  • Beautiful oboe solo. Beautiful. THis is music. This is emotion. This is life. Kudos to Robert W. Smith. Bless him to create this kind of emotion in me for many more years!

  • I actually performed this piece yesterday with an honor band from Alabama. He Robert Smith himself conducted us. We also played mekong

  • The oboe solo always gives me the chills... Amazing song.

  • ABCBA only works if he's using the same themes for each of your A and B sections - and honestly, following a working pattern doesn't make something mundane. There's a lot of room for originality within a framework. Or would you also call Shakespeare's sonnets - a rigidly metrical form of poetry - mundane under the same criteria?

  • I wanna play bass bone so badly for this, but I basically am the tuba section at my school so my conductor won't let me :((

  • lol horn part is awesome but so hard to play lol

  • I played this piece in Highschool (Alto Saxophone) ! I loved it soooo much :D !! It's a bit tricky but awesome to play~

  • mm. the flute part is hellish.

  • @justintam14 Clarinets aren't spared either.

  • @justintam14 sounds awesome doesnt it??

  • I loved playing this senior yr of high school...euphonium solo!!

  • sounds like Medal of Honor music

  • Looking my trombone notes right now and I must admit that I feel little timid at the first part.

  • Most of Robert W. Smith’s music is formulaic and mundane, but I have to admit the middle section with the oboe solo is quite beautiful.

  • @rufus888 sometimes the oboe solo is played with a soprano sax and that sounds really nice as well

  • @rufus888 GO AWAY WITH YOUR CRITICISM! Mundane!!??

  • Yes... Mundane. A lot of his music starts out with a fanfare, then a fast B section, slow middle section, fast B section and then end with a fanfare. ABCBA. Just listen to 12 seconds to the moon, On Eagles Wings, Africa: Ceremony Dance and Ritual, To Dance in a Secret Garden just to name a few. I’ve had to play them in the past. Granted he does have his moments, like the trumpets at the beginning of The Ascension, the the oboe solo here and maybe a couple of other snippets but that’s it.

  • @rufus888 By the way... it's Africa: Ceremony, Song, and Ritual... and that's ABCDEBA. Just sayin'

  • good piece of band music! wish i could have played it

  • can anyone tell me what genre is this song considered?

  • If only our woodwinds could play like this...

  • We played this in High School!!! Love it!

  • <3 this piece so much.

  • Actually played this and Spirit of Orpheus under Smith's direction back in '99 District 1 Senior High Honor Band in Alabama. Those 32nd note runs were not easy to try to learn in less than three days! Fun as all get out though.

  • My brother played this in 2003 for marching band, watching him practice was the most excited Ive been and it's almost 10 years later.

  • Wow, our Wind Ensemble just got this song last week. I cannot wait to play it!!!

  • God do i miss playing this song

  • This is beautiful.

  • What grade is this?

  • @sandsurfer55 It's grade four music.

  • horns and bari/euphs are amazing in this

  • one of my favorites from my band days ♥

  • CHS is going to beast at this song on tuesday of next week lol

  • oboe solo is my favorite piece of music to play. ever!

  • Dont know why, but I just love the the trumpet in here, I guess its because I play it. They are excellent in this band

  • My band is playing this for one of our district festival pieces. Love it! French horns are totally boss.

  • my school tried playing this a few years ago when i was attending, sounded like poo from us, i think they are slowly doing it justice tho. Tenor Sax all the way!

  • My band is learning this song right now! :D super fun. I play euphonium LOW BRASS REPRESENT!

  • @CdrLettuce due my band and i play the euphonium too xp

  • @hedgepeth47 That sounds legit. Just because no one else could play it in concert band my band director dropped this piece :[ but since i could play it it moved me up into sinfonietta for next year

  • best version of the song i hav ever heard.NICE!

  • Huh. I just assumed that everything R. Smith wrote had something do to with a big storm. Guess I'm proved wrong! Excellent clarinet solo. Reminds me of Joel Spratt...

  • I played this in my high school band. One of my favourite pieces.

  • I'm playing this in community band right now. I loooove it. The mallet parts are fun.
