  • Great job on Prines argueably most haunting tune.. Your voice and style sound very similiar to his-- As I grow older this song becomes even more poignant.

  • Very well done! John Prine is my favorite to play.

  • Hi there. Excellent covers of JP's songs. I spoke with you a while ago ref my JP Tribute band. Check out 'Illegal Smile rehearsal.mp4' on Youtube. We are live in The Spirit Store Bar, Dundalk, Co Louth, Ireland on Sunday 20 November 2011 from 9pm.

  • Great job, you got the finger picking down, and great voice. Big John Prine fan here

  • great job !

  • Nice job! From a long time JP fan. You inspired me to learn this one.

  • Nice job, sir. Thanks for sharing your talent. John Prine is a national treasure. Someone once said, "Bob Dylan is Bob Dylan. He's from another planet. John Prine is one of us."

  • This is genuine - I feel it - in the form of chillbumps running down both arms. Best John Prine coiver I've heard on the Youtube, bar none.

  • Simply marvelous Jordan...This is the song that made me learn to play. My roommate was tired of me requesting it at every party and get-together. Taught me to fingerpick. I now...after 30 years do the song for him. Your version is just pure original JP. I marvel at how he has adapted and changed...but this one can never be bettered. Thank you for keeping old JP around...

  • At last did I find a good JP cover! Even if I tried I couldnt find anything to complain on here, everything sounds just right. Did you ever have a go at illegal or sam?

  • Hey Ian, I stopped by for a listen. Still beautiful. I hope you are well.

  • I think if sublime has one correct usage, it's in describing this song. Magnificent work.

  • Nice one bonny lad!

  • Nice on bonny lad!

  • Oh, this takes me waaaay back! Great job!

  • Excellent... you make it look so simple. While your lessons are great, I'm not quick/good enough to pick it apart. And I can't seem to find an accurate TAB for this and many other Prine classics. Any ideas?

  • Man that was a Great job. Thanks

  • Hey, thanks for teaching me JP fingerstyle, I'm well on my way!

  • @Helgerty Excellent! There can never be too many people playing Prine songs!

  • fantastic!!

  • Wow sir, great job. Your fingerpicking skills are amazing, and your voice even sounds a lot like John's. I'll definitely be looking at your "how to fingerpick hello in there" video! If you get a chance, take a look at my john prine vids! They're not nearly as good as yours, but they're a start! Take Care, and keep on playin!

  • Wow sir, you are very very talented. You have the fingerpicking down and your voice is very similar to John's. I will definitely have to check out your video on how to fingerpick this song! If you have time, check out my "Hello in There" cover! It's not nearly as good as yours, but it's something! Take Care, and keep on playin'!

  • Very nice! This is one of my favorite Prine songs and you have a great voice for the song. Your finger picking is very much like I recall the Prine recording too. Thanks for a great performance!

  • nice

  • I've always loved this song. Such a talent John Prine. Thanks to you I can play it. Many thanks. Try Angel from Montgomery.

  • @rtreker Angel is on my to-do list, though I actually prefer the Bonnie Raitt version to John's original.

  • great job, on a great song.....thanks for posting...

  • @wgcbww Thanks for watching, and for the kind words!

  • fantastic cover man. i'm 21 years old, and i've been playing guitar since i was 13. still sit down and play this song almost every day. i could sing this whole song when i was 4 or 5. prine's ALWAYS been my favorite artist.

  • @TheSeattleCity This song never gets old, does it?

  • Heckagood. Thanks for performing and sharing.

  • I have always loved this song. Thanks for sharing it :)

  • Hot damn, that is one sweet guitar you got there, sir!

  • I like it!

  • I've been working on this one, thanks to this video. Great work. Any chance of you doing a video on Angel From Montgomery? Again, thanks for your help.

  • Yep!

  • What a wonderful talent you have (Just like John Prine). I recently bought a fender guitar..after owning a 2/3 Gibson all my life--and still struggle to play at a few cords. I thought as I was listening to you that I am more like the guy that appreciates a good painting..but could never paint it. I so love seeing the results of great talent!

  • What a great talent you have...both singing and playing. Best rendition of this this song I"ve heard . Wonderful!!

  • Beautiful, just beautiful

    Thanks for sharing your talent.

  • Beautifully played and sung!

  • Great job. We would love to see Clay Pigeons

  • Post chords?

  • he has a "how to" for this song posted... check it out, it's very good.

  • nicely done, I just had to come back to listen again and again and again, wow, that three times, not, a hundred dozen times.

    The best rendition yet.

  • Some of the finest John Prining Ive heard so far:) My girlfriend is learning the guitar with this very song. She JUST got turned on to prine>by me hehe Great job fellow subscriber

  • beautiful rendition

  • Many thanks, Daryl!

  • Excellent job man, sounds great and a lovely guitar as well 5 stars!!

  • I never know quite how to feel when I hear this song. I love it. It's really great, and your version is really really good. I always feel sad when I hear it. I can often get a little teary eyed! But it's such a beautiful song that I love listening to it!

  • Hello in There and Sam Stone are two solidly-sad songs, but they strangely make me feel happy when I sing them. It's hard to explain.

  • greetings from ireland.... where we love singer/song writers... beautiful...

  • I think John Prine has a house in Ireland, doesn't he?

    Greetings from Canada!

  • Perfect treatment of one of my all time favorite songs

    God Bless

    Dan

  • Many thanks, Sir. I just listened to your "Katie's Song" and it blew me away.

  • good job loved it ..one ogf my favorite song from John Prine..very nice and well done!! cool voice too!!

  • I hate to sound redundant to the other posts, but wow - that was soooo cool. One of my favorite John Prine songs... very, very well done!

  • real real nice!!

  • awesome, love the Prine covers.

This is just like Prine's version, sweet dea!

  • Damn Jordon, that was beautiful. This is one of my all-time Prine favorites as well and you play it beautifully.

  • Hey, thanks John!

  • I really like your version of this song, very close to John Prine's version in style and vocals.

I did upload my version just a few days ago and waiting for ya to stop by to have a listen.

  • a superb cover of a really great song. beautiful. good job!!

  • This is a wonderful cover of a wonderful song.

Your supplemental information reveals much positive information about you, a sensitive compassionate understanding musician. I could hardly compliment some one more.

  • Thanks, the two posts made this easy to learn...one of my favorites

  • I'm very glad to hear that. Don't forget to upload your version to YouTube also!!!

  • Very nice! I caught myself singing along, I was entertained, and I too love John Prine, this one is one of my favorites. Thank You!

  • thank you

  • Thank you!!!

  • You play this very well! I have your "finger picking" video as a favorite in order to learn how to finger pick the tune. As for now, I just play it with a pick. I've added a video response as what I managed to do today as what I learned from your video. Thanks.

  • Great Job!!! I've been a Prine fan for a while and it's good to see someone playing his tunes and doing such a great job as well!

I picked up a few pointers so Thanks!

  • Thanks to you also! Now get busy on uploading your own version of one of his fine songs!!

  • awesome

  • Thanks! Hey, what happened to your "leaf" picture- I really liked that one ;-)

  • Haha, you liked that leaf eh? I did to, but again, you kick ass man. great guitar sound and singing.

  • You do a very good version!

  • Excellent

  • Well done! Thanks.

  • Nice pick'in and sing'in. Subbed

  • awesome playing. never heard the song before but now you make me want to go out and find this song! thank you so much for sharing this

  • Great job man... lovely picking style.

  • Beautiful! Gonna go check out more of your stuff. Thanks for sharing.

  • Wow, thanks very much for the nice comment. Seems that your dad and you also have great taste in music!

  • I was born in '73 and have literally listened to Prine since the day I was born, thanks to my Dad. I was lullabyed to sleep with Prine and Dylan as a kid, and the music has stuck with me as a favorite all my life. I've probably see JP in concert 20 times, and I never get tired of hearing the same songs from 35 years ago!

I've also heard a lot of covers, and just wanted to let you know that you do some really excellent ones.

Kudos for the skill and great taste in music!

  • This is great my friend

  • I never hear this song, but I think is beautiful in all aspects, including the words, finger picking and voice. 5 well deserved stars.

  • Gracias! It is indeed a beautiful song- a long-time favorite of mine.

  • Doh! You've already given not one but two lessons! The second lesson is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much. Your covers of Prine bring me joy! If I have any more questions I will ask. Thanks again!

  • I'm always happy to help out a fellow Prine fan. Please keep me advised.

  • Can you teach us how to fingerpick this song?

  • Have a look at the two videos I have posted as video responses to this one, and then let me know if I can be of further assistance.

  • That is really good. I love that you took the time to pick the whole song and not shorten it. Most times when I play it all the way through I feel the listeners getting ancy. Playing it complete is true to the beauty of one of the best songs ever written. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful guitar, by the way. Pure.

  • Many thanks, Brian. This song deserves to be played all the way thru or not at all- so keep doing it that way yourself. I've experienced the same reaction sometimes at parties (it's not a real uplifting party song after all,) but even then I've also realized that there was always at least one or two people listening intently, even if I didn't notice it while I was playing.

Please consider uploading your rendition to YouTube- I promise to listen intently all the way through!

  • Thanks.

I just did Souvenirs with my digital camera.

56mb. First time I have doen this. How do I reduce the size or set it to stream?

  • Camera will only do 3 mins. so I did Sour Grapes. Check it out and tell me what you think. I will do more when I figure out how to get past my 3 min. problem. My camera and my wife must be in cahoots.

  • You may need to use a video camera, or as a cheaper alternative I used for this vid and others, a webcam. I webcammed this video to the hard drive, trimmed it with Windows MovieMaker (installed already *free software* on XP SP2 computers)and then uploaded it. YouTube max file size: 1GB, max length: 10 minutes, which is plenty for playing a song.

  • Great job. This was a lot harder than I thought it would be. Nice playing and singing. Nice guitar too.

  • Man, that was fabulous....really fabulous!

  • superb many thanks your timing and intonation are perfect

  • Jordan, very good finger pickin. I've been playing for quite some time, I can do one or two finger pickin songs, this song is on my list as soon as my tendonitis in my thumb heals up. I can't even play a simple E chord. Very good singing too. Some day i'll post a video of something. Guess it's time to get a cam huh? LOL. Keep playin, music soothes the soul.

  • Thanks! I wish you well- heal up good first, then tune up!

  • Really nice playing. Love this song. Just teaching myself guitar and this song a little advanced ...but maybe one day. Thanks for your post's

  • Hi Jordan

I happen to view your video by mistake, however, being a huge John Prine fan all my life...I was quite impressed with your rendition of his song...very...very Good big guy.....Music is a universal language and the soul of the universe...always continue to do what you do.for you never know whom you made smile with a song...take care

    Kimmie in Atlantic Canada

  • What a lovely comment- thanks, Kimmie! You just made me smile also.

  • good genuine effort,,,not bad at all

  • Thanks. And by the way, I love almost every one of the songs in your "favorites."

  • Dear Jordan,

Please excuse my daft Email name???

My comment is that it is as close as you will get to the real thing, although my daughter of 9 said "You are better daddy"

That is just what I wanted to hear,

To close, please keep doing what you are doing. Michael from Scotland

  • Many thanks for the kind words Michael, (or should I call you Mr. Balls?) Please consider posting your version of this fine song to Youtube- Prine fans everywhere, including your daughter and I, would welcome it with open arms!

Think of this as your homework assignment for the week.

    Best Wishes from Canada,

    Ian.

  • good job almost sounds like john prine

  • Thanks for that, scoobydoo!

  • Keep the alternating thumb going: in G I'm thumb picking E and D strings, in Am it's A and G strings. In D7 and D6 I'm alternating between D and G strings.

  • Really great, man. Your voice has all the gracious humility of John himself...and the guitar playing is just perfect...beautiful job!

  • Thanks, hickeye! I love this song.

  • what is the picking pattern? 3623 then what? I can't find tabs for this anywhere.

  • Great job - This song takes me to a time in my past. The chord pattern sets the mood by itself & you pick it to perfection. Are you sure John isn't off to the side somewhere with his gueetar?

  • Thanks! If John was off to the side somewhere, I'd buy him a few beers but never play a Prine song in front of him.

  • Great cover, better guitar than old John himself!Love the way you hammer on the Am7 and D7 chords - I keep trying but I can't do it and keep the same pattern going! I'm 67 and just picked up my old Martin 0-15 that I haven't touched in years. Never could play worth a damn but I decided to give it another go. Leevester

  • You'll get it- I'm a simple guitar guy and if I can do it, anyone can. Happy picking!

  • I'm 63 and decided to take up the guitar after many years of not playing. Hope I can sound as good as you.

    Chas

  • I tried to teach myself guitar when I was in graduate school. Certainly explains why it took so long to get through :) Anyway, I had no ear; learned chords but couldn't get any real picking or chord-change abilities.

So I appreciate how much talent and effort goes into what you have done here.

Thanks for the example. Maybe I'll pick up the guitar again, if life slows down a little :)

  • Good job!!!!!!!! I liked it!

  • Thank you. I'm glad you liked it!

  • I`ve been a fan of Prine for many years.Everyone has their favorites. Do Ya do a Sam Stone?

  • That was fantastic. I would love to know the picking pattern and chords - one of my favorite Prine songs.

  • Thanks. I posted another video, "How I Fingerpick..." this song. Not a great demonstration, but the chords are listed in the text description of that video. The pattern is really just "Travis Picking."

  • Excellent! Studio quality. Thanks!!!

  • great job Jordan. Best cover of this song i've heard. I saw John Prine in concert a couple of years ago. You do him proud.

  • Thank you very much! John Prine concerts are a whole lot of fun, aren't they? First time I saw him live was about 1974, and most recently about a year ago. I hope he never stops touring.

  • Yes and a very pretty song! Love the words.

  • Sounds great! I've played it for years. It sounds better on your Gibson, than my Martin? Its the guitar, not the player, Right?

  • Sadly I think I must disagree. I've heard a couple of guys play *my* guitar and made it play sounds and chords I didn't realize that it knew. But at least my Gibson and your Martin make our mistakes sound better than they would otherwise?

  • Great playing im still very new at this olny have really gotton into playing my guitar in the last 5 months. HAve a 6 string but since I purchased my Normna 12 string well i play on that and finger picking for me well its coming slowly. In a couple of yrs mabye. Keep it up and if you could add the tablature that would be great.

  • Great job. I'm trying to learn to play at the age of 48, your work is a great inspiration. Thank you..

  • You're doing what I'm still doing: trying to learn to play at age 48.

  • Beautiful job..awesome

  • I must say Ive never heard this song before but you performed it with such conviction I thought maybe you wrote it! Very very well done.

  • If you liked this, then I encourage you to seek out the music of John Prine, the guy who wrote the song and plays it best.

  • Man...... That brings a tear to my eye. One of my favorite songs and you did it perfectly. Brings back some fond memories for this 25 year old man from Mississippi. All I can say is... Thanks.

  • Thanks to you for the kind words!

  • sounds great...such a sad song

  • Love your finger picking. Think of me as the 2nd one being happy at the fire place.

    Rob

  • Thanks, Rob! You do an awesome job yourself! And BTW, I was apparently wrong in my prediction about how the Leafs would start the season.

    Again.

  • It's early in the season Ian, and anything could happen..so I won't start bragging about the Sens, just yet..They looked real bad in both games with the Leafs..Winning was just shithouse luck lol

  • Boy...I don't know how I missed this one!
