I think the extremely thick Baritone Octave strings may warp the neck of an acoustic violin, so i would not recommend that. Instead you should get a MORPHEUS DROPTUNE box to droptune your music by one octave so that your sound would work better with guitar distortion effects and amps. Hope it works for you. haha You can watch demo videos of MORPHEUS DROPTUNE in action with a Violin in youtube. Just enter the keywords into the Youtube search box above. (*smile*)
@archtopaddict metal is actually about how melodic you can play and how fast you can play up and down the neck. not about playing the same 4 boring chords that are right next to each other. since when is metal about having no melody?
@PurpleHat1991 Hi PurpleHat1991, check out my more melodic video on HEAVYMETALVIOLINdotCOM There's also pdf tab for electric fiddle written by me for the Rock Metal riff in the video there. \m/ Rock On!!! \m/
@bloodzone666 if you listen to metal bands from the 80s (queensryche, helloween, iron maiden, ratt) they are all melodic. none of it has to do with sweden or anything. i dont mean melodic as in they were deliberately trying to be melodic. i mean it is melodic compared to garbage like this that is just boring power chords and notes that are all in the same area right next to each other. metal is about playing notes all up and down the neck and complex scales.
no. metal can be about whatever the player wants it to be, as you put it "boring powerchords" well.. actually some people enjoy that more than any of those 80s bands you mention including myself. and its not just powerchords there are other elements if you were more vigilant and open minded about metal.
@SwirlyBrokenHearts vigilant and open minded? trust me metal is all i listen to. i just understand that playing colorful solos takes way more talent than playing a few notes that are right next to each other. thats all im trying to say. and dont say thats an opinion because that is a fact.
my point was solos isnt the only good thing about metal... and as you say rightly and anyone will agree with you that it takes talent for solos YEs. but talent does not define "sounding good". you forgot the point i mentioned about its up to the guitar player whatever the fuck they choose. jus sayin bro. and if you dont like this style you can leave and stop being (a bit) of a "wetback".
@roniemath Yes, you can use a cheap clip on pickup on an acoustic violin. As long as you can get the signal to a distortion effects (whether it is an actual effects pedal or the software distortion effects in Apple Garageband), it would work. Happy fiddling!
@archtopaddict hey, i have a cello, not a violin but if i buy a pickup somewhere and then plug that into my line 6 amp i can still get all the effects and distortion right?
@Skateoncello Yes, you can buy any cello pickup, but the most important component is a good pre-amp DI box. Otherwise the signal is too weak to be usable. The music shop can sell you both the cello pickup and the pre-amp DI box. A good pre-amp can make all the difference. Happy playing Metal on Cello. haha
How is this possible you can still tune violin if you're using so thick strings? I mean, wooden pegs are very sentitive and when string is thicker than required they just won't hold it.
You're using those machine gears that looks like pegs or what?
@Max0Inq That's an excellent question. The answer is that the tension in the extremely thick strings are actually very very low, so it's very easy to tune the Octave Baritone strings (Super Sensitive brand).
@Max0Inq No enlargement of the peg grooves was necessary. I simply "unwrapped" the colored cloth material a little of the tip of the thick string and inserted one of the unwrapped wires into the peg holes and started to turn the pegs to tighten the strings. haha. For the Ball end of the baritone strings, I used a plier to flaten the strings a little so they would fit into the fine tuners. No messing around with the violin's original structure at all. I only messed around with the strings. hahaha
This sounds pretty cool actually, without the video, there is no way of telling that this was done with a viola! Way to go mate, metal on a viola's pretty crazy in itself but you've pulled it off and made it sound pretty cool.
might as well just get a guitar..

Hey I'm getting into folk metal right now and I have a regular acoustic violin but i was wondering what sort of strings you'd recommend for me?

@hungariaskin88 Thank you! I'd take that as a compliment! haha The less mainstream and violin-like it sounds, the more METAL it is. Mucho gracias!

I used a 1/8" to 1/4" audio adapter to plug in a 1/4" guitar cable so that it can be inserted into the guitar port on the Line 6 X3.

How do You plug it into X3 since it only has a 1/8' output?

A violin tuned like this would be a sick instrument for doom metal.
