

    -- Matt

  • What a great artifact. Thanks a ton for producing and sharing that!

    'Nuff said

  • Thank you for watching and commenting!

    -- Matt

  • wayyyyy cool

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • Utterly brilliant!

  • Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

    -- Matt

  • Flo reminds me of the original Betty Brant.:)

  • I can see that, too, now that you mention it. Thanks for watching.

    -- Matt

  • I seen the Steve Ditko documentary too. Not bad apart from Steve not being in it or even allowing his voice to be recorded. I bet no one can get a clip of Steve and put it on youtube, i dont think there ever was one, not even a home movie clip. I even wondered if Johnathon Ross just made up that interview that he told the veiwer about.

  • I believe Ross talked with Steve Ditko. I have heard and read that Steve Ditko is actually very personable. He is just very, very private and has a strong code of etchics/beliefs.

    -- Matt

  • I heard of this record and saw it on Ebay once. Thanks for posting it Happy show, a vinyl coated stereophonic No Prize is on its way to you.

  • I'm glad you enjoy it! Thank you very much for watching and commenting!

    -- Matt

  • i came on looking for this after watching the channel 4 docu in search of steve ditko . i m not as into comics as i once was so i d kind ve thought steve was nt with us anymore it was great to hear hes still alive . apparently theres only a handful of known photos of him . if you can download the docu from somewhere its worth a watch . i gather steve spent a lot of his life living in relative poverty .

  • I have got to see the Steve Ditko documentary. It was great. I wish things had went better for Steve.

    Thanks for commenting!

  • Excelsior! I am too young for MMMS but I nearly joined FOOM (Friends Of Ol' Marvel) in the early 70s. The fact that I didn't is proberly my greatest regret in life.Nuff Said!

  • I was ten years old in 1965 and an ardent Marvel fan, so of course I joined the MMMS. I received their package of membership goodies, including this recording (a flexi-disc), and it's been years since I've heard it. I'm amazed at how familiar it all is, how well I remember not just the patter, but the tone and nuances of their voices...particularly Wally Wood's "I can't talk into a tape recorder" spiel.

  • It is funny how we can remember some things from our distant past just like it was yesterday. Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!

    -- Matt

  • I met Flo Steinberg earlier this year at New York Comic Con, and she was the sweetest woman! Real old school class. She had some fascinating stories about MArvel's heydey...great stuff!

  • That's really cool! I heard she was a sweet woman from others, as well.

    -- Matt

  • That was great! I have been wanting to hear that for ages....the old Marvel comics were great, especially if you grew up feeling part of that exclusive club. Stan Lee was a marketing genius!

  • I agree! Thanks for watching!

    -- Matt

  • I,d like info on the mags uncaney tales creepy worlds ect.

  • Hi; Assuming these are the black and white mags of some years ago, if you google the publisher (Alan Class) you will find quite a lot of info on these and others he published.

  • Excellent. Stand up comedy's loss was comic book's gain.

  • Some 15 or so years ago, I heard about this record. Never thought I'd get a chance to hear it. Thanks a ton dude. Also, this is the first time I've left a comment, saved a fave or rated a vid. You brought me out of the woodwork with this one.

  • I'm very glad you enjoyed it! Thanks! I have a couple more videos on this account using the audio from Marvel's fan club records that you may want to check out, too. -- Matt

  • Wow, what a great bit of history. The comics biz sure has changed.

  • It sure has! Thanks for watching! -- Matt

  • Boy, this takes me back. In those days you could call Marvel comics and speak to the writers & artists... you could even visit the offices.

  • EXCELSIOR!!! lol

  • thank you so much for this clip i grew up on marvel

and seeing and hearing the voices of these legends is

    a true honour...

  • Hi Matt,Zookiemommy's friend and bodyguard G-Man (Kg1officer) here. I too was a member of the MMMS! Your video brought back a load of memories and it was so well done. I commend you!! Keep up the good work!

  • Thanks G-Man! -- Matt

  • That was awesome! --Mel :)

  • Thank you very much, Mel! -- Matt

  • STAN LEE THE MAN

  • What was that thing with the Marvel staff as the Fantastic Four?

  • I think that was the first issue of What If? in the seventies 'What If The Marvel Bullpen Became The Fantastic Four?' It had Stan Lee as Reed Richards

Jack Kirby as The Thing who did the artwork on that issue, A fun little read.

  • I'm sorry for the sermon, I just had to get that off my chest.

  • R.I.P. Captain America.

Who out there thinks this isn't related to the Joe Simon lawsuit?

  • I'm sorry for the attitude Matt,

I'm just in a sour mood I guess.

  • That's understandable. And you might be right about the Joe Simon lawsuit being a factor in this. Thanks! -- Matt

  • Well IMHO Marvel is going to wait until Joe's death

to bring Cap back, This lawsuit is still unsettled,

(shakes head) I love the comic book medium but I really hate the way the comics industry has always treated it's greats, Simon & Kirby, Siegel & Schuster etc, I really think this is a sleazy move if the lawsuit is why Marvel is doing this, IMHO the best thing one could is just not buy that issue.

  • That's classic . Thanks .

  • You're welcome! Thank you for watching! I appreciate it! -- Matt

  • Awesome! I had the pleasure of meeting Stan and Flo at NYC Comiccon last weekend (as well as Gene Colan and Joe Sinnott), and they were all terrific! March on, Marvel!

  • You lucky dog! I'd love to meet all of those people! Thanks! -- Matt

  • Very nice, I wasn't born during Marvel's heyday

but I have always loved that period mainly for

    Jack Kirby if nothing else.

  • Jack Kirby is one of my all-time faves! Thanks! -- Matt

  • thank you for a great job on this. I was a member of the MMMS but not til 66 or 67 so I never heard this. What a great bunch of memories!!

  • You're most welcome! Thank you for watching and commenting! -- Matt

  • LOL! i cant stop watching this, i love it! Great really great stuff!

  • I'm glad you enjoy it! Thanks! -- Matt

  • This is too cool!

  • Thank you very much! -- Matt

  • Oh my gosh! This is great!

  • Thanks, Alpha! -- Matt

  • You revive the spirit... VERY COOL... Thanks.

  • Thank you very much! It was fun to make! -- Matt

  • thanks so very much for posting this..

  • Thank you for watching! -- Matt

  • I still have my MMMS ID card #11632. I think the whole kit cost just 69 cents. I had lost this record though, hadnt heard it since probably 1967. those were the days. thanks happyshow

  • You're very welcome! Thank you for wacthing! It's awesome that you were once a member of the MMMS! -- Matt

  • that was genius matt, nice one. flo was a cutie!

  • Thaks, Bomaya! Yeah, Flo was indeed a cutie! -- Matt

  • Very cool! I had never heard of the MMMS before. Thanks Matt!

  • Thank you, Russ! -- Matt

  • What a fun memory! I belonged to the MMMS. My membership appeared in Sgt. Fury #19. Great job, Matt, of taking that thin, thin plastic record and turning it into a colorful video. Stan would be proud.

  • Wow, Mark, you were a MMMS'er?! That's awesome! Thanks for the kind words! -- Matt

  • Yes, I was a Marvel fan in its early days--when FF cost only a dime and when Stan had time to write personal letters to fans--I still have a letter from Stan dated July 2, 1964. He also sent me three free annuals that summer. Stan was a real pal to us early Marvel kids.

  • This one is way cool Matt.

    Dianne

  • Thank you, Dianne! -- Matt
