Again... Sometimes, there are parts of a musicals that are merely the thoughts of the character, expressed in words or song, so that the audience understands what's going on in her head. Therefore, she may not be actually singing in the ear of the person who is the object of the song.

I think its a realistic representation of actual . However no candles /oil lamps ,
but she plays a hooker that hates her clients , nicks their booze , money etc . How much did she charge Jesus , ? Did he pay up ? What was the going rate for a BJ in them days ? Did he get freebies ? Was it love ?
@ChanChiMan1999 It's all been modernised rather than a traditional version of the life of Jesus. That's why they may not look stereotypical of their characters. We are currently doing this production and we are not having Jesus with long hair or anything like that.

I saw this on Broadway in the '70's, and I thought the '73 movie was disappointing, to say the least. Norman Jewison's vision was way off. To my taste, anyway. This version is brilliant.
The acting in this film is terrible- too rigid and silly IMO. But Renee Castle does a pretty good job of portraying Mary. Sadly, I don't think the rest of the cast is right for this opera.

Surprising since I still consider Yvonne Elliman's rendition much better, in her facial expression, body language, and even right at the end when Elliman justs sits down and watches him sleep with no physical contact. Both are good, but Yvonne Elliman seems more human.

Compared to Yvonne Elliman she doesn't stand a chance of winning. Elliman was much more convincing in the field of acting. Ellimans voice was also more touching and sensual. But she is good.
I grew up listening to Yvonne Elliman sing this song on the JC Superstar album. But this is my fave version of this song. There are some of her expressions I don't care for but some I really love. She hits that note at 2:46 when she sings, "I never thought I'd come to this." I've never heard anyone else hit that note like that and I really like it.

Personally, I think this is perfect. Granted, I understand those who don't like this portrayal but in my understanding this song is the depiction of her inner conflict and in that sense, she does the song justice.
She portrays anguish, which is exactly what this character is feeling during this part of the story. Rice's lyrics are brilliant. They show the complexity of the situation and of her emotional reaction to the recent events in her life.
I love the part when she's packing her purse. It's such a modern behavior.
Tell you this: Ivonne's version reminds me of those great days full of optimism, love, ideals and poetry. Those days were my Sagarmatha. This Renee's version reminds me all of that as well. And eventhough I may think those days were better, present day world is fantastic, full of beauty, hope and brilliancy. This song is inmortal and this Renee's version is an undisputed proof!!!!

Excellent performance!! Weber and Rice hit their high point of song writing with this one. It's the music and words of this song that expose the emotions of a tortured soul. The only song that can challenge this is from the same opera, "Too Much Heaven On Their Minds." This theme is followed throughout the whole opera, culminating in the title song asking "Why?"
The opera focuses on the relationships of Jesus with Mary Madelene and Judas Iscariot.. Much conjecture, a lot of emotion.

everyone's commenting about how her emotions are wrong; but you need to take into account the fact that there are hundreds of ways to interpret every song, and she choose the way the felt right to her, no two people will ever perform the same song the same way. Brilliant talent, wow. However, the whole point of the song as it unfolds, is Mary Magdalen's sudden loss of confidence and remorse - new fragility in trying to understand the change of direction in her life - according to the words, music, and progession of the original version. Yvonee Elliman captured this fragility perfectly in her performace. That was the point of the song at that juncture as expressed the opera, as being a central character. Fragility, not a rapid mix of emotions.
Not sure, but it could be the direction she was given. She is an actor, and actors do not usually get to just do whatever they want to. Productions do have directors.

My sister in law took me to this when I was 13 & even tho some aspects now seem a little dated, this song in particular made quite an impression. It still does today.

I dont like her singing voice but I did enjoy her acting, even though the shifts at first felt too quick I am soo mad o i am sad i am emotional i dont know what to do...its od when I did this song I just I didnt do it like this. But I love the acting in general.

everyone's commenting about how her emotions are wrong; but you need to take into account the fact that there are hundreds of ways to interpret every song, and she choose the way the felt right to her, no two people will ever perform the same song the same way. I personally think she gave a brilliant performance.

Brilliant talent, wow. However, the whole point of the song as it unfolds, is Mary Magdalen's sudden loss of confidence and remorse - new fragility in trying to understand the change of direction in her life - according to the words, music, and progession of the original version. Yvonee Elliman captured this fragility perfectly in her performace. That was the point of the song at that juncture as expressed the opera, as being a central character. Fragility, not a rapid mix of emotions.

Not sure, but it could be the direction she was given. She is an actor, and actors do not usually get to just do whatever they want to. Productions do have directors.

Over acting... she's not as good as Yvonne... 1973 was a much better cast and production... don't like it. Don't like the remake and she's totally not as believable. Why is he in pants anyway... Jesus wore a robe. Ya. Overdramatizing. Not the best performance I've seen. Go back to the original 73 version. Booooooo

My sister in law took me to this when I was 13 & even tho some aspects now seem a little dated, this song in particular made quite an impression. It still does today.
