@pallypoo123 Awesome! Seeing how you said you're a mom, sorry for calling you man! Anyway, you won't be disappointed! It's a great show, lots of fun. Funny story, when I went, there was a drunk woman a row in front of us dancing like a mad woman the whole time! Quite funny :D Best wishes!

@pallypoo123 I saw them man, they are simply perfect and amazing. I had the cheapest seats, and got totally rocked by the power of their music. They are a RECREATION, of the original. Costumes, slides, voices, and even just the way they sit and stand! It's a truly amazing experience, especially for an unfortunate 14 year old who never got to see them in their primetime, such as myself.
@sceptile759 Hey ! I really love reading this from you :-). The Lamb came out in '74? ( when I was 14:-).Now I want to take my13 and 1/2 yr old to see the Musical Box do The Lamb. I got happy chills reading your comment.Friends back in America saw Musical Box and said it's as close to seeing the original that we'll probably ever get. I saw Genesis live in '76 at The Starlight Bowl in Burbank- Trick of the Tail, just after Peter Gabriel had left the band :-( post Gabriel Genesis= no Genesis
@pallypoo123 , interesting you say that. I am 21 and took a buddy of mine to see The Musical Box back in October. We both look young for our age though and we felt like celebrities there. Everyone wanted to talk to us to find out how we ended up listening to Genesis and going to see The Lamb. One guy even took our picture so that he could show his 14 year old son that young people can still like early Genesis music. I guess his son that it would be "unhip" to go. @sceptile759 AND . . . you have great musical taste :-)! Did your parents turn you on to Genesis? Such a great band . . . brings me back, but the music does not sound dated at all
@pallypoo123 My parents turned me on to everything I love, Pink Floyd, ELP, Gentle Giant, Mike OldField, Yes, King Crimson, The Strawbs, crap-tons of solo stuff, just the whole general Prog Rock nut band circle of the past 60 years. I've went out and taken the liberty of discovering the newer bands that are also really rocking! Of course, I also love me some normal 70's and 80's pop stuff like Thompson Twins and stuff, but now I have a whole library of prog reaching 2000 Hours!
@sceptile759 All I can say is that I, too, saw the Musical Box perform the Lamb recently!! I also had the cheapest seats in the theatre, and they put on one hell of a show!! They were absolutely amazing, (and I say that as a 38 year old, who, while never having the pleasure of seeing the original band with Gabrael, has seen some incredible shows in my lifetime!) Have fun at the show, @pallypoo123!!

I can only think of hearing "Grand Parade" once on the radio. ack in the day WYSP played all of Lamb at midnight during the week. They used to premier new albums at that time. I heard many new releases that way, "Frampton Comes Alive" and "Fleetwood Mac" being 2 other examples.
@forcelifeforce I would also like to say that I have been a positive contributor to dozens of You Tube entries over the years. I do feel that you have over-reacted; language such as 'repent' as used to another poster suggests you would do well to take a chill-pill every now and then.
@forcelifeforce At the end of the day this is a very emotive subject as the argument of old vs new is one that rages and will rage for all-time.
Perhaps I did jump on you unfairly. In that respect I apologise for distress caused.
However, while we're on the subject of prog roots, the band clearly didn't leave those behind completely as several longer songs on later albums will testify.
At first I thought they were out in right field, but after I got over the weird costumes I can see these guys were a very articulate band.Wonder how they would have sounded had Peter stayed
Peter Gabriel as the major poet and lyricist of early Genesis: That was lost when he left but does anyone else still think it's weird that Phil Collins' Genesis vocal tone is really similar to Gabriels voice, almost an imitation, the sound is almost a continuum, although as previous comments... the music had to change genres through the 70s and 80s and conform to shifting popular genres.
It is true that Genesis became more commercial and popular after Peter Gabriel left. However, Phil Collins also formed Brand X, which continued to produce wonderful music. They were often compared to American bands like Chick Corea's Return to Forever. In my opinion they were equally as good and accomplished.
Let's break it down. There was Genesis (1967-1980) and there was Phil Collins' backing band ~1980 on. In the 80's you couldn't tell the difference between a Collins solo song and a Genesis song. On the other hand, Peter Gabriel solo was purposely distinctive from the Genesis sound. Gabriel wins. On the other hand, look what happened to all the other art rock groups form the 70s that failed to adapt. Genesis had no choice but to change or else suffer the same fate as ELP, King Crimson, etc...
@TheCorrectAnswer56 ,I guess I have three hands:) Anyway, as great as 70s Genesis music was, it was never going to be mainstream stuff. And even if it was, it would cheapen its value for all of us. The band had no choice but to adapt. I still like Phil Collins a lot, but here's something to think about: nearly all of Peter Gabriel's fans know about his past with Genesis. I would venture to say most of Phil Collins fans have no idea how good of a drummer he was or anything about 70s Genesis.

Believe it or not Genesis fans, but a Chicago FM radio station actually played the first side of the Lamb album straight through. That is the first six songs, up to and including Grand Parade. Why, you might ask, would a popular radio station ever do this? Two reasons: it was 3am on a Monday and it was part of a segment called Overnight Album Side dedicated to playing a full side of rock's most significant albums. Someone tell me how many times they've ever heard Grand Parade on FM radio though?
@TheCorrectAnswer56 My region has fantastic radio selection, several will frequently play albums, live recordings, and even the occasional concert. Also I saw Genesis live. (rubbing it in here, but I literally missed the opportunity to get free front tickets, but I was fine in nose bleed section)
@TheCorrectAnswer56 Very cool and a great idea by that radio station. The FM Classic Rock station here in Vancouver seldom plays any classic Genesis. There is a daily, all-request noon time hour segment and I e-mailed in and they played the title track to the Lamb and that made things better for me. Hearing the first half of the Lamb album on FM air play would be the ultimate, though.
@bcbest , other than that special occasion, the only Gabriel Genesis songs I have ever heard on the radio were "I Know What I Like" and "Carpet Crawlers". And I can count on one hand how many times. Although once I remember they played the entire '74 Rainbow Theater gig, I think to celebrate Gabriel's 50th birthday or something. Strangely enough, they are actually featuring Genesis again this Monday, Feb 13th (Gabriel's birthday) for overnight album side. I wonder what it will be this time!?!
@TheCorrectAnswer56 Same thing here. I have only heard "I Know What I Like" and "Carpet Crawlers" only once each here over the years and no prior Genesis work earlier than that. Perhaps because the majority of Genesis' work are 'long-play' songs. I have had e-mail conversations with station program directors here and they all say that they love Gabriel's music, but end up only generally just playing his solo work and stick with Genesis music from 78' onward and that is a shame.
@TheCorrectAnswer56 Hopefully they will play on that overnight Feb.13th show some Genesis from 'Selling England by the Pound' when Genesis was at their zenith in prog-rock glory.
@bcbest , BINGO!!! It was a birthday salute to Peter Gabriel and they played side 2 of Selling England. So Battle of Epping Forest, After The Ordeal, Cinema Show, and Aisle of Plenty were played. Pretty awesome! And good call by you.
@TheCorrectAnswer56 Very cool! That radio station does things right. What a special treat to hear that album and those songs on FM radio. The FM classic rock station here will play a song or two of an artist whose birthday falls on a particular day, but nothing like that. Nice that you could enjoy and here's hoping that maybe the slim chance the classic line-up of Genesis may one day re-form for a reunion tour.
@TheCorrectAnswer56 here in L.A. we have a FM radio station that plays album rock and does album sides during one weekday and on some weekends (the sound 103.1) heard side one of "a trick of the tail" one time, got me liking the earlier stuff more now,
@socalltd , ironically, "A Trick Of The Tail" and "Wind & Wuthering" - the first to feature Phil Collins as lead vocalist - were actually less commercially accessible to the radio than their earlier albums with Gabriel. Obviously they changed that in a hurry. Both are fantastic albums though. Cool that you heard Trick of the Tail - I have yet to hear anything played from that album on a radio near me. Anything from the albums "Trespass" to Wind & Wuthering" is gold in my opinion.
I'd like to hear an edit of this with nothing but the drums...I keep listening to it over and over and wondering where in hell he came up with those riffs. The first time I heard the song it was like the drums were an afterthought to me...then equal to everything else....and now sometimes it's nearly all I pay attention to. Incredible drums....
What happened indeed... I missed this, living in Miami when they played Palm Beach and I did not have a ride. Wow. Some of my friends made it. My other friends and I did not even know that the backing vocals on the record are Phil Collins... we thought it was Gabriel overdubbed. They sound so close...

@dogfoodean- I'll tell you what happened...Population explosion+runaway corporatism/government collusion+technological "breakthroughs" which basically consigned us all to living our lives behind computer screens, unable to relate to our fellow man in a common struggle...
I am beyond pissed that I'm 43 and just now discovering older Genesis, damned excellent songs and even better drums...damn he's good. Figures...didn't really discover the Beatles until five years ago...
We went and saw this show twice in Chicago. It blew us away then, and it still does today. What a great era for music, movies, columbian and many other imported natural buds, so cheap, not a big deal with the law, no need for condoms, everyone who wanted to work was working, no DUI mania, we went to the moon on rotary phone technology, OK, 'Nam was bad, but all in all a great time to be young and alive in America...what happened?
@forcelifeforce Please, PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR ALSO LIKING GENESIS WITH COLLINS, FORGIVE ME THAT I'M NOT A TRUE GENESIS FAN, FORVIGE ME FOR NOT THROWING SHIT AT PHIL COLLINS LIKE YOU DO.
@forcelifeforce Hahahahaha, you actually took me for serious????? LOL mate!!!!
But you know, let's make a truce afterall: You listen what you like and respect the others that listen what they like OK? Just praise the Gabriel-era how long do you want, but don't say shitty things about the Collins-era; but whatever, Collins wouldn't give a damn about that.
I just like both eras of the band, in fact I like Collins a bit more. I think he's a better singer than Gabriel.
@forcelifeforce Nevertheless, Gabriel was a fucking great musician (and he still is), but no one asked him to leave the band. And yeah, Genesis became a pop-rock group after Gabriel left, but they never trully abandoned their prog-rock roots. Just read TheRaivan354's comment.
@forcelifeforce I think the band has had several chapters in it's illustrious career, but to pit one era against the other is totally redundant as all it boils down to is a matter of personal opinion and of personal taste.
What I like about any music is that is true to the people who wrote it, so in that case, for me, a song like Jesus He Knows Me is just as much a Genesis song as is Looking For Someone.
In that sense, if you get both, you understand the intrinsic language of the band.
A *True* and Loyal Genesis supporter Supports whatever this incredible orchestra creates and endeavours in their incredible universe of music. Anyone feeling any different is both bogus and incredibly pretentious. Check it out.
Genesis ALWAYS tried to mix pop-songwriting with "progressive" extended songs, they were just more commercially successful at it during the Collins years than with Peter Gabriel. (not to mention that Gabriel's hits during his solo career were pop songs too, i.e. Solsbury Hill, Sledgehammer, Big Time). For Gabriel era Genesis pop, remember "I Know What I Like" "Counting Out Time." Progressive Collins' songs: "Unquiet Slumbers" "Duke's Travels" "Domino" "Driving the Last Spike" "Fading Lights" etc
My 1st Genesis concerts started in '76....missed out on Genesis with Gabriel but saw his 1st solo tour in early '77 at the Montreal Forum with 17,000 other Genesis Freaks..that's when he used the new wireless microphone technology and popped out up in the seats in the back of the seating oval and clambered down to the floor walked right pass me singing with mirrored contact lenses on and I gave him a pat on his shoulder...then put on a platform..was pretty freaky when you're blasted on acid..
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is easily one of the 5 best rock albums of all time... and there are millions of albums which can be labeled under the "rock" genre.
If it was just of me, it would be the best Rock album ever made, no question.
YOU ARE LUCKY for this ! - unfortunatly never saw Genesis in concert :'( [only Peter Gabriel at the beginning of his solo career... don't like Genesis since Peter Gabriel is gone !] - but this album upon my mind is one of the best of all the times !! GIANT and sacred - inspired by the grace ...
To the folks who are saying that 80's Genesis is better: Can you give your CDs a little more listen before you speak up. Maybe you won't get it at first, but I assure you you won't feel that way years down the road. Genesis was great up through Steve's departure. Steve's solo LPs from the 70's are great (I actually don't know the later ones) and Peter has some great solo albums, too, but Genesis lost their edge when they (admittedly) became a pop group.
Genesis was awesome in the 80's and this era IS better than the Peter Gabriel Era. I have all the albums and I love the early era but I still prefer the songs they made from Duke to WCD. The best era is probably post-Gabriel and pre-Hackett's departure anyway.
I remember as a kid being a fan of genesis in the 80s and buying the 70s stuff on 2nd hand lps and being amazed at how different they were in the early days but still brilliant.
@MurphyMonster - manny here are very young and never knew the "Peter Gabriel" Genesis. My favorite Genesis album, followed by Selling England, but then, I'm old :-)
@DejectedPanda Phil was a business man when "his" era of Genesis came around. Hackett and Gabriel were gone, and when it was just him, Banks, and Rutherford, he took them from artistic/progressive rock to crossover/arena rock. In the end, a lot of their songs ended up sounding similar to each other, just like modern pop artists, and they lost that special touch that set them apart from the rest.
But hey, at least you gave this a listen. That's more than most Genesis "fans" would do.
Check out Phish's rendition of Watcher of the Skies and Trey Anastasio's subsequent induction of Genesis at the Hall of Fame last year.Very good stuff and his speech about the band almost brought me to tears.
@jbills2007 you know that's Peter Gabriel singing...I don't think that Collins even sang backup on this album, certainly didn't on the concert tour, but sounded good on drums!
Wow... Way off................. Phil Collins voice is quite evident on this recording on the chorus especially, the highest voice you hear.... Secondly... He sang a TON in concert with Peter Gabriel backing vocals. I've heard at least half that tour in recordings and Phil's voice is very evident. Mike & Tony would join in on choruses, but Phil would do harmony work on things like Cage, Lifeless Packaging, Cuckoo Cocoon, Light Dies Down, so on, so forth....
I missed seeing Genesis with Gabriel but I saw their first tour without him and I also saw gabriels first tour at De Montfort. Wish I could have seen the Gabriel era show with costumes and lighting etc.
@MsMisterry wow..i saw yesterday a tribute band playing the whole show...unbelievable...i have seen many bands but i really wish i was born earlier....so many great bands played then!!
@lovecraft36 I wouldn't say better, Equal in differing ways. Yes, ELP, Manfred Man, Zeppelin, Moody Blues, Procol Herum, It was a great time, of great bands and great compositions. I go back further than these bands, I have been to every Floyd show since Astronomy Domine, same for Yes. The music today lacks the depth, clarity and scope of the music of the 60's and 70's. My first Genesis show was in '69 while on leave in London. I wish I could remember the name of the club they were playing.
@MsMisterry Hi! I`ve also seen this tour in germany, and it was one ofe my best concerts ever. This album is for me one of the best in the world. Best regards Klaus
Geneis is the most underrated band ever: Peter Gabriel, Phil Collin, Steve Hackett, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford. Never has so much talent has ever united for one of the greatest albums ever.
@ImaFiranInMahLazor I couldn't disagree more. Phil Collins turned Genesis into a pop band. That is like comparing Pink Floyd with Hall and Oats...lol.
@bozboz777 I agree mate, I love every album Genesis ever made with or without Gabriel, although I have to admit my favourite Genesis album was and still is Foxtrot. All the best friend.
@65mikechristie Me and my brother saw that concert as well if I remember correctly a coffin was carried on stage and gabriel got out of it rained most of the day the bowl turned into a giant mudslide.
Yeah this record is to Genesis what Sgt Peppers is to Beatles...Gabriel had started making the movie and ran out of funding...came back to it later when he was wealthy and still didnt accomplish making the movie ...too bad...
Great album..."and Im hovering like a fly...w
Genesis without Gabriel is like the Beatles continuing without Lennon...it's very incomplete and different although Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering are nice records...but they lost their charisma
How on earth can anyone give this beauty a thumbs down? those 7 who have, (thus far), clearly do not understand music.

Someonewholovesmusi1 1 month ago
@TheCorrectAnswer56 Very cool and a great idea by that radio station. The FM Classic Rock station here in Vancouver seldom plays any classic Genesis. There is a daily, all-request noon time hour segment and I e-mailed in and they played the title track to the Lamb and that made things better for me. Hearing the first half of the Lamb album on FM air play would be the ultimate, though.
bcbest 2 weeks ago
@bcbest , other than that special occasion, the only Gabriel Genesis songs I have ever heard on the radio were "I Know What I Like" and "Carpet Crawlers". And I can count on one hand how many times. Although once I remember they played the entire '74 Rainbow Theater gig, I think to celebrate Gabriel's 50th birthday or something. Strangely enough, they are actually featuring Genesis again this Monday, Feb 13th (Gabriel's birthday) for overnight album side. I wonder what it will be this time!?!
TheCorrectAnswer56 2 weeks ago
@TheCorrectAnswer56 Same thing here. I have only heard "I Know What I Like" and "Carpet Crawlers" only once each here over the years and no prior Genesis work earlier than that. Perhaps because the majority of Genesis' work are 'long-play' songs. I have had e-mail conversations with station program directors here and they all say that they love Gabriel's music, but end up only generally just playing his solo work and stick with Genesis music from 78' onward and that is a shame.
bcbest 2 weeks ago
@TheCorrectAnswer56 Hopefully they will play on that overnight Feb.13th show some Genesis from 'Selling England by the Pound' when Genesis was at their zenith in prog-rock glory.
bcbest 2 weeks ago
@bcbest , BINGO!!! It was a birthday salute to Peter Gabriel and they played side 2 of Selling England. So Battle of Epping Forest, After The Ordeal, Cinema Show, and Aisle of Plenty were played. Pretty awesome! And good call by you.
TheCorrectAnswer56 1 week ago
@TheCorrectAnswer56 Very cool! That radio station does things right. What a special treat to hear that album and those songs on FM radio. The FM classic rock station here will play a song or two of an artist whose birthday falls on a particular day, but nothing like that. Nice that you could enjoy and here's hoping that maybe the slim chance the classic line-up of Genesis may one day re-form for a reunion tour.

@TheCorrectAnswer56 here in L.A. we have a FM radio station that plays album rock and does album sides during one weekday and on some weekends (the sound 103.1) heard side one of "a trick of the tail" one time, got me liking the earlier stuff more now,
socalltd 1 week ago

Here is a correction that is honest and logical:
Amazing song by the classic Genesis. But I'm VERY sad to see so
close-minded people as user PurpleInTheDeep claiming that people
aren't justified in stating how these two different eras are noticeably unequal.... .
***AND** a true Genesis fan does **NOT** like all of their stuff,
especially as the true fans are very discerning. These fans know
that the band left their prog roots. The band left them. NOT the other
way around!
forcelifeforce 5 months ago
@forcelifeforce Please, PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR ALSO LIKING GENESIS WITH COLLINS, FORGIVE ME THAT I'M NOT A TRUE GENESIS FAN, FORVIGE ME FOR NOT THROWING SHIT AT PHIL COLLINS LIKE YOU DO.
JUST PLEASE FORGIVE ME, YOU MORON!
PurpleInTheDeep 5 months ago
1) Turn off your caps. They're tantrum-based.
2) You're not "forgiven" for anything. For forgiveness, you have to repent:
A) acknowledge your uncivility, B) stop said activity, C) and *endeavor* to
not repeat it.
And you *aren't* a true Genesis fan. When they went pop. the
group did the bait-and switch, A rational fan rejects that BS.
And you're not "forgiven" for your emotionalism-based posts. You proved my point
about not arguing rationally with your reply's tone/words.
forcelifeforce 5 months ago
@forcelifeforce Hahahahaha, you actually took me for serious????? LOL mate!!!!
But you know, let's make a truce afterall: You listen what you like and respect the others that listen what they like OK? Just praise the Gabriel-era how long do you want, but don't say shitty things about the Collins-era; but whatever, Collins wouldn't give a damn about that.
I just like both eras of the band, in fact I like Collins a bit more. I think he's a better singer than Gabriel.
PurpleInTheDeep 5 months ago
@forcelifeforce Nevertheless, Gabriel was a fucking great musician (and he still is), but no one asked him to leave the band. And yeah, Genesis became a pop-rock group after Gabriel left, but they never trully abandoned their prog-rock roots. Just read TheRaivan354's comment.
Cheers

@forcelifeforce All the way up to Abacab was good. After Abacab, NO WAY
davypeep 5 months ago
@forcelifeforce I think the band has had several chapters in it's illustrious career, but to pit one era against the other is totally redundant as all it boils down to is a matter of personal opinion and of personal taste.
What I like about any music is that is true to the people who wrote it, so in that case, for me, a song like Jesus He Knows Me is just as much a Genesis song as is Looking For Someone.
In that sense, if you get both, you understand the intrinsic language of the band.
millsy2010 1 month ago
@millsy2010 I will "pit" any era of any band against itself anytime.
forcelifeforce 1 month ago
@forcelifeforce Nothing is redundant about "pitting" any era of any group
against itself. It is appropriate to compare the merits of a group to
itself.
Just as it is, for example, appropriate to pit the original "boy
band" style of The Beatles to their later complex songs.
forcelifeforce 1 month ago
@forcelifeforce well you do that, but you cannot present opinion as fact, err, fact!

Genesis always had great music, even with Ray Wilson.

I tottaly agree, Genesis was Peter no matter what you say.
And if you dont agree just listen to all he did solo, wipes out Phil.
NORTHWESTBIKERMART 6 months ago

AldorleaGames 6 months ago
I remember as a kid being a fan of genesis in the 80s and buying the 70s stuff on 2nd hand lps and being amazed at how different they were in the early days but still brilliant.

MurphyMonster 7 months ago
@MurphyMonster - manny here are very young and never knew the "Peter Gabriel" Genesis. My favorite Genesis album, followed by Selling England, but then, I'm old :-)
spacejaime 6 months ago
@DejectedPanda Phil was a business man when "his" era of Genesis came around. Hackett and Gabriel were gone, and when it was just him, Banks, and Rutherford, he took them from artistic/progressive rock to crossover/arena rock. In the end, a lot of their songs ended up sounding similar to each other, just like modern pop artists, and they lost that special touch that set them apart from the rest.
But hey, at least you gave this a listen. That's more than most Genesis "fans" would do.

@burdinus
