smoothwall express 3.0 router done

We just updated our Smoothwall, and we want to run a wireless access point from Smooth wall (express 3.0), at a remote location via VPN. Our IT staff understands the red, green, & orange "color schemes," but we don't understand the blue, & purple, or even if they still are used. Any ideas?

@Cr82klbs no clue i think blue ang pruple are something between the normal red orange green. something between i think. I just use it for wired..

btw... what nic do you use for wireless on the smoothwall box?

LAN (Green): Intel Corporation 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] with a Netgear ProSafe switch.

WLAN (Purple): 3Com Corporation 3c905C-TX/TX-M [Tornado] with a Walmart Belkin N router set in AP mode.

External (Red): Realtek 8139 connected to a Motorola Surfboard.

Just a note to anyone looking to build one. You don't need gigabit NICs in the Smoothwall to have gigabit LAN. Just gigabit NICs in the PCs and a gig capable switch.

nice nice... yes you need gigabit if you are like me and are right at the limit for what an 100mbits card can handle. And i plan to get an even faster internet soon and go to 250/250mbits. Then an 100mbits nic wont do.

Yeah, if your constantly moving files between local networks, then a gigabit card is the only way to go. I guess I was more speaking to the person who sets one up with cheap-ass unsupported discount GigaNICs and thinks that it is going to speed up his LAN. When in reality a scavenged 100Mb server card can handle the load better and doesn't affect the speed of data between PCs on the LAN.

yeah but i was talking from lan to the interetnet. my server uploads and downloads lots and lots of data per day over internet. And my bottle neck right now is the 100mbits 5port switch witch i need to change. And then the internet connection witch i will update.

you really dont need to fast of an server. But you do need an good solid raid controller that does scsi or sata really good. usually about 400usd per controller.

i am pretty newb to this kind of thing as i found it very confusing when i tried to learn how to run my own server and full of problems.... i found it cheaper, faster, and simpler just to buy server space from someone else. if you could i would love to talk about how you developed this system and where you learned about setting it up and also the problems you had along the way.. send me a mesage if u are willing to share.
