Admiral Petrarch said "observers saw Alpha 1 remaining behind so that others may reach the vega system. Hey! I was hitting my burners trying to get out of there.
THis was my first space game I had years ago. I was too one of the alpha one people who got the warning at the last min and was too far out trying to get to the jump node hitting your after burners like hell thinking...OMFG OMFG OMFG go go go go...i was a min or two late before the super nova owned my ass..no game got my heart pumping like that game did all those years ago. Good memories
I've always been grateful to them for this ending. It's what I (and I think everyone) got the first time 'round.
It was a great in-universe send-off for us. Not like Admiral Petrach would say "we lost the Colossus and most of our fleet... but I'd like to ignore those hundreds of thousands of deaths for a moment, to talk about a fighter pilot".
It was a believable way of making us a hero. Of making our death brave and tragic at the same time. "Because of this sacrifice... our people are safe."
Always preferred this one as the "true" ending to FS2. It's almost impossible to get back to the node if you didn't know about the nova anyway. Also, your predecessor from FS1 took down the Lucifer and stranded himself in Sol forever, saving all of human civilization. The least you can do is get another shipful of civilians to the Vega node.
@KriegerAurelius rofl, my ship had already entered the subspace portal fully and the portal was closing behind it when the supernova hit. I still got this ending. XP
This is what made the Freespace series so epic in comparison to other space titles. Very few games have managed to move me, or still move me so long after completion. It's a testament to the scale of the game, and the plotting, that it really did feel like a battle of survival, and in turn that a victory could feel so emotionally Pyrrhic - "We lost the Colussus..."...and I've never felt so helpless as the moment I watched her go down fighting.
@LgndryThndr I guess definition of hero now means "Some dude who didn't reach the Jump node in time"
I know i didn't stay back to help anyone. I was simply in the middle of a fight too far in system when the warning came. "Alpha 1, there is a shockwawe from the supernova, get out of there"
Damnit, why didn't you tell me earlier?
Was pushing the afterburner furiusly and then screaming like a little girl while fried in my own cockpit.
It's pretty emotional for any true FreeSpace fan. And it gives the player the conclusion they deserve, which was difficult when we weren't running around as the Admiral on the Colossus. :P
in a place with the whole shivan fleet, lol well win alpha one can take one anything, i had the persues so ill own anything that comes my way with kayser and limited missels
I actually cleared out all the enemies that would spawn so I made my way to the jump node and got out. I was following the transports to make sure nothing else would come but when the Supernova came, I was close enough to get the hell out.
good for u necrossknight, my dad played the two freespace games but he never made it into the vegas node jump point, his ship was destroyed by the supernova
This has been said over a million times: "There will NEVER be FreeSpace 3!" Interplay who OWNS the RIGHTS has said it millions of times! (those bastards!)
So abandon all hope...or create your own FreeSpace 3 MOD!
i did not want to die but it was epic fighting those seraphin and the other heavy bomber with mine persues and then noticing the timer is down to 15 seconds
flamming blaze of freaking glory best way to go down i mean i got the sathanas kill i can die happy, on another note mine sensors were screwed up and had 39 hull so yea ill go down anyways
I never much cared for the Ares. The Erinyes was pretty good, but truth be told I pretty much stuck exclusively with the Perseus, unless it was a mission where I could get my hands on a Horus.
When I did this mission, I was so freakin close to the node when the star exploded. I was trying to save the third wave of tranports. The admiral says I stayed behind but I was really hitting the afterburners over and over and ended up dying 200 meters from the node
Lol that's the same thing that happened to me too. I just miss judged how far i was from the node. I was modockin to that damn jump node at the very end just didnt make it.
On my first final mission run, I was in a fight when the message hit the radio. After clearing the immediate threats, I routed all energy to the engine and started falling back. It didn't take long to realize I was simply out of time. So, I returned to the battle. The star's explosion found me fighting the Shivans.
Yeah, it was so emotinal, how my character died to save the lives of many. Of course first time I failed. But I tried again and just decided to stay and help the other ships.
At first I thought no matter what you did you would have this ending, but i tried again and made it. But I think this is a much better ending to the game
The first time I did it, I inexplicably believed the last transports could make it. I contemplated turning around and trying for it, but I realized I'd never make it in time, so I just went and tried to take down as many as I could.
"Alpha 1 remained behind so that others may have a chance..."
Or so says the Admiral Petrach in the romanticised version of the Battle of Capella.
In reality though, Alpha 1(me) was furiously pressing the jump button and cursing like no tomorrow coz it keeps saying the jump drives are "malfunctioning" or something stupid like that......
Great ending still, it made me feel a lot better when I first completed the game :D
Heh lol.. I tried to put all my power into the engines on my Ares but but was too far to make it... Surprised me that I finished the game instead of having to redo the mission!
In single player, I was never, ever able to move beyond the rank of Commodore. I played for about a year after earning that rank but I was never promoted past that. Anyone else ever do it, and if so, how long did it take or do you think you did anything different to trigger it?
Looking at the rank.tbl files from Freespace 1 and Freespace 2 I can say it is much, much harder to obtain the rank simply because you need a higher score to get the ranks. I finished FS 1 campaign at Captain and FS 2 Campaign at Lt. Jr Grade, Lt. at very best... if you want to "cheat" without modifying the tabls... make a campaign mission with high score value ships and objectives... that'll ensure your rank, Admiral.

once i reached the node in time, because i stayed near there. but...my jumpdrive malfunctioned somehow and i couldn't jump. i think, you're supposed to die there. :)

No, what I said was if you flee before the supernova -Ie you know it will happen- it is possible to make it out, although you will sacrifice about half the transports to do so
you know why allot of people get this ending is becuase we are 6km away from th dammed node when they warn you and even with an perseus you wont get there on time becuase it takes about 10 seconds for the subspace drive to word and at 55 seonds after the wearning the supernova hits you bs!!!!!!!!
