I think that a lot of parents who are the historically "accepted" group...so white parents, straight parents etc are less likely, whatever their own views on race/sexuality, to talk to their children about equality because inequality doesn't effect them in that way. Whereas black parents, gay parents, disabled parents etc HAVE had first hand contact with the damage prejudice can do, and so are more likely to talk to their children about it.

That is her natural skin color (that is the skin color of her parents) and as for her hair, she straightens, not softens it, but she is not the only woman who straightens her hair. Think of the Lion King and other kid stuff. The villian often can be very dark not necessarily black in ethnicity but dark. It can also be culture. I'm black most tough kids at school were black, while the lighter kids stayed bit more out of trouble. He may have got these impressions from TV or sadly even real life experience at school.

IMO: I believe this comes forth as we (black ppl) are often misrepresented in the mass media as being 'bad' ie: the thief, single parents, dead beat dads, gangsters, entertainers (glorifying women), school dropouts, uneducated hence why we are seen as the lower working class, sadly the knowledge gained from this misrepresentation is now what the younger generation see as the representation of the black race. Where there is knowledge there is power and profit to be made from our self-hatred.

Religion and the general media are the first too perpetuate racial stereotypes. many religious groups tolerate the intolerance of others racial, sexual preference and cultural differences. Many parents of any ethnic group need to discuss racial stereotyping of others. true kids do follow what you do if you personally do not associate personally with others frm different races then odds are your kids will feel uncomfortable in having friends or relationships with other races and that's just wrong

I think that a lot of parents who are the historically "accepted" group...so white parents, straight parents etc are less likely, whatever their own views on race/sexuality, to talk to their children about equality because inequality doesn't effect them in that way. Whereas black parents, gay parents, disabled parents etc HAVE had first hand contact with the damage prejudice can do, and so are more likely to talk to their children about it.

This experiment is invalid. Experimental bias.
Of course the white kid is gonna pick the black kid as the worst, because he has sub-consciously picked up on what it is the experiment is expecting of him. He isn't going to pick the white kid as this is the example that most resembles himself, and he isn't going to say to the researcher "I'm sorry but I don not think a skin color makes a person inherently bad" because he's 5 and completely lacks the capability to do so.

as a child I was a military brat.I can remember in san antonio the history books in elementry depicted hispanics negatively.When I was in cali the books then depicted asians negatively & when I was in Tenn. it depicted blacks negatively.I think this was done purposely to have the minorities beaten down early as kids and targeted in areas where those minorities were most poplulated.This is a larger issue and should be studied with a different approach than just a lack of social diversity.

I agree with Solidad. Its not about what you say when confronted, its what you do when you are NOT confronted that develops these prejudices. I think there are waaay too many white Americans who say "we're not racist" as a precursor to make excuses for not being culturally aware. As soon as the mother made her "i'm not racist" statement and used her "i've taught different kids" support, she goes on to show how she lives in an all white neighborhood and never spoke about race to her child.

I agree with Soledad. The mom, along with other adults in this child's life, DID teach him to be biased against darker skin. Even through inaction, she DID teach him. He has learned that he does not have to be concerned about people of other races because they are not significant in his non-diverse experience. A family should live where it chooses, but how did the mom avoid all darker-skinned moms who shared the same values of racial tolerance she claims to possess? Something is off here.

Other races will never understand the psychological damage done to blacks by racism. How black people view themselves is largely been shaped by racism against blacks. In fact how ALL races see black people has been shaped by this. The straight hair thing is a good example of NOT self-hatred but a subconscious manifestation of how white supremacy has shaped what is beautiful.
