you can;t find something like... gaming colleges in my country, but I have few 3d models and I'm working on a video game, a RPG for my portofolio. after that... God help me...
College degree my ass. As long as you have a strong portfolio and know 3d programs like 3d Max and popular game engines like UDK Unity or CryEngine 3 you have a strong possibility of getting hired somewhere. This degree stuff is bullshit.
@wolfengheist Gaming industries don't look at degrees to see that you have spent money and went had specific "training" in your course. They look at your degree to see that you have commited yourself to a certain goal, and that you have finished your goal. It's so easy starting up an idea with a game, and when you're half-way through, you may have a new project in your mind. Gaming industries always look at completing a project all the way through, instead of stopping mid-way.
@wolfengheist You're mostly right - a degree can simply be a means to learn 3DS Max and art apps. Obviously it's an indication and what it all comes down to is talent, which is best demonstrated in a portfolio or a mod or something.
@wolfengheist Heh, there's no need to tell me, I'm already in the industry. :) The game design courses are like those QA ones I see - they're wholly unnecessary.
For the life of me I cannot find a single sole in this industry to talk to... I'm almost done getting a degree in physics (minors in computer science and math), know how to program (C, C++, Mat-Lab, Mathematica), and have had a few minor published artworks...
if a job cant be found out of school, we shouldnt cast worry and anger about that or anything in this life.Mathew 6:33 says "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." SO Christ says store your treasure in heaven as thats the promised place we go when we recieve Christ as lord and savior living our lives for GODs will.as a career may or may not come, death surely will any time and after that follows the judgment of GOD to heaven or hell
If anyone wants a head start in programming (you'll need this info) buy a book on C++, C#, basically any type of computer language book and try to get acquainted with all of them. Create projects with a team, and by yourself to prove your worth. Basically anything you create make it represent you. I am almost out of highschool and I wish I would've taken these step a long time ago. I wish everyone good luck learning.
They are all correct, I got an internship for one of the gaming industry (Age 17; not saying name). All i showed them is my portfolio and my knowledge i know how gaming. I am not a gamer myself, but i prove to them with my dedication and imagination, I can help their industry. Btw, a strong portfolio is better than any doctred degree or any other degree if you trying to get a job in a gaming industry.
peace out
(most industry work with maya program nothing else!)
what did the guy at 4:30 approx say go for something he said. I want to design my onwn games in future but want to break in first. Comuter science is option I have to take I guess even though designing is my passion
The most succesful people in the gaming industry are self-taught and not some snotty little fan boy with a degree on a peice of paper saying he can wipe his ass without help. By the way to the comments below me, if you wanna render quicker set up a render farm that should work nicely :P
I really want to get into video game character modeling. I recently got Zbrush and I love it. Its a 3D scuplting software that designers use (Halo and others). If anyone knows about rendering 3D models and stuff like that, could you tell me what kind of computer I need so I can really work with hardcore graphics, polygons, and particles. If you know about Zbrush, what do I need to work with millions of polygons. Thanks for any help.
@AmericanFighter1212 uhh, I'll give you a short, important, and must remember for ever idea for a video game designer...
Low poly always, must have square looking polygon always, and create everything with polygons (no hair modyfer, cloth modyfer or any other high render modyfyer).
Be sure to not waste your time working on something that will not be seen up close. make sure it's very low poly, but still looks great at a distance where it will be shown.
i hope i don't have to go to some fancy college to do this. because i really want to do this as a career. i was planning to go to a tech school where they give you hands on trainning. i really want to make the worlds of games like maps for example halo and gears of war.
I would like to be on creative or a writer. I have a 2yr business degree and website with graphics and stories on it. So how can i get involve it a creative position? Any help???
some of it is true. But really, when you apply for a job in the industry, you are competing with a lot of people, (which is an understatement). I am pretty sure that they are going to take the person with more experience over the person who has none.
@kimmycheechee I can do your job better then you could lady. I know what it takes to work in the industry, i worked in it for many years. Also, I grew up playing video games and continue to play games so I could tell who is passionate about there job and the career they choose. I don't think you could say the same. In the other hand, i could be completely wrong, you probably are trained to seek the people with no life that are easy to turn into slaves.
A Game Design diploma is by far no guarantee that you'll get a job in the industry. And with a diploma like that, you're totally pigeonholed into that industry. Good luck nabbing a job outside of the industry with a 'Game Design' diploma.
This information can be very contradictory and too general. Bottom line is that the only way you'll get a job is if your experience, portfolio and resume matches the requirements of the company thats looking to fill a specific position.
yea yeah its all about passion and if you got some rich parents to send you off to college. Otherwise its all about working and trying to save for the classes to learn this shit. And by the time I learn it its out dated. IDK haha... Im just tired of videos making it seem easy and ( you just got to have passion ) shit. I got plenty of that but it hasnt got me no where sept a part time job and a 2 hour bus ride to college. -.-
I don't think you really listened...and not all of what they said is absolute fact either. It's not required that you go to school, to get a degree, to get a job in the field...although in some cases it may help. What is required is that you have talent. Granted, taking classes will help you learn what you need to know to get started...but after that it just comes down to pure talent...and the passion is to ensure that you keep improving upon that talent, and not stagnate.
Industry always makes it seem like they have all the keys
but when it comes to games that's not he case.
The industry is very myopic so my game will be great!

That may be true in some cases but in most cases they look at your portfolio first degree second. At least that's my experience.
