i dont know whether to try this or a diy polystyrene background.. which will look better? also, what conditions does java moss need? any special water parameters or can i just dump in in my tropical tank (23 degrees c) and let it grow? please reply
it depends on your final layout, what you want to achieve :D...for me, I would prefer moss wall :D
Which part of the world are you in? usually around 25C is best for most aquatic plants, at 23C, you can use a heater, to achieve 25C or higher, which is much cheaper compare to us here, we have to use a chiller :(.....
@borneosucker im in england, so it feels like winter all year round, with air temp getting to below 10C, my tank is set at 23C and im looking to rehome a load of my danio cuz im fed up with them (no colour) and will buy some moss to attempt a wall :D thanks for the help
Ahh that explain your low water temperature. Here in Malaysia, we have higher water temperature, and sometimes extreme hobbyist put their tanks in air conditioned room, use multiple chiller...Expensive way just to bring down water temperature :(.....in your case, it is so so much easy to achieve higher temperature with a cheap heater :D.....anyway, good decision to go with a moss wall...do make sure your tanks have lights for the moss to grow ~Cheers!
how do you get those moss attach to the driftwood?mine keep coming out...btw i like your moss wall...hoping to make one soon, but i will need a lot of those moss...:D
Thanks for your comment :D For the moss to grow on driftwood, you just need to tie it on the wood. I have a video on that, you can check it out. Title is "Growing Moss on Bogwood"
i dunno .. Where does the java moss gets it-s food? if you make a carpet he will use the substrat or i dont know.. but in the back of your aquarium what does he eat?
@borneosucker Could you please send me a link to those images as well? I'm really interested in building something like this wall. It looks really great!
Its great watching the progress this stuff is making. I'll have to check that blog of yours to see how well it did since its been quite some time now!
to my experience, moss grow well in low temperature. depending on species, I think the singapore moss (vesicularia dubayana) grow at quite a good rate compare to the other moss I have. Give them enough lighting too, and they will grow much faster :)
borneosucker were you replying to me about forums?
bludrgn2000 indeed I have been to Big Al's just this week! Thanks a lot for the suggestion. Sadly, they were out of java moss because they say it's "off season" so I should order online or find hobbyists around :) I didn't know Big Al's were franchised. We have 2 locations in Ottawa which is pretty nice. Anyway they gave me a little bit of moss for the moment but not enough to make a wall hehe!
I think one of the way to start finding hobbyist around you is participate in online forum. Your profile says that you are from US, I guess there's quite a number of forums from the US. just do a google search, and participate. if there's a buy and sell section, post your enquiry there, that way, other member of the forum will respond accordingly :D
Some of my java moss I get from hobbyist, some I collected my own in the wild :D
I am trying now with plastic mesh onion bags! The holes seem to be the right size. I've shopped everywhere and couldn't find the right material to make it so when I went to the grocery store and saw the onions, I thought it would be perfect! :)
I think that should be fine :D. As long as the moss can attach nicely on the mesh, and the mesh can fit well into your tank, then that shouldn't be a problem :)
We will see :) I will try to take pictures once it's done. Now I have to go find Java moss! The petshops around here don't have it so I think I'll have to order it online. Is it a bad idea to buy online? I was thinking of the shipping time and temperature (I live in Ottawa, Canada and it's below 0)...
No I don't think it is bad idea to buy online, you have to make arrangement with the seller to pack it nicely, I reputable should be able to do that :D
By the way, you can also try local hobbyist in your area.
Good videos mate, I tried this about 23 months ago but I think the holes in my plastic mesh were too small....were did you get your mesh? I have tried online but can't seem to find any good stockists?
there is sum very good quality java moss on ebay which has been grown totally submerged in the uk so it wont take as long to ship and it wont go brown. check it out its a very good portion
java moss are much easy to care for. as long as there's is light they will grow. but another important factor is temperature, they strive better in cooler temperature. I just recently know bout it, so I'm watching at their growth now, therefore update will come later :)
i do believe that it would of worked much better if you had assed more moss in the beginning, and used larger netting. is Java Moss usually such a slow grower?
yeah....I should have done as you say, but at that time, I was keeping small fishes, which I think they could get trap if I used larger netting. I would say they are moderate grower...now I'm cooling the temperature, just to see, if it can accelerate the growth...lol

Hello :D
mine is a mosquito net...and it is available in hardware store :)
Hey, instead of sandwish the moss between to plastic mesh, you can use only one, and tie the moss over it :) sort of like stitching the moss :D

Ahhh I like idea of using only one and using fishing line to stitch it, will give that a bash

Hi, where are you from? There's one online store, but they ship within Malaysia, and not internationally :(
you can try mizuworld[dot]com, they are from Singapore, and they do international shipping :)
On the other hand, you can try local hobbyist near you, that would be a much better choice for me :D

hey good job on the wall it's a great idea...just one question...are you using Co2 for this tank? Update would be greatly appreciated as well :) thx
aznfire888 2 years ago
I use a DIY one, but inconsistent injection, sometimes I'm too busy, I forget to refill....haha, even without CO2, my moss do grow :)
borneosucker 2 years ago
Hey man,
Moss does grow very fast if you have the light longer on than `2hours( i have it in my breed tank)
Co2 is not needed , i think it grows very slow in my diy co2 tank ()240 liters )
Peace and love
