Thanks 4 making this video; now i know what co-washing is. btw what's your hair type? Would like to know cause my hair is just like yours and been wondering what type I had.
Ya'll, don't buy an expensive conditioner just to co-wash your hair cause it will be gone in a week or two. So, buy the cheap conditioners like VO5, Suave, White rain, or even Herbal essences conditioners.
@samyoe So, are you honestly trying to say using a $20 eight ounce bottle of conditioner to co-wash your hair DAILY is better than using one that only costs $1.00 with more product? I don't understand those who waste money when they could easily save. If you have a lot of hair like me, that small $20 conditioner will not last more than a week. So, it is smarter to buy the cheapest one I can find. Using a $20 conditioner everyday may work well for someone who is rich or has a twa, though.
@CrownJewel32 Yeah sure, if you have the money to spend. But if you've got other priorities then there is nothing wrong with using cheaper alternatives. Although you may be able to find the more expensive products for cheaper online or at particular shops.
Thanks for vid. So what happens next? Do you just rinse the conditioner out? If so, this means most of your process takes place outside the shower (correct me if Im wrong). I really like the way you do this. The water bottle spritz first-- can you explain why you do it this way?
My hair is very similar yours, maybe a little looser , but I wanted to ask do you know your hair type? The classification of it is slightly confusing to me.. :/
My question is why would someone use conditioner instead of shampoo. Conditioner builds up in the hair, and dulls the shine you might have. Also, be careful of the conditioners you use, as some are not meant for hair with tight curl (african american hair). Nexus, does not contain the emollient qualities that ethnic hair really requires. While the ph level of the conditioner is lower than the shampoo, and may protect from breakage, I still would suggest one shampoo a month. Otherwise, no shine.
what hair type is yours? it look really similar to mines. I am transitioning slowly 6month strong and 12 months till I BC so wish me luck. what are some of the products you use?
I dont know if cowashing will work for me... I have a BAD case of dry scalp and im not sure if cowashing will wash out all of the flakes.... any advice?
@bluejuiseritsma - those flakes can be dandruff, and dandruff is a bacteria, and by only using conditioner all the time, you are lowering the ph level, and essentially making a breeding ground for even more bacteria. I would suggest using LISTERINE or SEA BREEZE, for your dandruff. We use it in the salon all the time. LISTERINE seems to work best. CAUTION! those two products will really burn your eyes so keep it away from your eyes. If this does not work, consult with your dermatologist!
@Orionhigh7 it's to basically keep your hair moisturized. when your transitioning it is even harder to keep your hair moisturized then when you have a perm or are natural. the point where the relaxed hair and new growth meet is extremely weak.
plus shampooing constantly robs your hair of needed moisture. while conditioning does the opposite.
so basically it's washing your hair, a sub for shampoo =]
Thanks for sharing this... I never heard of co-washing before, I've always just used shampoo. Hopefully, my permed and damaged hair can grow out and I can go back to being natural again.
My hair is very similar to yours and I recently decided to grow it out natural (no more texturizer!) and haven't shampooed in about two months. My hair feels incredible, and I can finally grow it out without use of chemicals or worrying about uncontrollable frizz. Great video!
ok. i guess im not understanding....why would you wash with conditioner instead of shampoo? Im guessing for moisture but is that acutally good for hair 2 co wash?
Thanks for this video. I just started researching natural hair and couldn't figure out what co-washing was or how to do it -- thanks to you, I know exactly what to do for my daughter's hair. Thx so much! :o)
Im ignorant to this, but please explain the reason for washing with conditioner. Shouldn't you use a cleansing agent, whether it be natural or not? They do sale natural shampoo and cleansers right?
@bg91241 From what I've researched, since natural hair needs more moisture you should use the conditioner to wash. It is strong enough usually to get rid of regular grim while keeping it moist. For when you have HUGE buildup, I've heard of apple cider vinegar rinses or a baking soda/water/castile mix. That "squeaky clean" sound you hear from regular shampoo actually means its been striped of all moisture. Think about it, when do moist things make high pitched squeaky sounds? Hope that helps!!
So once it was squeaky clean wouldn't you just reapply the moisture with your natural products? I think like this, when I was my body I'm looking for a squeaky clean (OCD) and then reapply moisture, so I've always applied the same technique to my hair. I will try it though, but I will have to get use to it.
I know it takes getting used to but think about it. Once you strip your hair of natural moistures, reapplying can in no way be as beneficially as retaining the natural moisture from the start. The damage of over drying/striping is already done. I apply the same thought to bathing. I wash with black soap, and air dry near with a space heater on in the room. I do this because I noticed that every time I towel dried and lotioned, I never stay as smooth & soft as when I just air dry and lotion.
If you just have to use a shampoo, then try Dr. Bronner's. It is a Castile Soap - my family loves the Hemp/Almond. It isn't drying, and your hair doesn't feel like it is stripped and dried out.

I just feel like washing with less shampoo would be better (to prevent excessive drying), and then conditioning it. I guess I'm conditioned to believe that cleaning can't happen with conditioner!
I see your point about the nexus but your hair texture is much looser than mine. I have 4a type hair so I love how the nexus makes my hair a softer and more manageable.
Thanks this video has been great to help me understand co-washing. I'm new to natural hair care big chop this past January so still trying to learn how to manage my 4 A type hair.
Conditioners have mild surfactants and can be used to cleanse the scalp without stripping the hair of natural oils. This is best for hair that is naturally dry. Shampoos can be used occassionally to get a deeper clean
I don't keep conditioner in my hair. I just recently started using infusium 23 leave in (white bottle with brown writing) as detangler when i am combing out my hair but even wash that out once I'm through.
If you are natural, you can leave it in. I do this all the time, and my hair is growing like a weed. Just make sure it's a relatively cheap conditioner like Suave or VO5. But I use Redken Butter Treat. Water and conditioner are a natural's best friend.

Can some one tell me WHEN exactly do you co-wash your hair? I heard after your workout. Is that it?
bhpen 2 years ago
You co-wash anytime you feel like it.
Some people only wash their hair using shampoo once a week or every 2 weeks, so in between they would co-wash.
I personally only co-wash in the summer, when I do my wash and go.

You should atleast shampoo your hair like once or twice a month because of product build-up.The build-up could clog your hair folicles.
