I was at the show and this was a great treat for the British fans. There's no comparison with Manfred Man, Paul Jones is a pure pop singer, this is a completely different interpretation - just as they did with "Blinded" of course...
I went to college in 77 with a guy from NJ who had a bootleg tape of this song it was from 1975 amazing! I think it is personal, he doesn't want to record of this!
Quit with the negative wabes is from a movie "Kelly's Heroes" which starred Clint Eastwood and a bunch of other stars. Donald Sutherland was a Wine drinkin', cheese eatin' tank commander and his partner was Cap't Stuebing who was always negative. Sutherland's key line in the movie was "quit with the nagative wabes." Whenever someone takes a situation way too serious, I break out that great line "quit with the negative wabes." Bruce has a long history of Pretty Flamingo. We should just enjoy..
@moocow117 Oddball was an anachronistic hippy character wholly out of place in a film set during the Second World War. He was saying "waves", not "wabes". This was also circa the same time that Sutherland made "FTA" with Jane Fonda, an embarrassment that all concerned with would love to see buried.
Now, Now, showme. I love Bruce, he puts on a hell of a concert (saw him in New Orleans 1980). Nobody does it as good as Manfred Mann. Although Elvis Costello, and Squeeze do a good version. Bruce does that song because of how he felt about it, so he must like the original version.
bruce has been singing that song for over 30 years n if u ask me it cuts to the heart better than manfred man so u gan stick ur british invasion up ur ass
Unreal he played 17 songs from the 70's and early 80's 31 overall hes amazing see u next year bruce and congats to the NFL for landing you in the superbowl mayb the smartest thing goodell has ever done

I was at this show. It was Patti's birthday and a tribute to her. It made me cry then and still does. Love you Bruce and Clarence. RIP baby.

It's great that Springsteen paid tribute to a great song but favor Manfred Mann's version way more.

Awful, just awful. How could he truly love a song and then ruin it like this? Bruce, shut the fuck up.
