@jofthesloth not in Ireland - as an original sport of the GAA it is very similar to fast pitch softball using a sliotar the traditional ball also used for hurling. The bats used are not the same as those used in softball. The bat is not carried with the runner. The english game of rounders carries a slight resemblance but as you pointed out there is a smaller baton used and I believe the ball used is also soft.

this is softball, rounders has a smaller bat, which you carry with you. the ball is also smaller and the bases have posts on them.
