Did you know that for a long time until he died, Rubinstein always played a Steinway? So did Horowitz. I got to meet the man who was piano technician for both of them.
No applause probably because this etude was in a group and another one followed this one, and THEN there was applause, He took the last 3 chords too fast but in general it was fine and fast playing, and clear.
No one in the right mind would criticize Rubinstein's interpretations or his playing, and god forgive us, his technique. this man was a consummate performer for many decades.
His body of work, taken as a whole is superlative. period.
@Ansel989 i think theyre not applauding because he must have programed this along with the etude op 25 no 1 together as a set, as pianists sometimes do with short pieces, so they would have applauded after the set is complete.
i cant help notice that rubenstein's fingers are more, to me, correctly poised. horowitz and a lot of other russian pianists play with really flat fingering and its nice to see what i think its the more standard techique. of couse, horowitz play EXCEPTIONALLY too.
@sauternety36 That's one of the reasons why I don't look at the pianist and instead just listen to the music. I find that more often than not I pay too much attention to what they are doing.
today i was at an school concert. and there is this 19 year old boy. he kinda reminded me of paul potts. he looked so unsure and he sat down . and he started playing this. and everybody was like: =O
well, loveebara's point is probably that you can't regard someone who simply plays a piece of music as being equally worth of consideration as the one who wrote it. I can't but agree with that.
now horowitz and rubinstein might have been the greatest when they lived, but let us not disregard of the genuin classical composers. beethoven, mozart, rachmaninoff (who to some extent actually was contemporary with horowitz), brahms, debussy, chopin, etc. all these were masters of piano, specialised upon certain cathegories. They were all genious, all in different senses of the word.
..and who disregards them? btw, forgetting Liszt in your list is a disregard in itself;-) Bramhs and Debussy were good pianists, but certainly not at the level of their contemporary best interpreters)
i think everyones intitled to theyre own opinions. on another note.. i dont listen to this type of piano, but tonight i decided to search it up and dive into it, and i found some real diamond,. this was 1. i will keep these next to me as i venture further, and they shall always live on with me. thank you

oh ok, i see, your world consists of only positive toughts, so, if something or some one has the name to be "good" by the general public (wich is most of the time not able to hear the difference between good, medium and bad), you may not give negative critique. If the world whas like you, we had no recencent's for concert's. Maybe you are religious?
how could you say that when you have no idea who i am. And ill have you know ive critiqued videos of langlang and menuhin so your 'theory' isn't really valid. What has religion got to do with it? your reply to my comment seems to be inaccurate in that youre saying i should have negative thoughts about rubenstein, when i stated that you can't have that good input when youre puting him lower than a 'student'.

the interpreation of this particular piece in this particular concert: indeed, my opinion is that every last years student (and maybe others also) their performance will be much much much better as this one. this one is just playing the note's.
its an etude, which means study. They were written to improve ones technique. So in this case interpretation and proper style isnt as important because these were played while the player practices. opinion is opinion. i cba to argue any more..
Mr. Mombeek is well known as a *musician* of great virtue... In his opinion Richter is "bad musician" and Rubinstein is probably even worse (or slightly better?). Mr. Mombeek also a great *educator* and has a mission to convert YT music community into army of Liberace's fans. As one can see his personal musical taste is impeccable! ;)
Please correct if I'm mistaken, but I thought it was Rubinstein who once said that he did not playing Chopin etudes during his live concerts because they exposed the flaws in his technique?!?

Well, I meant for the keyboard. You can't blame Bach for not composing for the piano, since it sucked back then...

Why should we give a negative critique to a positive performance??
And why are you insist on being negative??
You simply don't hear the very simple but yet one of the best musical element inside this performance.
No matter how negatively you try to speak about this performance .. Rubinstein is still a very good and extraordinary musician.
