hey guys if you search wallaby17171 feste you can check out me as i perform my final song. So far feste has been my favorite role so I just want some of you guys to check it out. and yes Roguishblonde there is without a doubt that feste knows that viola is a woman... hence the line "who you are and what you WOULD are..."
Shakespeare rarely added any kind of stage direction to his plays, and so this wasn't pre-directed in the script. Also, this is something that works much more in a movie setting, it's almost too subtle for the more broad scope of vision the stage presents.
I think it depends on the director. One particular uni prof I've taken Shakespeare with (most of prof's academic history is based on study of Shakespeare) has said that many productions include it - she said something to the effect of that the audience reaction can sometimes be amusing when the play is performed by the traditional all male cast. lol.
i think feste knows all along that viola's a woman. he's smarter than everyone else. maybe not in the text, but i think i remember evidence in the acting of this movie that suggests that. anyone know?
He certainly gives off a sense of omniscience. And yes, in the film, Feste observes from the cliffs as Viola and her group are washed ashore from the wreck and hide from the Illyrian soldiers.
@RoguishBlonde Actually, Feste is obviously more intelligent than any other character, save Viola, in the text. Shakespeare only had language and wordplay to show the level of thought in the characters, and Feste is the most witty of them all. It is suggested that Feste in the play knows that Viola is a woman. It is never said outright, but it may be true (he wishes her a beard at one point). It really depends on how you look at it, but i like to think so. It makes things more interesting!
@RoguishBlonde I have found that in many productions, Feste sees Viola come onshore and hears the conversation between she and the captain. Also, the point of Feste is that he is sort of omniscient, and knows what is ACTUALLY going on.
@RoguishBlonde i think (here specifically) he knows SOMETHING, the audience is never really clear on wether he KNOWS. but we are sure he does "know" if you understand me.... LOL
@RoguishBlonde in this production, just after the twins first appear simultaneously at the end, it is Feste who returns the necklace Viola took off at the beach after the shipwreck, so confirming that he knew all along. Not sure about other productions, though the banter about the beard certainly implies it
Hahaha...if we as the audience didn't know Cesario was really a woman, would it not have been a bit awkward for us to watch the two almost kiss? Haha...that's why Feste's expression is priceless!
Thanks, thanks a lot! This is my favorite part of the movie and the song is so beautiful. I can't help taking my breath away when they almost kiss. Damn Feste!

Toby Stephens is AMAZING. I also agree with the first comment. I think he knew Viola was a woman.

Ok - how much for me to msg / post exactly what he's doing on the guitar?
Aw come on guys, it's not that tricky, it's just a painstaking boring chore.
Listen to it over & over at the piano - work it out, or ask a music college friend to do it as their "special project" lols. They'll hate you :D

He has a much nicer voice than I expected. Ahh, Feste . . . I also think he knows the whole time. I love his facial expressions in this clip.

I really like this play. I am currently studying it in English. My personal favourite is MacBeth, but Twelfth Night comes a close second

Kingsley's brow furrow at the end of this song. Right before this clip is done. Genius, and the most perfect reaction to what is happening. *cough*

you're right, ben kingsley is amazing here, and this is DEFINITELY my favourite twelfth night.
that's true, actually! never thought of that before. Only problem is, toby stephens has started playing price john...

i was just thinking the same thing. He eyes her in a way that suggests he believes she's not really who everyone believes her to be.
