Great job on Prines argueably most haunting tune.. Your voice and style sound very similiar to his-- As I grow older this song becomes even more poignant.
Hi there. Excellent covers of JP's songs. I spoke with you a while ago ref my JP Tribute band. Check out 'Illegal Smile rehearsal.mp4' on Youtube. We are live in The Spirit Store Bar, Dundalk, Co Louth, Ireland on Sunday 20 November 2011 from 9pm.
Nice job, sir. Thanks for sharing your talent. John Prine is a national treasure. Someone once said, "Bob Dylan is Bob Dylan. He's from another planet. John Prine is one of us."
Simply marvelous Jordan...This is the song that made me learn to play. My roommate was tired of me requesting it at every party and get-together. Taught me to fingerpick. I now...after 30 years do the song for him. Your version is just pure original JP. I marvel at how he has adapted and changed...but this one can never be bettered. Thank you for keeping old JP around...
At last did I find a good JP cover! Even if I tried I couldnt find anything to complain on here, everything sounds just right. Did you ever have a go at illegal or sam?
Excellent... you make it look so simple. While your lessons are great, I'm not quick/good enough to pick it apart. And I can't seem to find an accurate TAB for this and many other Prine classics. Any ideas?
Wow sir, great job. Your fingerpicking skills are amazing, and your voice even sounds a lot like John's. I'll definitely be looking at your "how to fingerpick hello in there" video! If you get a chance, take a look at my john prine vids! They're not nearly as good as yours, but they're a start! Take Care, and keep on playin!
Wow sir, you are very very talented. You have the fingerpicking down and your voice is very similar to John's. I will definitely have to check out your video on how to fingerpick this song! If you have time, check out my "Hello in There" cover! It's not nearly as good as yours, but it's something! Take Care, and keep on playin'!

Very nice! This is one of my favorite Prine songs and you have a great voice for the song. Your finger picking is very much like I recall the Prine recording too. Thanks for a great performance!
fantastic cover man. i'm 21 years old, and i've been playing guitar since i was 13. still sit down and play this song almost every day. i could sing this whole song when i was 4 or 5. prine's ALWAYS been my favorite artist.
I've been working on this one, thanks to this video. Great work. Any chance of you doing a video on Angel From Montgomery? Again, thanks for your help.
What a wonderful talent you have (Just like John Prine). I recently bought a fender guitar..after owning a 2/3 Gibson all my life--and still struggle to play at a few cords. I thought as I was listening to you that I am more like the guy that appreciates a good painting..but could never paint it. I so love seeing the results of great talent!
Some of the finest John Prining Ive heard so far:) My girlfriend is learning the guitar with this very song. She JUST got turned on to prine>by me hehe Great job fellow subscriber
I never know quite how to feel when I hear this song. I love it. It's really great, and your version is really really good. I always feel sad when I hear it. I can often get a little teary eyed! But it's such a beautiful song that I love listening to it!
Your supplemental information reveals much positive information about you, a sensitive compassionate understanding musician. I could hardly compliment some one more.
You play this very well! I have your "finger picking" video as a favorite in order to learn how to finger pick the tune. As for now, I just play it with a pick. I've added a video response as what I managed to do today as what I learned from your video. Thanks.
I was born in '73 and have literally listened to Prine since the day I was born, thanks to my Dad. I was lullabyed to sleep with Prine and Dylan as a kid, and the music has stuck with me as a favorite all my life. I've probably see JP in concert 20 times, and I never get tired of hearing the same songs from 35 years ago!
I've also heard a lot of covers, and just wanted to let you know that you do some really excellent ones.
Doh! You've already given not one but two lessons! The second lesson is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much. Your covers of Prine bring me joy! If I have any more questions I will ask. Thanks again!
That is really good. I love that you took the time to pick the whole song and not shorten it. Most times when I play it all the way through I feel the listeners getting ancy. Playing it complete is true to the beauty of one of the best songs ever written. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful guitar, by the way. Pure.
Many thanks, Brian. This song deserves to be played all the way thru or not at all- so keep doing it that way yourself. I've experienced the same reaction sometimes at parties (it's not a real uplifting party song after all,) but even then I've also realized that there was always at least one or two people listening intently, even if I didn't notice it while I was playing.
Please consider uploading your rendition to YouTube- I promise to listen intently all the way through!
Camera will only do 3 mins. so I did Sour Grapes. Check it out and tell me what you think. I will do more when I figure out how to get past my 3 min. problem. My camera and my wife must be in cahoots.
You may need to use a video camera, or as a cheaper alternative I used for this vid and others, a webcam. I webcammed this video to the hard drive, trimmed it with Windows MovieMaker (installed already *free software* on XP SP2 computers)and then uploaded it. YouTube max file size: 1GB, max length: 10 minutes, which is plenty for playing a song.
Jordan, very good finger pickin. I've been playing for quite some time, I can do one or two finger pickin songs, this song is on my list as soon as my tendonitis in my thumb heals up. I can't even play a simple E chord. Very good singing too. Some day i'll post a video of something. Guess it's time to get a cam huh? LOL. Keep playin, music soothes the soul.
I happen to view your video by mistake, however, being a huge John Prine fan all my life...I was quite impressed with your rendition of his song...very...very Good big guy.....Music is a universal language and the soul of the universe...always continue to do what you do.for you never know whom you made smile with a song...take care
Many thanks for the kind words Michael, (or should I call you Mr. Balls?) Please consider posting your version of this fine song to Youtube- Prine fans everywhere, including your daughter and I, would welcome it with open arms!
Think of this as your homework assignment for the week.
Keep the alternating thumb going: in G I'm thumb picking E and D strings, in Am it's A and G strings. In D7 and D6 I'm alternating between D and G strings.
Great job - This song takes me to a time in my past. The chord pattern sets the mood by itself & you pick it to perfection. Are you sure John isn't off to the side somewhere with his gueetar?
Great cover, better guitar than old John himself!Love the way you hammer on the Am7 and D7 chords - I keep trying but I can't do it and keep the same pattern going! I'm 67 and just picked up my old Martin 0-15 that I haven't touched in years. Never could play worth a damn but I decided to give it another go. Leevester
I tried to teach myself guitar when I was in graduate school. Certainly explains why it took so long to get through :) Anyway, I had no ear; learned chords but couldn't get any real picking or chord-change abilities.
So I appreciate how much talent and effort goes into what you have done here.
Thanks for the example. Maybe I'll pick up the guitar again, if life slows down a little :)
Thanks. I posted another video, "How I Fingerpick..." this song. Not a great demonstration, but the chords are listed in the text description of that video. The pattern is really just "Travis Picking."
Thank you very much! John Prine concerts are a whole lot of fun, aren't they? First time I saw him live was about 1974, and most recently about a year ago. I hope he never stops touring.
Sadly I think I must disagree. I've heard a couple of guys play *my* guitar and made it play sounds and chords I didn't realize that it knew. But at least my Gibson and your Martin make our mistakes sound better than they would otherwise?
Great playing im still very new at this olny have really gotton into playing my guitar in the last 5 months. HAve a 6 string but since I purchased my Normna 12 string well i play on that and finger picking for me well its coming slowly. In a couple of yrs mabye. Man...... That brings a tear to my eye. One of my favorite songs and you did it perfectly. Brings back some fond memories for this 25 year old man from Mississippi. All I can say is... Thanks.
It's early in the season Ian, and anything could happen..so I won't start bragging about the Sens, just yet..They looked real bad in both games with the Leafs..Winning was just shithouse luck lol
Beautiful playing. Wow, learned by ear? That does sound tedious but the results are lovely and your vocal tone is very pleasant too. Great rendition! Cheers, ~Mary :)
Thanks yet again to everyone for your kind comments about my video- I do read them all, and try to have a look at all of your videos also. You are all a fine and friendly and very talented bunch of people!!!
EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! One of my favorites too and I just uploaded my cover which I play in a differnet key. 5 stars aint enough for this beautiful rendition.
Wow. Thanks so much to everyone for the kind words! And many thanks to strat2caster for thinking enough of my video to recommend it to others. Reading all of these nice comments has given me a big *legal* smile!!!

I must say Ive never heard this song before but you performed it with such conviction I thought maybe you wrote it! Very very well done.

If you liked this, then I encourage you to seek out the music of John Prine, the guy who wrote the song and plays it best.

Man...... That brings a tear to my eye. One of my favorite songs and you did it perfectly. Brings back some fond memories for this 25 year old man from Mississippi. All I can say is... Thanks.

Thanks, Rob! You do an awesome job yourself! And BTW, I was apparently wrong in my prediction about how the Leafs would start the season.
Again.
jordanthecat 4 years ago
It's early in the season Ian, and anything could happen..so I won't start bragging about the Sens, just yet..They looked real bad in both games with the Leafs..Winning was just shithouse luck lol

Beautiful playing. Wow, learned by ear? That does sound tedious but the results are lovely and your vocal tone is very pleasant too. Great rendition! Cheers, ~Mary :)
