I just watched the movie tonight and being a recreational musician myself this was awesome.

Lao Duang Duen, a Thai classical song composed by HRH Prince Phenphat of Thailand.

In 1903, the prince of siam(Thai) met an ordinary woman princess of lanna Thai (chiangmai) he loved. Unfortunately, it was forbidden by the royal custom during that period. He was so depressed. He had played his song in dedication to his love day by day until the last day of his life.

He died in 1910 at the age of 28. His song has become a symbol of sentimental love since then.

The "Lao" term actually refers to the tone the music conjures up...so a new composiition taking a particular tone or style can also adopt the "lao" or "khmer" etc in its name like classical music's use of adagio, toccata etc...similarities in tone or rythm is also part of the fact that southeast asia is a melting pot and that in ancient times nationalities like our concept of nationalities did not exist so please don't bother with cultural-centricism
