Its not like any shonen, it might seem so at first but thats due to it being more direct, less psychological and due to the changes in characters (especially shinji). These films are taking a different route, it would be redundant to redo the series with no changes in characters and stories.

It's more likely because Misato has seen evas true form or because of her cross that she gives to Shinji who during end of evangelion survives 3rd impact of which they made a fairly important scene.
