I think he plays with his own sense of inner Zen (maybe not in the traditional way, but his own spirit). If you look at his face and posture you can tell he is feeling his music.

I understand the evolution of how an instrument may be played and what style it may be applied to, but in my personal opinion I'm not particularly fond of this man's shakuhachi playing. He is undoubtedly very skilled, nonetheless.
