Beautiful oboe solo. Beautiful. THis is music. This is emotion. This is life. Kudos to Robert W. Smith. Bless him to create this kind of emotion in me for many more years!
ABCBA only works if he's using the same themes for each of your A and B sections - and honestly, following a working pattern doesn't make something mundane. There's a lot of room for originality within a framework. Or would you also call Shakespeare's sonnets - a rigidly metrical form of poetry - mundane under the same criteria?
Yes... Mundane. A lot of his music starts out with a fanfare, then a fast B section, slow middle section, fast B section and then end with a fanfare. ABCBA. Just listen to 12 seconds to the moon, On Eagles Wings, Africa: Ceremony Dance and Ritual, To Dance in a Secret Garden just to name a few. I’ve had to play them in the past. Granted he does have his moments, like the trumpets at the beginning of The Ascension, the the oboe solo here and maybe a couple of other snippets but that’s it.
Actually played this and Spirit of Orpheus under Smith's direction back in '99 District 1 Senior High Honor Band in Alabama. Those 32nd note runs were not easy to try to learn in less than three days! Fun as all get out though.
my school tried playing this a few years ago when i was attending, sounded like poo from us, i think they are slowly doing it justice tho. Tenor Sax all the way!
@hedgepeth47 That sounds legit. Just because no one else could play it in concert band my band director dropped this piece :[ but since i could play it it moved me up into sinfonietta for next year
Huh. I just assumed that everything R. Smith wrote had something do to with a big storm. Guess I'm proved wrong! Excellent clarinet solo. Reminds me of Joel Spratt...

Looking my trombone notes right now and I must admit that I feel little timid at the first part.

Most of Robert W. Smith’s music is formulaic and mundane, but I have to admit the middle section with the oboe solo is quite beautiful.
rufus888 4 months ago
@rufus888 sometimes the oboe solo is played with a soprano sax and that sounds really nice as well

@rufus888 GO AWAY WITH YOUR CRITICISM! Mundane!!??
