This is not bel canto this is Gruberovaisms... God the faces, that downward scale that sounds like the doll in Hoffman... what the F? She has a good sound, but she sucks musically.

What you do not understand is that this woman never had it together musically.. she always could hit the notes.. not one is disputing that.. and if that is all that is important to you, well then she would still be incredible.
it's very well sung, but she kind of fools around with her mouth too much and it doesn't really change her sound at all, so it's really unnecessary and affected, besides being terribly distracting. I've seen other videos of her and she doesn't do that! The singing is absolutely FANTASTIC, though!
I believe that those variations are not written in the original partitura. Must probably the decision does not belong to Gruberova but to the conductor.
Yes it is what some "fans" wrote, but I cannot understand how a conductor can "ignore" the abilities of a coloratura like Gruberova , it is as if you cut the high'c in the duet in Ballo in Maschera!!Just discusting for the singer!!
@olaig100 Im sure someone like Edita would probably get away with what she wanted to sing, especially if the conductor wasn´s a big one and even thouse let stars like her singing their own cadenzas and fiorituras.
@motardbear15 It could also be because this was her first Elvira. Does a complete version of this exist on VHS or DVD? Because it would be a winner, there isn't a truly excellent Puritani on video out yet, I believe.

Amazing that this is 22 years ago! She looks stunning beautiful and sings up a storm.
My only complaint is w/ the conductor not allowing her to add some high embellishments.
