The problem is that a good portion of california students are snobs from the city that think they're above rural medicine. I lived in san francisco for 18 years, I know what these students are thinking, and it's very closed-minded to not try and branch out into rural communities.
I practice rural medicine. In my town 11 kids graduated from med school in the past 15 years. Not one went into primary care. Income is the main reason. If a radiologist who works 40 hours a week makes 4 times more than a family doc working 80 hours, it doesn't take a genius to figure out why there are no family docs anymore ( this NOT exagerration). The government decides who gets paid what, and they need to pay primary docs on par with other specialties.
