Thank you for the kind words. Of course I should be good at something I've done for 30 years. It's all about practice I think.

  • i love your abasinian cat, your work is soooooo cool i wish i could do that but for now im going to have to stick to clay...X3

  • @unicornlover247

Thank you for the kind remarks. Yes, I have two abby cats. They are always "helping" me out. Clay is a great medium as well. Good luck on your ventures.

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan no problem, and yeah im getting pretty good at clay work, the only thing i havent been able to work with really is paper mache... it bugs me i reall would like to.

  • @unicornlover247

You should give yourself a chance to make something paper mache. I think you would enjoy it as a sculptor. If you need information, check out my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com), and my my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com). Either way, good luck!

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan thank you and ill give it a go

  • hes saying "come at me, bro!"

  • @artguy96

Yes, that's exactly what I wanted! In the way kittens are fearless. Thank you for commenting (and subscribing).

    Take care

    Dan

  • Cute one! I wanted to ask... What is that white material that you cover them (your works) with? Is it a white cloth? And is it the same thing you make the scales for dragons from?

  • @MissUnrefined

Yes, that is white cloth dipped in white glue. I call the process "cloth mache" . If you are interested in the process, check out my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com) to see pieces being built with commentary.

    Take care

Thanks for all your nice comments.

  • you can also get BLACK INK that is similar to watering down paint, often used for painting miniatures such as war hammer. great video

  • @jobrienphotographer

Thank you for the comment and the suggestion! I really appreciate it.

    Dan

  • i could never make thaat in a million years

LOL its like "get away cat im trying to work!"

  • @MrFantasyfan123

But of course you could make one of these, maybe not on your first try. But with practice, yes, you could. I have lots of practice. That's the only difference between me and you.

And yes, my cats are always in the way. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

    Take care.

    Dan

  • Thanks dan i've done my dragon almost all I need to paint it but I did it with chichen wire and marbles for the eyes it looks really gd if u have a face book I can show u wbs kez x

  • Thanks dan does any shops in Edinburgh sell this black paint x

  • @Specialkiss2010

    Hi again,

It's not a special black paint. It's just any black paint that you add water to. Any water based paint will work.

    Good luck.

    Dan

  • And how much is it plz x

  • @Specialkiss2010

    Hey there,

This is part of a three piece art project, two babies and the mother. You should make one for yourself. You could do it.

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

  • Hi dan it's kez can u tell me wats the black stuff u use and where do u get it wbs kez x

  • @Specialkiss2010

The black is just paint that is watered down. I paint it on and then wipe it off before it dries. I call the process, "blackwashing."

    Dan

  • These are all great, really inspiring. May I ask what you use to protect the teeth/claws/taxidermy eyes when you paint? And it looks like you use a different material for wings & scales/details - what is that?

  • @ErinTalamasca

    Hello Erin,

I use Fimo for teeth and claws. I just paint over them with latex paint (the water based, all purpose paint I use) and then scrape it off when I'm done. I use a little water to loosen it up first.

My final "skin" is cloth ) old bed sheets dipped in white glue. That is what I use for scales etc.

    Take care

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

  • @DanMonsterMan

Thank you! Really appreciate the info, you woke my creative side up again :)

  • @ErinTalamasca

I'm glad to help. Good luck to you.

    Dan

  • how many hours does this take you

  • @30958ian

Hi there. I always try to time myself, and I always give up. This is three projects of course, two babies and a mom. It took a long time.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

I have instructional videos on my blog if you are interested, PaperMacheBlog (dot com). Give it a try.

    Dan

  • wow amazing i admire you work were did you learn to do this

  • @helljumperodst1

Thank you for the nice comment. How I learned? I started with a project like I remembered making as a kid, but over time tweeked the process and invented a few enhancements. This is much the story for people who do "paper mache". Seems to encompass a wide range of techniques, which is one of the reasons I like it so much.

    Take care

    Dan

  • thats ok, i use it too

  • Awwww how cuteee =)

  • @sk8erkid2007

Thank you for the very nice comment.

    Dan

  • Hey Dan,

Did you use windows movie maker for your projects?

    Aaron

  • @TheHALLOOON

Yes, I'm pretty low tech. I do use movie maker.

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan Who cares how techy you are? Your awsome at paper mache! Keep it up!

  • when u do the wings wat do u use 4 them (the skin wings).

  • @11funnydude

I use cloth (old bed sheets) dipped into glue for the wings.

    Dan

  • how cuuuute....love this little baby :D

  • @CYBERQUEEN01

Thank you. It was fun making these two little guys (or girls) to go with the mom.

    Dan

  • i showed my little boy your videos he thinks you are amazing and wanted to know if you could make a black dragon next time you make a video because black dragons are his favourite lol

  • @Juliapark01

I hate to say this, but I'm making a video right now of an albino dragon, pretty much the exact opposite. Sorry. But maybe someday a black dragon. I'm afraid that it wouldn't photograph very well however. Still, thanks for the suggestions.

    Dan

  • how hard (Physically) is paper mache? would it break if one were to shoot it with an airsoft gun?

  • @TheMorningshadows

This has got to be one of the most interesting comments I've every received. The paper mache techniques I use are very durable, much more that traditional paper mache. I use cloth and glue as a skin which make the pieces very strong. Now, I'm not sure what an airsoft gun is, so I don't know if it would penetrate one of my projects. Most guns probably would. But it would make a hole. It would not "break".

I don't know if that helps.

    Take care

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan An airsoft gun is a gun that shoots little platic pellets at around 100-500 feet per second. They come in 5 different types. Gas opperated, Spring, AEG, AEP (both AEG and AEP are electric) and CO2. They are often used to have "Airsoft Wars". The most they can do to skin is leave a small welt, if it hits bare skin or through a light shirt. Most people wear protective gear, but can still easily feel the pellet.

  • this is amazing, my littlle boy is totally obsessed with dragons i would love to make this for him, he would love it!! but your video is so fast how do i slow it down and what materials are you using? by the way you are very talented all your stuff is amazing

  • @Juliapark01

Hi there. I'm glad you like the dragon. I'm all about helping people make their own paper mache. I sell how-to books and have slower instructional videos. Check out my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) and my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com) if you are interested. Thank you for the nice comment.

    Dan

  • you do an amazing work, where do you get the eyes for your proyects?

  • @oton0702

Thank you for the nice comment. Many times I get eyes from taxidermist companies. I find them on line. If you ever want a particular company, send me a note, dan at GourmetPaperMache (dot com).

    Take care

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan

You know, i Think it's good of you to just answer these questions. Most of the time pepole like this just say "Buy my stuff to find out." But you're actualy nice enough to just answer questions. Another point for dan!

  • @ghostboy777

Why thanks again! I really do want people using this medium. It's just an under rated, under utilized art form

    Everyone should be doing this.

    Take care

    Dan

  • That was incredible!!

  • @AngusHuntz

Thank you so much for your kind comment!

i couldent make that one u r great:)

  • Thank you so much for your nice comment!

    Dan

  • ow your welcome, poeple with a talent like you have deserf a nice comment ;)

  • the closest thing iv done with papier mache is a heart for valentines day as a decoration your work is so good! about how long does it a take to create your art?

  • It depends upon the piece of course. A couple weeks for a dragon. But that isn't working non stop. That's working a few hours and then letting it dry.

  • This has really inspired me! Your little monster is beautiful!

  • Well thank you! I appreciate the kind words.

It is actually quite a cute set in person. The two "kitten" like dragons and the mom (scratching her ear like a cat). The all work well together.

    Take care

    Dan

  • Hi Dan - I LOVE your videos! I've got an Art Club and the students have designed some really quirky Fantasy animals...we WERE going to make them from clay...but...guess what?!

  • Hi Jude. Nice to meet you. I wish you well on your project. I know how much work it is to run this kind of club. Let me know if I can answer any questions along the way.

    Good luck!

    Dan

PS. Thanks for the kind words about my art work. I really appreciate it.

  • Very motivating, thanks for sharing all your videos.

  • You are welcome. Thanks for watching!

    Dan

  • You are so talented, Brilliant!!

  • Well, thank you! What a nice comment! You made my night.

    Dan

  • what cloth u used

  • I use old bed sheets torn up. Cotton is best. The older the better.

    Dan

  • haha the cat

  • Yes, that was Eddy. I have three cats. They are always underfoot. They seem to end up in all of my videos. Check out my new one. "Papier Mache Head (for the Carpool Lane". You'll see Max, my Bengal.

    Thanks

    Dan

  • Your stuff is awesome!! What type of glue mixture do you use? I know there are several options...I'm guessing watered down elmers glue?

  • Thanks for your nice comment. I use plain old flour and water for the first paper mache stage. I put a "skin" of cloth dipped into Elmer's glue after I sculpt. If you are interested, I have a blog with slower, instructional videos. So far I only have an introduction and two lessons, but will add more over time. It's at PaperMacheMan (dot com).

    Take care

    Dan

  • Good to know, I was currently thinking the same thing, I'm using 1part flour 1 part starch, 1/2 part white gezzo primar and water. The white primer makes it stay together rather well but the starch and flour make it crack a lot, probably from the starch. I'll send you some pics of the project when its finished, after this though a dragon is looking rather temping to make.

  • That formula sounds interesting. It's amazing how many different formulas there are out in paper mache land. Everyone has a favorite.

    I'd love to see photos.

    Take care.

    Dan

  • good work! what do you make the teeth with? at first I thought youwere rolling up tape, but then I see you scrape them at the end so it has to be something harder than tape. and the white material you put on for final coat, that is cloth, isn't it?.

  • In this case I was using a plastic material called, "Fimo" for the teeth. There are other brands too, "Supersculpy". You mold then bake in the oven. The white material is cloth dipped in glue. You can get more information on my site PapierMacheMonsters (dot com). Also, I have a blog where I post slower, instructional videos if you are interested at, PaperMacheMan (dot com). Thanks and take care.

    Dan

  • you could sell theses on ebay

  • Hi there.

I've sold many in fairs and galleries. I'm not sure I'd want to do it on ebay.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Dan

  • wat a fine piece of art u got there really interesting

    very creative good job

  • Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words. I hope you enjoy my other videos as well.

    Take care

    Dan

  • that is cool! you should sell those on etsy. ;)

oh and the cat fight was a hoot! :)

  • Thank you for the nice comment. Yes, my cat Eddy likes to play with anything that moves.

    Take care

    Dan

  • That's very nice of you to say. And yes, Eddy loves to bite my brush.

    Take care.

    Dan

  • at 0:31 what paper is that is that regular paper just dipped in paste?

  • Hey there,

Actually, at 0:31 it is just phone book paper twisted around pieces of wire clothes hanger and then masking tape wrapped around that. Are you sure you meant 0:31?

    Dan

  • well like on most of ur vids there like a layer that very smooth and a bit yellow

  • and its not only at 0:31

  • That stuff is just strips of masking tape. That's how I hold the pieces together.

  • No thank you! You have inspired me to try to go further into art rather than playing original games all day!

  • Wow, that is even a nicer compliment than before. Thanks again. Good luck on gaming or your art.

    Dan

  • Is the yellow material ur using all over ur artwork tape?

  • Yes, just masking tape.

    Dan

  • 2:49 ehehahah ur playing with that cat lol!

  • Yes, that was Eddy. He is always underfoot. I used to edit him (and my other cat Max) out, but I later decided if he wants to be famous that badly, why not?

    Take care.

    Dan

  • Just beautiful! If I may ask: what do you use to make the teeth? :)

  • Why thank you! I appreciate the kind words. In this project I used a material called "Fimo". It is a plastic clay that you mold then put in the oven for a while. You can get it at any hobby store. There are other similar products, different brands, like "supersculpy".

    Take care.

    Dan

  • I love your videos. Did you mention in one of your postings that you also have a book? I'd like to know the name so I can look for it. Thanks for sharing your awesome talent. Not the kind of paiper mache I learned in school. LOL

  • Hi a girl,

Thank you for your nice words. Yes, my new book is called "Paper Mache Monsters". You should be able to get it in bookstores around the US. For more information, go to my site. (I can't write it here or this won't post. It's the title of the book, all one word, dot , you know what. )

    Dan

  • ive seen almost all of your videos out and i can only say 2 words. you're amazing. wish i had the patience to do this.ah well nice work.

    PaperMacheMan

  • Hey TL. Thank you so much for your very nice comment! I truly appreciate it. It's great that you have started working with this medium. Make no mistake about it, your work will be terrific. It will be different than mine, but just as nice. You will love your pieces, like your cat. I have two Abbys. Eddy, the young crazy one, is in most of my videos. Always underfoot. The older one is too lazy to play with the paper. I also have a Bengal, Max. who stars in my latest.

    Thanks!

    D

  • You are an amazing artist and so incredibly kind to everyone who has commented on your work. I have just started exploring paper mache and hoe to one day work up to the caliber of your work...but I feel none shall compare to your masterpieces!

Also! You have WONDERFUL tastes in cats! I have an Abby as well and he is the most loveable creature on Gods good Earth! :)

Thank you so much for sharing your work with us all! It is a joy to watch!

    -TL

  • Hey this is Sarah here and I was wondering if u would ever consider doing a paper mache tutorial, going through the steps of your technique??

I think it will help with a project i have in mind to do.

And i was also wondering what material did u use to finish d wings??

It seems very easy to use and it seems to adjust to the shapes of the sculpture very well.

Thanks for your video and i hope you can get back to this comment.

  • The wings are draped cloth dipped into white glue. I then paint them with latex paints which gives them the feel of leather.

  • thanks!

  • Amazing, sir---simply amazing. Am I correct in assuming the dark over-painting at the end of each project is a watered-down paint mixture, or is it a glaze? Whatever you use, your work is awe-inspiring. Please continue.

  • Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. Yes indeed, what I call "blackwashing" is just watered down black paint. I put in on and wipe it off before it dries. Of course I have to add back some highlights but the effect is to add depth and pull out the color.

I'm happy you like the art.

    Take care.

    Dan

  • Wow, I have been wanting to try this for a while... I think you have inspired me to jump in!!

  • That's great! You should jump in. It's a great medium. Good luck!

    Dan

  • awsome work yet again please keep em comming dan ^_^

  • Thank you again. Comments like yours makes me want to get to my next video. I appreciate it.

    Dan

  • why did you give it moogle ears?

  • I don't think these are moogle ears. But my most recent video "Parallel Paper Mache" does seem to have those kind of ears.

In both cases, it wasn't intended. Thanks for commenting.

    Dan

  • cute =)
