  • You meant to be clapping hahhhhhhhh!

  • Did you know that for a long time until he died, Rubinstein always played a Steinway? So did Horowitz. I got to meet the man who was piano technician for both of them.

  • finally GREAT PERFORMING!!!

  • He plays it so easily D: the end=omg.

  • No applause probably because this etude was in a group and another one followed this one, and THEN there was applause, He took the last 3 chords too fast but in general it was fine and fast playing, and clear.

  • why theres no applause?

  • @koopizahardstyler because he was going to play another piece

  • genial!

  • I hate that in the end of this video no one applauds him.... But I love Rubinstein! <3

  • No one in the right mind would criticize Rubinstein's interpretations or his playing, and god forgive us, his technique. this man was a consummate performer for many decades.

His body of work, taken as a whole is superlative. period.

  • look at those hands! Look at those fingers! Like butter..........so easy, so graceful so light .

  • WHY AREN'T THEY APPLAUDING ILL APPLAUD FOR THEM!

  • @Ansel989 i think theyre not applauding because he must have programed this along with the etude op 25 no 1 together as a set, as pianists sometimes do with short pieces, so they would have applauded after the set is complete.

  • Incredible playing!!!!!!!

  • Where did this take place?

  • i cant help notice that rubenstein's fingers are more, to me, correctly poised. horowitz and a lot of other russian pianists play with really flat fingering and its nice to see what i think its the more standard techique. of couse, horowitz play EXCEPTIONALLY too.

  • @sauternety36 That's one of the reasons why I don't look at the pianist and instead just listen to the music. I find that more often than not I pay too much attention to what they are doing.

  • There's no doubt that his record of the complete Chopin Etudes would have been the best.

  • it's quite tragic, isn't it? ;( of all things to omit.

  • the thin i love about Rubinstein is that no more what age he is he plays with the same passion and ability

  • It's my the favourite record

    Old, with mistakes, but favourite

  • no-one claps at the end! hahaha!

  • Maybe because they knew he was probably continue on to Etude No. 6. Just a guess.

  • the different sounds makes it sound even better than th original gb major xD

  • today i was at an school concert. and there is this 19 year old boy. he kinda reminded me of paul potts. he looked so unsure and he sat down . and he started playing this. and everybody was like: =O

    it was amazing.

  • Unexpected talent... I don't mind a shock every once in a while.

  • Wonderful!

  • well, loveebara's point is probably that you can't regard someone who simply plays a piece of music as being equally worth of consideration as the one who wrote it. I can't but agree with that.

  • *worthy

  • ..well, duh..

  • who cares, you say? ;-)

  • One thing I don't get...why was their no applause? Was he playing something after, and the audience can only clap every 10 minutes or what...

  • Amazing! Rubinstein is the king of Chopin interpretation.

  • Marvellous! I especially love what he does with the last page!

  • Look at how easily he grabs the "big 10th"

as I call it, at 1:27! Db, Cb, F in the left hand.

  • yeah yeah and my techer says "You can play this" yea yea really funny

  • omgshhh i love his playing!!! sooo pro, like scary (in a good way) =)

i rly like this piece, but i dunno how ill manage this piece cos my teacher wants me 2 do it for my l.mus.a D:

anyways yeah hes rly amazing x]

  • Lol...I heard the typical rubato Rubinstein uses every time...Still a wonderful performance by this master...

  • F@ck!!! watch his hands at the end with the octaves!!! *__* UNBELIVEBLE !!!

  • oh he was old, that genius ;)

  • And this shall remind everybody that he was also a virtuoso!

  • @voolare er... no.. it wont. sounds very sloppy -- his usual style. what are you listening at?

  • @voolare this one is not too dificult. but rubinsein also playd feux follets...

  • now horowitz and rubinstein might have been the greatest when they lived, but let us not disregard of the genuin classical composers. beethoven, mozart, rachmaninoff (who to some extent actually was contemporary with horowitz), brahms, debussy, chopin, etc. all these were masters of piano, specialised upon certain cathegories. They were all genious, all in different senses of the word.

  • ..and who disregards them? btw, forgetting Liszt in your list is a disregard in itself;-) Bramhs and Debussy were good pianists, but certainly not at the level of their contemporary best interpreters)

  • Plus, you forget the greatest of all. Bach! :)

    (That's just my opinion)

  • Bach didn't actually compose anything for piano...

  • Well, I meant for the keyboard. You can't blame Bach for not composing for the piano, since it sucked back then...

  • I thought you meant as a general componist. Now I must openly disagree with you, my favourite is still Beethoven ^^

  • Haha well that's fine, I love Beethoven too. Bach is just my personal favorite :)

Oh man, Beethoven's Appassionata sonata, the second movement especially, is sooooo beautiful...

  • Tchaikovsky is the man. Then Chopin

  • Comment removed

  • a virtual friend of mine told me, that arthur rubinstein

might have been the greatest virtuoso who ever lived...i doubted.....but when i listen to this i shall agree!:))

  • The whole etüde with him is awesome but the octaves at the end...WOW!!!!!!!

  • yeah, octaves are insane

  • @go9zu I think I just watched that one part about 20 times just now. o.o

  • ummmmhhhh,how amazing he plays! ;))

  • A treasure indeed...

  • i think everyones intitled to theyre own opinions. on another note.. i dont listen to this type of piano, but tonight i decided to search it up and dive into it, and i found some real diamond,. this was 1. i will keep these next to me as i venture further, and they shall always live on with me. thank you

  • Such a genius!!!

Each note was like a pure pearl! his music was truly explosive....

  • Such a genius!!!

Each note was like a pure pearl! his music was truly explosive....

  • I wonder how representative this recording is of the real sound? It definitely looks ancient!

  • Brilliant and cheerful , he's such an inspiration !

  • hes a machine..look at those fingers..cant even see them.. :)

  • this is WOW :-)

  • Whens this video from?

  • eso es una bena mano Rubinstein!! te abarcará una 15aba por lo menos

  • Posta. Mañana tengo que rendir en el conservatorio ese mismo estudio... ¡Me he desmoralizado por completo! Es increible la prolijidad que logra este muchacho... A mi me sale rápido, pero es n bodriazo!

  • yeah,that's polish soul !

  • Thats one of the most ridicules things i have ever heard.

Rubinstein was one of the greatest pianists of the last century and one of the best Chopin interpreters ever. If you say that this recording doesn't have a single note of music, you have no idea what music is.

  • stop being an ignorant prat and appreciate one of the best pianists of the last century. If you have no respect here, comparing a pianoforte-master to a 'student', you're not wanted here.

  • my world only consists of positive thoughts?

how could you say that when you have no idea who i am. And ill have you know ive critiqued videos of langlang and menuhin so your 'theory' isn't really valid. What has religion got to do with it? your reply to my comment seems to be inaccurate in that youre saying i should have negative thoughts about rubenstein, when i stated that you can't have that good input when youre puting him lower than a 'student'.

  • its an etude, which means study. They were written to improve ones technique. So in this case interpretation and proper style isnt as important because these were played while the player practices. opinion is opinion. i cba to argue any more..

  • Mr. Mombeek is well known as a *musician* of great virtue... In his opinion Richter is "bad musician" and Rubinstein is probably even worse (or slightly better?). Mr. Mombeek also a great *educator* and has a mission to convert YT music community into army of Liberace's fans. As one can see his personal musical taste is impeccable! ;)

  • lol

  • "if the world whas like you" we'd have a case of reverse evolution... someone can read, write and even press piano keys... alas Neanderthal! ;)

  • Why should we give a negative critique to a positive performance??

And why are you insist on being negative??

You simply don't hear the very simple but yet one of the best musical element inside this performance.

No matter how negatively you try to speak about this performance .. Rubinstein is still a very good and extraordinary musician.

  • nope, it's not.

  • What energy right at the end! What a great artist, and how lucky for us that he kept his talent until an advanced age.

Tx so much twotea22 for these wonderful old videos from Russia, I wonder how you got hold of them?

  • Many thanks to the person who posted these videos.

  • Please correct if I'm mistaken, but I thought it was Rubinstein who once said that he did not playing Chopin etudes during his live concerts because they exposed the flaws in his technique?!?

  • Mmmh i'm playing this piece also right now.

Of course, Arthur Rubinstein is technically much better than me, but the 'prononciation' of this piece is indeed that one of a student!

    Where is the poesie indeed?

  • I'm proud to be polish, Rubinstein is also polish :)

  • wow...such an old recording but its still all clear and energetic!

  • He plays so fast it seems like his hands aren't moving! Ehhh?!!! (falls over)

  • nice. i play this piece right now

  • Wow. That guy tore it up!

  • Thank twotea22 for posting the Rubinstein vids. You make my day!!

  • AWESOME!!!

  • where did this come from.I thought id seen all the film we had of him.No gieseking or Lhevinne! that's the shame .

  • AMAZING!!! Such energy and wit, excellent interpretation of this etude!

  • THANK YOU, twotea22, for these wonderful tapes!!

It could only be topped by clara haskil - but is there any recording of her?

  • he aint alil old man
