  • R.I.P Alpha 1

  • Admiral Petrarch said "observers saw Alpha 1 remaining behind so that others may reach the vega system. Hey! I was hitting my burners trying to get out of there.

  • THis was my first space game I had years ago. I was too one of the alpha one people who got the warning at the last min and was too far out trying to get to the jump node hitting your after burners like hell thinking...OMFG OMFG OMFG go go go go...i was a min or two late before the super nova owned my ass..no game got my heart pumping like that game did all those years ago. Good memories

  • I've always been grateful to them for this ending. It's what I (and I think everyone) got the first time 'round.

It was a great in-universe send-off for us. Not like Admiral Petrach would say "we lost the Colossus and most of our fleet... but I'd like to ignore those hundreds of thousands of deaths for a moment, to talk about a fighter pilot".

It was a believable way of making us a hero. Of making our death brave and tragic at the same time. "Because of this sacrifice... our people are safe."

  • Always preferred this one as the "true" ending to FS2. It's almost impossible to get back to the node if you didn't know about the nova anyway. Also, your predecessor from FS1 took down the Lucifer and stranded himself in Sol forever, saving all of human civilization. The least you can do is get another shipful of civilians to the Vega node.

  • I stayed behind every single time. To forfeit your life for the sake of others is always the best ending - I wouldn't have it any other way.

  • @adamant356 i prefer going down in a blaze of glory... fighting agianst the shivans til the nova hit..

  • To the officers and the crew of the GTD Aquitane: Y U NO stay and fight until death?

  • I was 3 seconds away from success! 3 seconds!!!! Why didn't it give me 3 seconds?!

  • @KriegerAurelius rofl, my ship had already entered the subspace portal fully and the portal was closing behind it when the supernova hit. I still got this ending. XP

  • Bullshit I stayed behind to protect others!!

I was spamming my afterburners to get the fuck out of there!!

  • I died as half my ship entered the jump portal.

  • I can still remember seeing the supernova timer pop up and thinking: "wait... what? ... OH SHIT RUN RUN RUN!!!"

  • Manly god damn tears.

  • This is what made the Freespace series so epic in comparison to other space titles. Very few games have managed to move me, or still move me so long after completion. It's a testament to the scale of the game, and the plotting, that it really did feel like a battle of survival, and in turn that a victory could feel so emotionally Pyrrhic - "We lost the Colussus..."...and I've never felt so helpless as the moment I watched her go down fighting.

  • Remember that freespace 2 is still alive! Look for FS2Open and enjoy it again :)

  • I dont understand why they dont make movies out of these two games?? It would be the most perfect science fiction movie ever made!!!

  • Every person in this comment section is a fucking Hero!

  • @LgndryThndr I guess definition of hero now means "Some dude who didn't reach the Jump node in time"

I know i didn't stay back to help anyone. I was simply in the middle of a fight too far in system when the warning came. "Alpha 1, there is a shockwawe from the supernova, get out of there"

Damnit, why didn't you tell me earlier?

Was pushing the afterburner furiusly and then screaming like a little girl while fried in my own cockpit.

  • @Hyeesa

Even little girls can be heroes?

  • @LgndryThndr Hey, woman can be combat pilots allready, maybe in the future children can be pilots too. :P

  • yeah "remained behind to help others"? nah alpha 1 was using dreadfull language and hitting the afterburner key hard enough to break his keyboard.

  • Alpha 1 is Master Chief's father, lol!

  • Best game cutscene ever.

It's pretty emotional for any true FreeSpace fan. And it gives the player the conclusion they deserve, which was difficult when we weren't running around as the Admiral on the Colossus. :P

  • I saw this ending first altho it wasnt fair since I was already jumping but in last 5 seconds or so and my ship was more then half way thru.

so if it was stargate it probebly jumped in time or got in to paralel universe XD

  • you died didnt you, becuase at 5 seconds the wave hit me too and 90% of my ship was in the portal lol

  • who knows if we died or not Id say we might been lucky ending up far far away :D

  • in a place with the whole shivan fleet, lol well win alpha one can take one anything, i had the persues so ill own anything that comes my way with kayser and limited missels

  • I actually cleared out all the enemies that would spawn so I made my way to the jump node and got out. I was following the transports to make sure nothing else would come but when the Supernova came, I was close enough to get the hell out.

  • good for u necrossknight, my dad played the two freespace games but he never made it into the vegas node jump point, his ship was destroyed by the supernova

  • Stayed behind so that others could reach the node? I was screaming and mashing my jump button while boosting towards that bloody node damn it!

  • @Leongkm2 LOL! I know man, I know ^^

  • This has been said over a million times: "There will NEVER be FreeSpace 3!" Interplay who OWNS the RIGHTS has said it millions of times! (those bastards!)

So abandon all hope...or create your own FreeSpace 3 MOD!

  • hooray!...wait..oh darn i only read the there will*skippes never*be Freespace 3! part

    god damn it..

  • If there's made a Freespace 3, I think the next logical step would be to attack the shivans.

  • i wont attack the shivans we have no juggernuaght and they have 80+ our fleet is in pieces litteraly

  • but maybe the fleet will be like you know...reformed and new weapons and crusiers and battleships and fighters and lazers and missales and stuff

and new plotline and storyline and battles and allies and etc etc lol XD

  • and the shivans will come out with new stuff and own us more badly this time

  • but this time the shivans might need OUR help this time

and they will like fuse shivan and terran-vasudan tech to make a lucifer class collossus or something

  • so in freespace 3 who would be the villian? cuz if that hapens ths shivans wouldnt be the enemy

  • That is such a bad idea XD

  • @henryhenriquez Never underestimate the capacity for the Shivans to come out with new stuff, trickle feed it and own us:)

  • @CmdrTobs the shivans have nothing on alpha 1. he can blow up a sathanas in seconds. kill a whole fleet in minutes. hes a god

  • Remained behind for others? I died smashing the afterburner... not exactly a martyrs sacrifice

  • sooo true...i really wanted to get the F***

    outta there lol

  • i did not want to die but it was epic fighting those seraphin and the other heavy bomber with mine persues and then noticing the timer is down to 15 seconds

  • ah yes i finally did it after 12 hours of constant restarting!

  • im guessing portecting the bastion took allot ou of you

  • it wasnt just the bastion, it was the complete fleet i had to fricken escort all the way till they jumped out

i lost all of my allies and i was stuck throwing CMs everywhere and shooting down bombers and fighters MYSELF!

and im going to add you since your a FS2 fan

  • thanks man and mine fs is glitch becuase i was 6 k away from the node and the mission ended saying i made it o0

  • you...lucky son of a bitch..

  • but i wanted to go down in flaming blaze of glory

  • hah I went down in a blaze of fricken glory!!!

    beat that you sunnuva gon!

  • flamming blaze of freaking glory best way to go down i mean i got the sathanas kill i can die happy, on another note mine sensors were screwed up and had 39 hull so yea ill go down anyways

  • then why didnt you go down????

  • the ending that a true man gets lol most of us died with our finger smashing the after burner and some us wanted to die awsome

  • I never much cared for the Ares. The Erinyes was pretty good, but truth be told I pretty much stuck exclusively with the Perseus, unless it was a mission where I could get my hands on a Horus.

  • That ending is *snif* beutyful man.

  • FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY MAKE A MOVIE!!! IT WOULD BE BETTER THAN STAR TREK OR STAR WARS!(in my mind)

  • Better than Star Wars yes.., but Star Trek...hmm...I don't know...=)

  • When I did this mission, I was so freakin close to the node when the star exploded. I was trying to save the third wave of tranports. The admiral says I stayed behind but I was really hitting the afterburners over and over and ended up dying 200 meters from the node

  • Lol that's the same thing that happened to me too. I just miss judged how far i was from the node. I was modockin to that damn jump node at the very end just didnt make it.

  • n9spooks and

    Eltrotraw

    ROFLMAO

  • Yeah, it was so emotinal, how my character died to save the lives of many. Of course first time I failed. But I tried again and just decided to stay and help the other ships.

  • You have to be in the node to jump out. Just stay close to the node around the time the last medical ships jump out.

  • At first I thought no matter what you did you would have this ending, but i tried again and made it. But I think this is a much better ending to the game

  • The first time I did it, I inexplicably believed the last transports could make it. I contemplated turning around and trying for it, but I realized I'd never make it in time, so I just went and tried to take down as many as I could.

  • What a nice and very touching ending.

"Alpha 1 remained behind so that others may have a chance..."

Or so says the Admiral Petrach in the romanticised version of the Battle of Capella.

In reality though, Alpha 1(me) was furiously pressing the jump button and cursing like no tomorrow coz it keeps saying the jump drives are "malfunctioning" or something stupid like that......

Great ending still, it made me feel a lot better when I first completed the game :D

  • Heh lol.. I tried to put all my power into the engines on my Ares but but was too far to make it... Surprised me that I finished the game instead of having to redo the mission!

  • In my case it was more like "SCREW YOU GUYS GET ME OUT OF HERE"

  • HAHAHA!

Still, the ening is a nice tribute to your "sacrifice", don't you think?

  • @n9spooks Lucky you ... i was fighting My last Bomber while the super Nova got me. :\

Amazing end btw... the thing the Admiral sayed are .... *sniff* *cryes* .. just i dont have words , FANTASTIC

  • @n9spooks same here.

  • In single player, I was never, ever able to move beyond the rank of Commodore. I played for about a year after earning that rank but I was never promoted past that. Anyone else ever do it, and if so, how long did it take or do you think you did anything different to trigger it?

  • Get more points. Basically try to kill more stuff and keep more of your wingmates alive.

  • Looking at the rank.tbl files from Freespace 1 and Freespace 2 I can say it is much, much harder to obtain the rank simply because you need a higher score to get the ranks. I finished FS 1 campaign at Captain and FS 2 Campaign at Lt. Jr Grade, Lt. at very best... if you want to "cheat" without modifying the tabls... make a campaign mission with high score value ships and objectives... that'll ensure your rank, Admiral.

  • Thanks for the reply. A bit late, but better late than never. Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

  • hey is there like a sercet where u can b the shivans instead of the polits plz tell me =]

  • You get to fly a mara on a mission before the last one in the game. You have to complete the black ops missions.

  • @ShadowGorrat:

That things are little pieces of the moon.

  • i died 1st time and still didnt get this ending :( was a downloaded version of the game

  • The only time I actually succeeded to jump out , was when I replayed the campaign with the Velocity mod ( makes all fighters and bombers much faster , so it's harder and more fun to play ) .

And , did anyone else notice something moving from the dark side of the moon ? From 00:53 to the end of the video . It's like a ship , not the sun flare . And there's more of them , and one moved to a different position .

  • once i reached the node in time, because i stayed near there. but...my jumpdrive malfunctioned somehow and i couldn't jump. i think, you're supposed to die there. :)

  • No, you can survive, I did it as you did - by fleeing long before the supernova-

  • actually it sometimes is so you have to die there i mean they call you for back up at the lambda transports and they are like 6km away and they they tell you that the sun is going supernove in 1 min so yea screwed

  • No, what I said was if you flee before the supernova -Ie you know it will happen- it is possible to make it out, although you will sacrifice about half the transports to do so

  • I actually prefer this ending to the other one, because it has more emotional impact.

  • you know why allot of people get this ending is becuase we are 6km away from th dammed node when they warn you and even with an perseus you wont get there on time becuase it takes about 10 seconds for the subspace drive to word and at 55 seonds after the wearning the supernova hits you bs!!!!!!!!

  • what you do is divert all your energy to you engines and keep afterburning. i did it 8km away in a myrmadon

  • The first time this happened to me, my ship was entering subspace. I thought i would have to restart the mission.

  • very nice end, but

IM FUKING PISSED, I TRIED THAT MISION MANYTIMES, TO MAKE ALL MY WING JUMP WITH ME ON THE NODE, AND I DIED??!!! HOLLY CRAP

  • crap i keep getting this ending not a good sigh better become a better fighter pilot or smash the after burner button or stay close to the node

  • I get so foggy eyed watching this one...

  • Cool to see the end of this series, never got to play freespace2 though. I think it would translate well into a movie with the right talent and spirit producing it.. better than the blah starwars

  • "Alpha 1 remained behind so others could reach the node."

Ha. I had my thumb mashed on the burners trying to get the hell out of there!

  • Same here!

  • How were we supposed to know that the last few ships needing escort are a lost cause? They don't warn you in enough time about the supernova. I think that once you go to try to rescue those ships, you're toast because they're so far away from the node.

  • Actually, I did stay behind to shoot down the remaining bombers. Though that might be because I didn't see the timer until there was 10s left.

  • well i decited to take down as many ships as posible to avange the colossus but in the end i suppose it didn't even matter since i was blow to ingdom kong by that big explosion

  • I got this ending when I beat it

    its tight

  • I remember when this happened to me, I played through and decided to stay behind defending some slow moving tub from fighters - after the explosion I was gutted because it had been a hard mission to play, but the Admiral's kind words made me feel better for it. Quality.

  • well the admiral kind words make me feel as if i did all that work for nothing since i died and we have lost so mucht in the war

  • Just finished the game with this ending. Rather enigmatic.

  • This is a kind of moment I hardly see anymore in movies or games which brings me to this point: When I hopfully become a moviemaker in the future, I am planning on making these two games into feature films. If anyone thinks this is a good or bad idea, let me know.

  • hear hear!

  • Given that there's no FS3, this is where the games ends for me. Superb ending. You don't get endings of this calibre these days.

  • I think something's wrong with my version of the game - even if you stick close to the node and try to get out, it just lets the supernova blast you to smithereens anyway. Humph.

  • I like this ending more. It has such a bittersweet feeling.

  • actually I stopped my engines and just looked at the sun... and went : "oooooooooooooooooooohhhh Shinyyyyyyyyyyy"

  • first time i played that mission i just looked at the star and just kinda stared and went "Stupid Shivans" lol

  • hahaha. Yeah.. like.. that dude in the car in Independence Day goin... "holy crap" before he gets creamed by a flattened car during the explosion.

  • The guy speeaking was in Independence Day

  • He played the General who acompanies Bill pullman

  • It is Robert Loggia - check him out on IMDB

  • i remember actually making that choice in the game, staying behind. but it was probably cause i saw how far the node was and just said screw it

  • I decided that since i was going to go, i'd go down fighting

  • I'm just glad I wasn't piloting one of the cruisers, no chance of making it.

  • it's an honorable death.

  • All is "how you check out. Do you want it on your feet? Or on your fuckin' knees... begging?" --> Dillan, Alien 3

  • Or maybe Alpha 1 was too far away from the node and could not make it back even with all power to engines and constant usage of afterburners dammit all.

  • Fixed!

  • well you shouldn't have gone that far away from the main fleet or did what i did attack till your ship is shreded to pieces
