  • John Mayer will sound like John Mayer if he was playing a plastic guitar through a stack of Kelloggs Cornflakes.

  • He makes me go and pick up my electric guitar whenever i see a video like this! He really is obsessed with music, it's infinitely inspiring.

  • makes you wanna play ....

  • Bravo ..

  • 1:44 He got an eargasm x)

  • @ClassicCollege i think he was acknowledging that he was messing up

  • Im pretty sure the pups in this are custom wound but they do sound like underwound texas specials if that makes sense

  • @Danklin24 big dipper ones only to his custom strat cant buy em stock

  • @Danklin24 You're on the right path. The big dippers are actually based on the texas specials

  • I love JM

  • sound from his hand not guitar any standard guitar can do

  • I like at the very end when he smiles like "Did you just see the shit I did?"

  • Nice.

  • why the fuck did he go to berkley if hes just gonna do these srv licks

  • @RobbieMacIntyre Well he did drop out after two semesters.

  • he should create a white one that is worn like that!

  • song*

  • What is the wong he plays at :37?? i loooove that riff!

  • i used to hate jm.... but in fact is very talented... he really caught me with that sow were he copies the style of his biggest influences,.. he knows about music.

  • @hungerstriker27 same thing here

  • @BludySkinz

what? the show where he copies styles or the fact he always plays through his dumble?

  • @hungerstriker27 the fact that he knows how to play a guitar mayne !

  • @BludySkinz

yes. I like blues. But i wouldnt be able to play a distinctive lick of buddy guy and then albert king, and then srv.... the part where he plays licks of hendrix is great

  • firsy of all... i accept he has a great tone... but, play always through a dumble amplifier really helps... it´s probably the bet tube amp ever made. and i´m not saying he hasn´t a great tone,,, but you have people like dereck trucks. he can take a std sg, right from the store, plug it to any amp and get an amazing tone.l i saw that in tv actually.

  • @hungerstriker27 You should see the jam with Mayer and Tomo Fujita at berklee. He played a standard fender hot rod deluxe, and he still sounds the same. Well, you can here slight difference, but you would no matter who played

  • John Mayer really knows how to acheive that John Mayer tone.

Idiotic, unoriginal jokes we meet again. Man, youtube is full of posers.

  • GOD

  • his messing around is better than anyone i've seen practicing for years

  • @anyday82 No surprise cuz hes a pro...

and he played guitar more than yrs..

  • if i had a dollar for every pixel in this video, i would have 25cents

  • @FannyEssen1 E7 mate

  • @johnzermusic Hell yeah! :P

  • if i had a dollar for every pixel in this video, i would have 1 dollar.

  • @mayerfan09 You don't have to SEE JM to HEAR JM.

  • @mayerfan09 if i had a dollar for every comment like this i read id have like 20 dollar... so pls people stop ripping off funny comments

  • @OriginalSliz you know dude....its just a comment

  • @mayerfan09 Brafuckingvo!!! LOL my exact thought

  • @mayerfan09 ahahaah its been A LONG TIME since i loughed my ass that hardly off :D

  • @flownomis i always try my hardest ;)

  • che suono sto ferro !

  • Does he switch into a jam based on" I'm gonna find another you" near the end there

  • @minidaab ... in his fingers, and is amp and eq ...

  • srv licks

  • i Just Died cause i saw the tittle..John Mayer Gravity style blues "Jam on his Black one"

  • @christianraccstar Hahahaha

  • Indeed no big dippers, special wound cs pickups and only the wounder knows exactly what kind of pickup it is so creating the exact same pickup will be impossible :)

  • listening to him play, it gives me comfort to know even a guitar player of his quality messes up.

  • Damn him lol i think most people would second this notion on a pure jealousy scale.

  • Always fun to watch the magic comes out of his hands. I could prolly just watch him muted just to see his hands . Great players have this kinda assurance in their hands and u can see their hands just kinda lock into the perfect position. I agree with those who say that the true guitar tone is in the hands. My advice is stick to an acoustic which eliminates excuses like "can't find that tone on my amp" and all those feelings that your guitar rig is physically missing something to keep you ur best

  • i wish i could play like him.. amazing

  • People dammit, it's not all about equipment, yeah it helps, but for god sakes try and mess around with your current setups. I have a stupid little practice amp at home, and my Fender, but with abit of adjusting you can get a real nice sound that isn't EXACTLY like Johns, but close. You sound so helpless, willing to spend thousands of bucks... someone is probably gonna hate this, but you would do yourself a favor to learn your equipment better, makes you a better musician in the long run

  • his tone is unreal

  • what pickup does john mayer use for this guitar? anyone? customshop 54,69,fat 50s?

  • @HummingbirdGuitar big dippers

  • @xitongzou

got a fat 50's at neck position and a customshop 69 at middle position

they are doin' a great job!

  • @xitongzou on this guitar they're not Big Dippers, I believe he wound them himself when he built the guitar. His signature strats have Big Dippers though.

  • @xitongzou actually. he doesnt use big dippers on his black1. his pups in the black1 are a secret. the big dippers are on the production line models of his strat

  • @xitongzou Actually, they're not big dippers. The pickups he uses on this guitar were custom wound at the Fender custom shop. There's no specs available.

  • @xitongzou This guitar doesn't have big dippers.

  • @Muso992 What does it have?

  • @phatfieldguitar They were custom-wound when he had it made. Only the guy who wound them would know the settings for sure...

  • @HummingbirdGuitar hes not using big dippers for this one.

think that was in the strats before this.

i searched on forums a little and the best they could come up with was some kind of hand wound custom deal.

its low output stuff, similar to big dippers anyways.

  • @MiniDaab John Mayer never used the big dippers, it's a myth. First the used Texas Specials in the SRV Strat. Those pickups were made to replicate his sound, but the sound came first.

  • @MadddSkillzzz It says on the fender website that the big dippers are in this guitar. or am i misreading?

  • @daliksheppy No you are not. The Big Dippers are in his signature guitar, but not in "his guitar". They are just replicas of his original pickups made by Fender, good replicas. The Black 1 is completely custom built, pickups are also one of a kind.

  • @MadddSkillzzz Ah! Sweet!

  • @daliksheppy Oh yes. His original Black One is amazing.

  • @HummingbirdGuitar John Cruz custom wound pickups in the Black One. Big Dippers are replicas made by Fender, he doesn't use them.

  • @HummingbirdGuitar he doesnt really use the big dippers. thats wats in his signature, not "his" black1 strat

  • @HummingbirdGuitar I know this was months ago, but they are custom big dipper pickups. They lighten up the mids. I think you can order them from fender.

  • time and time again, this guy jus continues to inspire me to keep playing guitar even though i have sweaty hands and its hard sometimes.

  • god damn, that guitar sounds good. what amp is he working with in this vid?

  • @thenakedbuffalo Two Rock Opal I think. Nothing really special about the guitar actually... it's partly because he fingerpicks the notes, so it sounds mellower. Get some vintage output pickups, a clean boost and a clean amp like Fender or Victoria and you'll sound similar without spending the 20k on the Black1 replica + Two rock.

  • @xitongzou ah word. i'm on a vintage Fender Twin and with a bit of reverb i get a very similar sound.

  • @xitongzou

I doubt you would even know.

  • @xitongzou thats like saying all strats sound the same.

of course the guitar is special.

i have yet to see the person on youtube that absolutely nails john mayers tone and ive seen a lot youtube guitarists.

ok, nobody owns a steel string singer, but the guitar isnt less important.

john uses about 3 strats live, constantly, because they sound different.

montery pop = for waiting on the world to change, gold top = for vultures and so the black one has its place to.

  • @MiniDaab You won't find the person on youtube that absolutely nails his tone because there's only one John Mayer. And no, guitar isn't that important. Tone is in the fingers.

  • @xitongzou i disagree but respect your opinion.

  • @xitongzou

QFT. John Mayer would sound just as good with a Squier and cheap $30 amp.

  • @xitongzou That's a pretty ignorant thing to say, the tone originates from the guitar. Amps, pedals, mics etc just accentuate different parts of a guitar. some amps accentuate the bell sound, some the mellow sound( tube amps mainly)

  • @xitongzou lol do you even play guitar? if you do then you should know everything affects tone, pickups, the strings, the way the string is strung, the wood of the guitar, wether its a full body or 2 pieces, yes his finger style has its place in the sound but so does everything else about a guitar lol

  • @MrHomieslice24 Everything affects tone. However, the things you listed affect it very little compared to the amplifier and fingers.

  • @xitongzou lol "fingers" your talking about is referred to as style lol and nothing affects "very little" because if he had different strings or he strung his guitar wrong or even if he had fret ware different pickups if he changed anything he wouldnt have that tone, yeah the amplifier is a big part, but tone is always 2 parts, the guitar and the amp, if it was truely very little compared to amp then people would spend years customizing their amps instead of their guitar

  • @xitongzou agreed.. give a great player a bad guitar and he'll still sound fine.. give a great guitar to a lame-ass guitar player and he'll still suck..

  • @xitongzou tone isn't in the fingers...style is though, and it's hard to mimic john's playing cause he's so damn good!! if you bought his exact set up you could have his tone...doesn't mean you'll be able to play like him though! :)

  • @conneradams Tone is in the fingers but I appreciate the try.

  • @conneradams no. the fingers have a lot to do with the tone. that's why the same player can sound similar on totally different equipmnent. you'd be really surprised when you plugged into his gear and sounded nothing like him.

  • @xitongzou I bet i could come pretty close to his tone...

  • @xitongzou yeah most of it.... a good musician can make a crapy guitar sound great...

but with a great guitar and an great amp.... the tone is much better :D

the mix of both is the secret of the tone :D

  • @MiniDaab of course nobody's nailed his tone, only john mayer can sound like john mayer.

  • @banazo00 of course, but do you think he might as well just use 1 guitar for a whole show since they all sound the same any way?

  • @MiniDaab john is great but he's no srv

  • @dreamsofnashville1 who was talking about srv?

  • @xitongzou You can see the Dumble in the back there. A steel string singer.

  • @xitongzou absolutely correct: listen to mark knopfler and what he does with his fingerpicking style. every note is a treasure.

  • @thenakedbuffalo its in the hands dumbass.... when will you learn... that its about working your hand till it hurts.... by practising blues phrases... from bb king albert king and buddy guy.... just little pieces... then you put it together..... and thats a blues lead solo....

  • @codehendrix lolll you aren't kidding?

  • @codehendrix enough ellipses' there buddy?

  • @maximusrvb what does that even mean?

  • @codehendrix all the (...)

  • @maximusrvb dont be racist...

  • @codehendrix There was no racial slur even inferred. Also stop using all those fucking ellipses at the end of a sentence. Just a full stop. Thats it.

  • @maximusrvb since your slow ill put it this way..... dont discriminate against elipses.....

  • @codehendrix ..... and yes I do come from the land of the

    .... ellipses....

  • @thenakedbuffalo they aren't big dippers, and it isnt an opal. its a dumble SSS, and you can't buy them. When they are for sale, they cost as much as house.

  • @thenakedbuffalo he is using a Dumble Steel String Singer or (SSS)

  • Awesome video!!!!!!!!!!! Tone Soul everything is great.

  • That's so cool, he plays the start of his break he plays on Jonathan Carr's Song.

Such a lucky man to have Mayer play on your first single

  • where does that footage come from?

    thanks, great vid.

  • @DavidGrando The DVD that came with the custom shop black1

  • @xitongzou thanks, that's what I thought ;)

is there more interesting stuff on it? I wish someone would upload the full thing, must be amazing.

  • @DavidGrando People did already, just search for 'john mayer black one story'

  • @xitongzou thanks!

  • i wish i'd started playing when i was like 4 so i'd be really good now

  • just think of all the time he's played that guitar at concerts alone...
