  • great baritone / great charmer

  • i know him, i was with his son yesterday.

  • @emmacerii You lucky thing you! ;) Is he really as nice and sweet as he seems to be?

  • This is positively beautiful. Bryn Terfel is one opera singer who knows how to sing crossover material.

  • Sion goronwy of bala is 10 times better

  • love it

  • Bryn I LOVE YOU!!!

  • beautiful!

  • cvbcvb

  • Why is this so short? he doesn't finish.

  • That is how it came. Contrary to what absurd lunatics may say, I have no idea now where I got the video. I don't claim or mean to imply by posting them that any of these videos are "my own work". Of course they are not my work. I post them because people enjoy them and keep asking me to post them here on YouTube where they are readily accessible.

  • Holy Cow! Bryn, with Martin Taylor on strings. Two of the modern greats!

  • ALL THAT DOESN'T MATTER! The point is that this song is touhing the hearts of others around the world. Beautiful voices such as Bryn brings people to tears. The song has done its job. Forget about the negative history that ceoms along with it. It is no pointarguing about it. We are in new times and new more interesting, positive history is being made everyday. The fact that Newton work was a part of the slave movement is completely irrelevant to this gorgeous song. Be considerate.

  • Was I that inconsiderate? I think you are drawing inferences from my comments that I don't mean. I am not trying to rubbish the song. God, if he exists, could use the most degenerate of sinners to do something beautiful and inspiring. If actions speak louder than words my having posted 2 or 3 versions of the song might give you an idea of what I think about it. ;-)

  • @godsingjulius It does matter from an historical context. Newton wrote this hymn to accompany one of his sermons which spoke about how God's Grace redeems souls. A text without a context is a pretext.

  • As I type this comment tears fall from my eyes! The most beatiful rendition I have ever heard and its coming from a Baritone. Amazing!

  • his so good...

  • Amen~~~~it's awesome.

  • You may not have anger, but you patronized me. That's quite unpleasant when I just tried to help finding the answer to a simple question that was asked here. I wonder if you just read my point. Now if you make other videos, just let us know if commenting is allowed.

  • You interpreted the post as patronising. It was terse because of the limitations imposed by Youtube. I threw in the "unfortunately" deliberately to attempt to make the tone more conversational. Looking at the last sentence it could seem patronising, but I put in the "that I know of" because I'm genuinely not sure -- not to be rhetorically sarcastic. I was trying to be informative about Newton. Inspiring as the story about him is, it is almost certainly at least an exaggeration.

  • As far as your point is concerned, I have no problem or argument with what you said about the songs. I just added a bit about Ave Maria, which is in no way in disagreement with you, but just to make it clear - in case there were some who didn't know - why it is 100% Catholic. My last couple of sentences were just to explain how I had been defining the songs. This wasn't meant as disagreement with you; but demonstrates that we are saying the same thing in slightly different ways.

  • wonderful!

  • I am sorry, for some reasons I thought I posted this on Hayley Westenra's video of Ave Maria, I do not know why my previous post showed up here even though I have watched this video. But thank you for the information, now I have learned a bit more about the religions in general. Thank you.

  • If someone could correct me if I am wrong but I thought Ave Maria is a Catholic hymn and Amazing Grace is a Christian hyman. But please correct me if I am wrong, I don't mind learning from different religions.

  • Catholics are Christians. Ave Marie is specific to the Catholic denomination because they put more emphasis on the Virgin Mary than the Protestant denominations. Protestants don't believe in purgatory or of intecession by the Virgin Mary, so Ave Maria is not appropriate to Protestantism. It is not a hymn so much as a prayer. Amazing grace is appropriate to all Christians, which includes Catholics.

  • PS I am certainly no expert in the concept of intercession, and if I have made a gross error in my above post feel free to correct me. Preferably in a kindly fashion ;-)

  • Amazing Grace was originally a purely Protestant song written by an English Captain of a slave driver after he was facing death in a storm. He became a strong abolitionnist. Still today, many prots are claiming this heritage, even if it actually became a recognition song for all Christians, not like Ave Marias which are 100% Catholic or A Mighty Fortress which is 100% protestant. Another song turns out to be a recognition song for Christians. it's "O sacred head now wounded", originally prots.

  • Newton never became an abolutionist. And the storm didn't change his views. Much later he became a minister and penned this song. The story you give is widely circulated but is unfortunately not true. Ave Maria is Catholic because the veneration of Mary involved is somewhat contrary to Protestant doctrine. I am counting a song as both no matter who wrote it, provided it doesn't conflict with either's doctrines. Amazing grace conflicts in no way with Catholic doctrine that I know of.

  • Why do you take it with such an anger? the legend says Newton became an abolitionnist (read slavery books). Anyway, I see you don't really want to share point of views on here. I'm out. Good luck.

  • Oh, Snopes says he started to express doubts about slavery some 32 years after his conversion... but that he did carry on in the slave trade after becoming a Christian...

It seems there are many conflicting stories.

  • one of the all time best performances of this song

  • Anybody know if he has any other Christian songs out there?

  • Ave Maria, if you count that... There are a number of "Christian" songs that are sung by many people. Check Bryn's duets with Renee Fleming, there may be somethings like "O Holy Night", etc.

  • He was in Messiah, The Dreamcast. He sang, "Why Do The Nations." Teddy Rhodes sang that whole thing and he's awesome.

  • On his simple gifts CD he has several: God's Mercy, Morning Has Broken, Nearer My God to Thee, Ave Maria, Ave Verum Corpus, The Lord Bless You and Keep You, How Great Thou Art, God Will be With You. and on his Favorites CD: The Lord is My Shepherd, Danny Boy (maybe), Goin' Home, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, Deep River, Bless this House, I'll Walk Beside You, and If I Can Help Somebody. There. and there's more but my fingers are tired.

  • Good one, thanks!

  • Interesting list. It illustrates just how many songs in English have some Christian message.

  • Is Bryn a christian? Anyone know?

  • Absolutely beautiful

  • youtiube, what kind of and idiot are you to write crap like that? First of all the song has very deep meaning and you should read it's history, and second, Bryn doesn't sing crap.
